I feel terrible posting anything Ive done for myself as Im behind with other art atm, but this was such a quick painting and I wanted to share. the last few months have been busy doing company projects..and as always I walked into them thinking they would be less time consuming than they turned out to be! So I haven't done anything I can share in the longest time. I have a tiny break between projects and hopefully I can use it to catchup a bit.
The past weekend I was also stuck tending to my folks mastiff kennel and between the manic chores for whatever reason the mood for something black and purple began to tail me so starting with a blank black canvas, this emerged. No under sketches, just straight to color. This reaffirmed in me that I am a lousy sketcher. I have a hard time grasping form when working with lineart, ie sketches, but blocking in forms with solid color and chiseling away at the detail from there, that I understand. The original was an hour speedpaint, but I went in and refined the concept a bit, spending an additional few hours on it. Still a quickie by my standards! Wasn't sure whether I even liked it, but a few friends said (WAY TOO) lovely things..so I figured I'd share.
size: Original was about 1000 pixels across, doubled that for the final
time: 3-4 hrs

Wow, the detail on the cloth is amazing. All of the little details in this piece are stunning too, that must have taken you a while to do.

I really dig the rendering on the cloth. Im so used to rendering fur that when people do drapes and fabrics im always wowed XD

earfluff, whiskers, eyes like jewels (very life-like), and intricate embroidery around a panther face made up from highlights make for an enchanted look, and a picture one can stare at for endless time getting caught in the atmosphere.

You have a way with lighting and textures that is BEYOND description. WOW.
Awesome! From the thumbnail I thought it was a photo-manip, it was so true to the animal.
This is lovely...the purple is so rich and those eyes stare into your soul!! I love the limited palette and this is really quite striking...gorgeous work.
speedpaint or not, this is a beautiful piece. The eyes are very piercing and create a very strong energy within the piece :) I like it a lot, good job! :D
terrible eh? you should in fact feel like the queen of Felines. This is absolutely awesome. photo realistic i'd say. lighting, shading, everything is borderline perfect! I couldn't begin to say how awesome this is!

Its always good to take a breather and schedule time for your self, if you dont you burn out and lose your passion. See what the world would have lost had you not taken the time? Take care of your self, or the Art how she suffers.

I love the Hood had cutouts for the ears! It may not be good for rain but makes more sense the rest of the time ;)

First off, eeee you uploaded it! I love this piece. Loved it the moment I saw it. :)
Secondly, I don't think you are weak with forms, you just see forms differently. You don't see things in lines is what it is - that's why you have trouble making and reading line art - your visual abilities are just not tuned for lines and that's fine - because I wish I can move beyond doing simple line art! xD

This is why I wish you took commissions. The eyes pull you in and the embroidery detail is beautiful.
Now I'm curious, do you also sculpt? I have heard almost the same thing from people who like to work in rough slabs of clay for form and then carve in the details. A different dimension of thinking :)

This is fantastic, until I read your full description I wasn't sure this was digital.... it looks very traditional and is really a fantastic piece. The eyes pull you in, and the hood's colors provide a nice contrast of color.
