Walking Storm
Cover art for a Star Wars fan fiction story by my friend Shalmendo entitled 'Walking Storm' (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/22733743/). It's one of several in a series we've worked on together, featuring his mercenary character Shalmendo and my own character Iri Keltesh, as the pair team up to do a series of investigative freelance jobs for the budding New Republic after the fall of the Empire. In Walking Storm (chronologically the third of Shalmendo's stories and the fourth overall) the pair explore a derelict Imperial research base and slowly uncover an abandoned weapons project. Despite its abandonment, however, the base and project prove to still present some risks and horrors...
Had a lot of fun experimenting with the creepy lighting and shadows on this one!
For the interested, my own story that introduces my character Iri and is set chronologically first is available here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/22736913/ and the first of Shalmendo's stories, 'Finding Iri', is available here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/22467607/

This is frickin' fancy! :o Awesome work on it! Gonna have to check those stories out too; hehe.
Thanks so much! It was a lot of fun to work on this and see how ominous I could make it, plus just drawing anything at all lately feels like an accomplishment. :) I hope you enjoy the stories if you check 'em out! :)
Very lovely work, Doreydear! *snugs* Splendid to see you feeling moved to create art again. <3
Apparently you just have to write a cinematic and dramatic scene involving stompy machinery to inspire him :3
Thanks so much! *hugs* It feels really good any time I'm able to make something these days. :) And it's great to hear from you too!
Ohhhhh wow, this is awesome!! Love the lighting and how it gives the walker a sinister slumbering sort of look. Brings up a good point too - after the fall of the Empire, there'd be SO many bases and facilities that would have to be located, checked and cleared out.
Yeah, I had a lot of fun trying to get that look right! And yeah, as much as the death of the Emperor would've left an enormous power vacuum and a lot of chaos, the Empire was huge, so it feels like there's no shortage of stories to be explored with all the leftover pieces. And that's kind of where Shalmendo's stories come in - we figure the main might of the New Republic is focused on trying to bring back some sort of governmental order and hunt down the worst of the Imperial remnants of power, and doesn't have much resource to check out all these smaller leads and abandoned facilities, but if they can hire the odd mercenary or scout to investigate them and determine their status, it's a better use of resources.
Makes total sense! I always wondered about that from the time I was a kid and saw Return of the Jedi. It's not so simple as just taking out the leadership - all the remaining factions would still be huge, so yeah - that type of story line works perfectly for what would have transpired between the Empire to the First Order.
It's been explored in plenty of 'expanded universe' novels and graphic novels and video games, but yeah always seemed like a huge open question to me. To my understanding the Emperor was power-mad enough that he did all he could to centralise power, wiping out the old senate and making it all about him and his successive Death Stars to use fear to keep everyone in line, but once he was killed the power vacuum was enormous, so remaining fleet admirals and governors scrambled around the scraps to act either out of residual loyalty or self-interest as the entire power structure collapsed... but yeah, all leaving enough remaining infrastructure and desire to return to that sense of order and fascism that those eager to form the First Order were able to sneak off into a quiet corner of space and bide their time.
