Moss's writing in the anime makes a lot less sense then his writing in the manga. Regardless, he's one of my faves solely because of how he's a big, fat, tough guy who has a soft spot big as his head for children and those he considers his family. He's one of few Ginga characters who has this as an actual personality trait, not just as an ineffable part of his Obligatory Heroic Moral Code. There's nothing I find more endearing then a huge, miserable bastard who coos at tiny babies and is endlessly proud of his kids.
Moss is always described and drawn as being two things: 1) fat and 2) huge (which isn't as redundant as you'd expect). English Mastiffs are big dogs, sure, but they aren't the size of adolescent hippos. So I decided he's a Mastiff mix to sorta justify his wide, tall stature. The spiked collar also had to stay because it's a look and a half. I have no idea why he has a buncha scars that look like the zipper marks you get from surgery - stylization, I guess? - but now they're legit zipper scars. To keep consistent with the canon, no, there is no explanation for why he has them.
