I call foul on Martin. Probably the only time I'll get to comment before the long wall of comments. Friendship doesn't mean romance, but he had plenty of time to explain he was in a relationship while listening to all her problems and seeming like the hero in her story.
People are allowed to be supportive, caring individuals without wanting a relationship. It's called being a good friend, and you shouldn't just assume someone's romantically interested in you just because they're trying to help you get on your feet emotionally.

First, duh, second "being a good friend" is letting a new friend know what your relationship status is. Martin and Star shared a staring match that could have been misunderstood as romantic. Martin's had all this time looking after Star, stating how he would help her, how she should relax and be herself. That's easily going to lead to romantic feelings. If Martin, at any point, had let her know he was in a relationship, Star would have seen him as a caretaker, not a potential lover. Hence why I call foul on Martin. I'm not saying Martin is a bad person, but Star is feeling like garbage for the assumption and letting her feelings take over. It takes two to tango.
It's not on him to let her know that until she puts the moves on him. He did everything he was supposed to do, and Star did everything she was supposed to do. After she kissed him, he told her he was in a relationship, and didn't cheat, which is all he had to do. You can't control how people perceive you or how they act on those perceptions, and expecting people to be able to is entirely unreasonable. You can only control how you handle misunderstandings like this, and he handled it gracefully, as did Star. She's entitled to feel embarrassed, because she made a mistake. But he's under no responsibility to inform her that he's in a relationship because, frankly, she never stepped up to bat before jumping right onto first base.
You're misunderstanding two different things, it seems. I'm not saying Martin had bad intentions with Star or anything. But with a friendship, there's always a feeling of connection between two people. And generally being single or not comes up by saying "Oh I'm busy with my boyfriend/girlfriend this weekend. We can hang out another time." It doesn't have to be a full explanation, just a simple thing. Given that Amanda and Lure have their connection as a couple, Star has no reason to feel any romantic connection there, aside from when she had her naughty time. But with Martin, he's the one guy able to share in her deepest secret. He's been pushing her buttons to let her be herself. He's been a really sweet guy, and if they "near kiss" didn't happen, then this kiss would have been the first time to turn Star down. Unless it's a character flaw, which I haven't seen one from Martin so far, Martin seems aware enough to warn Star that he was in a relationship. He already talked about so much else with his life as they got to know each other. Star needed someone to talk to, but they just finished a date, so given her mindset, it should have been clear not to give her any false hopes, in my opinion. This doesn't fit for everyone, but in the context of vulnerable Star, I think Martin should have mentioned his relationship.
Perhaps, I just don't see it as something that he is required to think about. You're the only person I've met with this point of view, therefore it's reasonable to conclude that it's at least a little out of the ordinary to expect someone to have to always inform others of their relationship status if the other person is emotionally vulnerable. It's also unreasonable when looked at from the perspective that Star is responsible for her actions, and it could be reasonably argued that she should have made sure he was single before making a move on him.
I disagree. I often don't feel the need to tell people about my relationships when I'm trying to help them. And whenever someone brings up their relationship while I'm being vulnerable, well, that's the last time I'll ever be open to them, because it tells me where their head and priorities are and I don't want to be seen as a burden and something that needs to be protected against. Star made an assumption, she kissed him without his consent. It's a silly misunderstanding and no one is really at fault, but no one is obligated to talk about their relationships with a brand new friend.
I personally would never offer that sort of information unless directly asked, Like I dunno She was being really vulnerable and open with him and if he was like "oh yeah by the way im seeing someone" it would just..I dunno just feel a bit self absorbed or like out of place maybe? I dunno.
Right, I understand that. It would have been very blunt if Martin goes, "In case you were wondering, I'm taken". But I could see Martin staring into Star's eyes, then looking away and apologizing, leading into his revelation that he's not available. He'd still babysit and look after Star, but that's where it would stop. Star's already been babied and tended to by Tessa, Amanda, and played with Lure, so she would get that. I don't think the mentioning of his SO was to avoid sexual interaction or romantic entanglement, but to prevent Star from going down a road just to be crushed, especially with how she's having to deal with her family, her secret life, and her work life. It would seem like a final nail in the coffin.
Your relationship status generally won't be the first thing talked about with a stranger, let alone a new friend, but they already shared some fairly vulnerable kink time, though in a safe place, and that's something that is completely different than just talking with a new friend. If I spent time at a kink con, that person is on a completely different level than my friends who have no idea what I'm into. Given the budding friendship between the two, and again, given the near kiss scene that Martin was there for, until he changed the subject, it's like Star just jumped on him. She took a last chance moment before leaving him for the night. I think the situation could have been avoided if Martin had stated his status, or again in conversation mentioning his significant other in a casual way. It works for the scene and the story, but it seems odd that Martin is shocked by the kiss, or I feel his reaction is shocked when he's kissed.
I feel the same. I would have felt a bit led on if this situation happened to me. Not just because of the caretaker role, but because of all the playful teasing and such. You made good points so I won’t reiterate but yeah ...
I'm going to have to agree as well, if I was in the vulnerable place that Star is in, I would feel a little weird that someone wouldn't have dropped a little bit of a hint at least that they're in an actual relationship before going out to dinner with me, playing like a caregiver at a non-event, and taking me back to their place and giving me all that attention. Like I guess if Martin hadn't been so willing to indulge in the caregiver aspects maybe I'd feel differently but I think a solid strictly non-play friendship would be in order before doing that stuff. It's too easy, especially for whoever is in the "submissive" role, to get feelings entangled because of the nature of a CGL dynamic imo. I can see where Martin may have just genuinely been acting as a friend and not thinking of it, but if you're going to tease and play with someone you have to be aware that it may come off as romantic flirting instead of just playfully indulging them in something they're into - I think that's important for anyone who's wanting to involve themselves in this type of play. It certainly doesn't ruin anything for me, but it's just something that I did think about after seeing this page.

Truthfully I think the opposite sometimes, I mean considering at this point in the comic only 9 days have actually passed she's been unnaturally lucky. Bumping into a whole community of ab/dl and being accepted, having a playdate then being invited to an exclusive party not before popping into an AB/DL dressmakers place and given an outfit free of charge. I think you've gotta take the bad with the good really.

well there went my theory about tragic ending for previous love, death/hardbreakup which led to him closing off and just now staring to open up again, which is why Manda was so surprised, why everything was a mess at his place, but still keep the ring as a memento around his neck still feeling like they are together unable to let go of her, but then a kitten walked into his life and thought him how to love again...

I suppose maybe not common? I dunno I just lost my first ring...on the honeymoon. then I lost the second ring at work because i work in quite a manual heavy job so it was just a more successful way of keeping the ring safe

Oh god that must be rather awkward. I think I would just shatter in that situation, leave the car, find a taxi, go to the airport, fly to Australia, get a car to the middle of the county, start a new life leading an army of emu.

Star goes for the home run and unfortunately it goes foul. Would be interesting if the relationship that Martin Is in is with somebody that Star may have already met. Still though there’s still friendship to be had and that’s probably the greatest treasure to find.

Huh. Strangely this page is kind of good for me right now. Somebody randomly showed up and messaged me on DA a couple nights ago and asked if I liked this particular webcomic that I haven't read in at least over a year, and when I said yes, they solicited a roleplay from me based on the comic. No actual details. No warning. No reason why they are privately messaging me out of all the other commenters, or if they are going down the line asking everyone to rp (No, the comic is not adbl-related or anything um, "exotic" like that. It just maybe was a little popular in its own little niche, you know, years ago.)

Ha, jumped the gun! Sometimes kindness is perceived as love interest since in this age I have seen a lack of "true" strong friendships. I've had two people who are like Martian - someone super kind and want to do good things just because they truly care about another in friendship.
