He still had no idea where he was. Where was his friend, Deak? He’ll be sick with worry when he finds me missing… Luke wasn’t actually his little brother, but it didn’t stop Deak from thinking of him as one. And Thurlow – he thought the ship captain had fled to Laiyr, but there he was in Balor again the morning after battle along with an entire squad of Laiyran cavalry. He’d brought him the message to retrieve Koa from the Golden Boy, and despite his injury, Luke had gone at once. Had he only imagined his father after that? Was Koa really…?
No! he insisted, stubbornly. It was just another terrible nightmare. It has to be.
He forced himself to his feet then, though his head pounded and belly churned with nausea. It has to be, he told himself again, more firmly. Besides, if those he cared about really had been hurt, he was no use to them in hysterics.
He had to be strong.
For them.

To shield another is a noble cause. But one rarely has the power to protect another without taking the life of the offender. Whether the shield takes the life of another or takes the spirit of the offender through words, it is the shield's curse to bear the pain of both sides. How such a entity hope to not lose themselves to that curse. That Responsibility.
I know this is probably my opinion on the piece. But I really like how the character here seems isolated, surrounded by darkness and the light of the shield is drawing them closer to a possible brighter future. It's very beautiful.

Heh, you may not know the story of the character, but in a lot of ways you're not far off :) This particular character is (essentially) caught between choosing friends and choosing family - he wants to protect both, but they become mutually exclusive... What to do?
There are strong themes of darkness and light (and other dichotomies) in my story, so I wanted to reflect that in the high contrast and pseudo-monochromatic palette :) You're correct to think it was intentional. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments <3
