EDIT: After I upload it to Shapeways, it's as easy to order as this:
http://www.shapeways.com/model/1270....._project_.html
Found this waiting for me when I got home from AC last night. It's so cool, I wish it had made it for AC.
Toony style credit goes to Nanook123 when she made my badge: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3945470/
This is a 3D print, and surprisingly, was only $31 shipped from the Netherlands. Don't know how it's so much more reasonable that the last model, and this seems bigger.
It's meant to be a badge, with a two clips wrapped around each side on the top. The frame also protects the figure, as everything intersects with it. If it breaks, only $31 to replace at any time.
Heres the 3D model:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3978050
For some reason this color print seems shiny, while the Chibi Bat I gave to Faye was more matte. I wonder if the liquid hardening process was different this time.
Chibi Faye print: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3894220/
This was made in ZBrush and Hexagon and uploaded and printed at www.shapeways.com
I can't way to do more of this stuff. It's so fun to see it come to life from the computer. Is there a 3D print category

im gonna have to make one of candy corn sometime. what program do you use to make the model ref?
ZBrush, but I want to make other people's characters too, not just my own. Zbrush was the main modeling program, around $599 and takes a while to learn the interface. I used Nanook's badge style of Orion to breeze through this, maybe you should get one of Candy Corn by her, then I could try to take a stab at it. Unlike this Orion model, I'd want to make figurines, then adjust them to badges.
I bet one day Staples will have 3D printers, but you'll be long gone from there

eh...yea. that's alot of moolah. yea i wouldn't want a badge. cause with candy corn i do plan to be crazy in her. to have her nomming candy corn would be neat. as for those printers...might be a LONG time before staples sees em lol
Yeah, these badges might not be the best thing for suiters Plus the texture seems to grip clothes, who knows about fur, a blank laminate sheet behind it might be required. Still, a cool figurine would be fun one day.
Hope the Candy Corn suit is coming along, can't wait to see it.

Download sculptris :o it's a lot more simple but it's free! And it's by the makers of zbrush!
OMG I totally didn't dee this is from 4 years ago I FEEL DUMB NOW
im so sorry LOL
im so sorry LOL
my college I went to has a 3D printer I bet if they was payed for the amount of plastic that was used up they let it be used for things like this
just as long it was tasteful hehe can't see them letting it be used to make 3D porn

mmm very cool. what is the material? kinda reminds me of colored sandstone from shapeways :p been tinkering around with zbrush, any suggestions or hints?
Yep, I mentioned shapeways, where I printed it in full color sandstone. I'd love to give suggestions, but that will have to be later. heres kind of a view of a very early stage one night:
http://other.toonguru.com/Orion_3D_toon.jpg
The head was a sphere in zbrush, even more lower polygon than shown there. I just simply moved the points around with the brush tool, with auto mirroring. Only dividing it once I can't add more detail. The ears are separate, started from a sphere again. The body, zSphers, where you make a stick figure with connected spheres, then it generates a bse mesh as seen in the photo.
I was being so quick and dirty to try for AC, I posed the body before the feet and hands were attached. The hands were from zSpheres I made another time, exported and cleaned up in Hexagon to match up to the handless body to weld, while fee were all made in Hexagon. I 3D painted it in Zbrush after it was finished. Normally, you want to finish a figure in a jesus pose, then rig and pose.

>.< good thingn i read up and tried to practice and saw all the video tutorial on zbrush's website, or else i wouldnt have one clue you said :p but i guess i just need practice knowing the buttons(shortcuts and whatnot) and going from one mode to another and manipulating zpheres like that :3 but thanks for the early stages it really helped me in knowing where to start :p
Curious, do you have any photos of what the geometry looked like when you were all done and it was accepted for printing?
Off hand you can see one of the attempts in wireframe in the background here:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3978050
This one you see in the background would fail being uploaded due to non-manifold errors. The geometry is fine, it's just that vrml files start in meters, so to get to centimeters, it sometimes doesn't have enough accuracy to keep really close points from sharing the same space.
Notice in the wireframe, the dense tiny cluster in the center of the eyes, that was giving me issues. No matter what I set the decimation master to in ZBrush, it would never reduce those spots. So in Hexagon I merged them to be as simple as the surrounding triangles, then I had to fix the UVs manually until it looked okay.
Here's more than you probably asked for
When prepping, I had all the parts as subtools (like objects), the body, the head, ears, tail, etc. Color was polypaint, where each polygon has a color, so each part was in millions of polygons. Using a quick and dirty auto UV Master in Zbrush, I created UVs for each tool and exported the lower polygon versions. Reason for exporting, I imported each into Hexagon and arranged all the Uvs to fit in one UV space, so nothing overlapped and one texture could be used. Export each part separate and import them back to ZBrush for the new UVs. Then I used polypaint to texture to make each part. Though, I had to export each texture and merge them all into one single texture for the final exported model.
From there, I used zbrush decimation master on each subtool, compared to merging the tools and doing it all at once. This gave me maximum control for each part, pushing it to the limit, as low as 4-5% of the original polygon count before the the UVs started be effected. You need to make sure it's 400,000 triangles or so for their machines, I'd have to double check the exact amount. Still, for vrml, due to the small size, I lower it as much as I can go to avoid errors.
When using the Zbrush print exporter, for VRML, you need to set the scale to 0.076 to get 7.6cm.

Oh woah I didn't even notice the background in that pic was the wireframe, but this is very helpful as my next question was going to be about poly count and detail limits. And yeah I can see what you're saying about the issues with it not being manifold.
This is all very fascinating, I've only just recently started poking and prodding in zbrush, but I have some experience with maya so I'd love to take a stab at this myself, although I may wait until I have a better understanding of UV mapping. But thank you for all the info!

The UV mapping was pretty automatic thanks to Zbrush's new plug-in that does it more in a traditional way, compared to it's old method of a mosaic of square polygons. You can add more control, like painting where you want it to be less distorted, and where you want the seams. Seams, like painting where you want it cut and pulled apart, like taking a fursuit apart to lay the fur flat on the ground. I didn't use those features, so a seam might of been across the middle of the face, but didn't matter here.
Want to see the coolest 3D printed figure services?
Check out the work in progress thread at zbrush (I chose a page with cool examples, one model has nudity, but artistic and bronze colored):
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showth.....ghlight=ownage
This guys operation prints in high quality plasitc, then his studio paints each one by hand. Fixes parts by manually that can't be printed. He has a special Zbrush model deal too, a flat $299 price for a figure 7.87 inches tall, no matter the shape or extra parts like armor pieces that come off. That includes color painted. Even if the model has no texture or color, they can do it with just examples of how you want it to look. $299 is a lot, but when you want a masterpiece, with extreme detail and smooth surface, and the best color possible, it's a bargain.
Also, you don't have to prep the model, as in make it compatible with the printer, hollow, etc, they do that too.

AH! Well that's very comforting to hear then! I won't lie the process of UV mapping was looking a bit intimidating from the standpoint of having never even unwrapped a model before. But I understand the idea of literately taking it apart like a pattern, to later sew it back up.
Oh man my teacher showed me this person, and while I actually feel their undercharging for what they do, it's so far out of my budget at current. Their work is absolutely amazing though and I love seeing what they produce. I would love to commission them one day though, that price for that size and quality of work is so dirt cheap, it's hard to resist even when you don't have the money!

The end result is amazing.. I should really try doing something like this sometime! :]
Thanks, after I made it in 3D, I prepped the model for all the requirements to be printed at Shapeways with this material: http://www.shapeways.com/materials/fullcolor
Check out the video there of some of the process.
A close look at the main photo here, you can start to see the stepping pattern from the layer passes by the printer.

Wow, looks like you're a sculptor, I'll have to check your stuff out.
Sometimes you can print in other, stronger materials then paint, just depends. One nice thing with 3D prints, you can leave it up at shapeways with a mark-up for anyone to order at any time, like this one here. I've only had one order of it though:

Thanks
Got your note, I'll have to wait to respond until I get home from work

DUDE that badge looks super awesome.
does this count as jewelry allready?

That’s so cool O_O
Its came out better then I expected and with an awesome finishing colour. Its there a way I could get a commission from you to have a badge done of my character in time for EF in September?

I love this. I have always been a fan of 3d printers, but really cool to see something like this :D
Oh man, would you be willing to take commissions for these? I'm utterly fail at 3d modeling but the idea of having one of these badges made is EPIC.
would you take a commission for one of these in the future? I would love to have a few things done up for my friends perhaps but i'll have to think abuot it ofcourse cause i want to make sure i get it right.
OH MAY GOD! I never seen badge like this, its cool idea and cute and all omgomgomg! :D
Epically futuristic. Oh man, time to get a Shapeways account, hollow out a model, and start reserving artist tables :D
That's fantastic! I've had a tiny bit of experience with the Formiga P100 rapid-prototyping machines at our school, dealt with those powders for a semester xD and I must say the print quality looks fantastic on your badges!
Holy hell! This place would be GREAT to get one of you're models made into a maquette for a portfolio or something, I will DEF be checking them out to see if I can't make some of my characters and models into reality with this.
If I did a drawing, would you be able to 3-d model it for me, I've been wanting to get some action figures to sell for a while,
I'd be able to draw something in return for your services of course :)

Jeeeeeeeeez definitely an incentive for me to learn how to work with 3d modeling.
I have no idea what I'm doing in Zbrush though. I need an actual class or something to help teach me but classes usually use maya I believe.

this..is just too awesome for words!! Very very nice :3
Holy cow, that is just too awesome! I'd love something like that.
this looks amazing im just jealous because i know nothing of 3D so cant get one lol
Absolutely adore this, and I'd kill to have one, haha.
Passing it along the friend-chain~

Wow. This is really neat. That's something that definitely stands out!
This is totally, absolutely, positively AMAZING!!!! I think you just blew my mind... *EXPLODES*
Holy crap. This might be the *coolest* thing I have seen online in forever and honestly makes me regret spending so much time doing traditional art. YOU SIR ARE BADASS.
wow wat does it use to 3d print, we have rapidprototyping here at osu, but its kinda fragile from wat ive seen
and 31 dollars seems super cheap
and 31 dollars seems super cheap
Oh wow this is amazing :D I'd love to get this done with some of my characters
This is wonderful ^^
I really hope you can do badges like this on commission :3
and figurines would be pretty cool ^^ Would very much like to have a personal desk-buddy

where do you get these i would love to have one *stares intently* must.... have...
If anyone actually wanted order it, it can be here:
http://www.shapeways.com/model/1270....._project_.html
But I suspect no one would want to order a badge of someone else's character. If I had done this years ago, I would of loved to try and do commissions, but I just started an intense online school for the next 18 months, giving me no real time to do something of this magnitude, except in rare occasions.
Shapeways is about to launch a new price calculation, so this might get slightly cheaper. Now it won't charge twice for areas that overlap. Like most the body with the frame. Hard to imagine it would get even cheaper than it is, as $31 includes shipping from Netherlands to the US. I got a quote from another company with the same printer in the UK, they wanted $200 or more.

Man, if I knew someone who I could commission a 3-d model from, I would SO get one of these!!
I've watched one of the machines that makes 3d prints work...So fuckin' cool, this is a great idea.
The printer used does full color as it prints. So all I had to do is upload a model with the texture I made. Can't wait to see what the future holds, but this already pretty darn cool.
Hypothetically, how much would you charge for a 3D model of someone's character? Not for the 3D Print it'self, but just for the file you create with some modeling program that they would then later use to make the print?
Thanks for the interest. I managed to make this rather quick considering all I wanted was a print and not a working model for animation. Though, I might be slower than the average modeler, so my quick could still be slow. Thus, pricing might not be very economical for both parties, unless I charged less to start a business, then once I improved, raised the price a bit, like some fursuit makers start off.
Sadly though, this was posted on the verge of starting an animation school that will eventually be full time work for 18 months along with my normal job. So I can't even begin to consider this. I may only do some projects for personal reasons here and there.

Well let me know if you ever think you might wanna try it again, and can do something feasibly affordable. ^.^ These are so unique they'd be great to have!
I didn't even know they had 3D printing : O
It almost looks like its made out of bouncy ball material, the kind in 25 cent machines.
Great job on designing it!

maybe because theirs so many fox's and k-9s out there make it customizable?? this is pretty damn cool! now i wish i knew how to use 3d programs. is it really made out of sand stone??? or is it a plastic just called sand stone?
O_o How much would you charge for one of these? They're awesome!
THIS! IS! AWESOME!
Man, if making props for Team Fortress 2 maps didn't motivate me to learn Blender, this sure as hell will.

Such a wonderful idea, and so very well finished off! Kudos to you for taking the time to make a 3d model of it and whatnot, really came out lovely!
Im so confused as to how this works... it looks like it's made of painted styrofoam, but you said it was sandstone, right? And I also read that it was 3D printed.... I want to know how you print sandstone? Cause my brain hurts just thinking about that... D:
They call it sandstone, but it's gypsum based. It's very hard rigid, with some weight, so nothing like styrofoam. Yes, printed, as in a printer lays down a thin layer with the material, color, and support powder, and continues to make several thin passes, could take a day, until the model is finished. Then they carefully blow away the support powder to reveal the object. Finally they do an extra step to strengthen the material and make it more vivid. There are other materials that are stronger, can have thinner walls, flexible, glass, metal, but at different costs, pros and cons, like no color.
So then it's kinda like that laser art? I think they take a block of glass and shoot a laser through it to form a 3D object inside it.
My mom has a few things like that... cats, dragons, whales, butterflies... it's what I was thinking of, but I wasn't too sure. :<

This is the most amazing con badge I have ever seen! Are you currently open for these and how much do they cost? :D
Thanks so much for the comment. I can't wait to wear it for the first time at FC in a few months.
Can't really take any commissions. School work is just too blood tough with a full time job. I haven't even been able to touch my next personal 3D print project for two weeks. It's been a real bummer to get into 3D printing just when I have no time. This badge literally came in the mail the day school started, a day after I got back from AC that I tried to print it in time for.

Oh my goodness.
If I had a boatload of money, I would have you model Haku and order one of these. Eeeee. ;w; So cool!

Wow o.o! This is amazing, I'd love to have one of my own! I'll have to experiment on my computer <3!
Totally want to commission one of these from you! :) It's amazing!
I know this is really old and you've gotten a lot of comments already but this is the coolest thing I've ever SEEN.
