Some of you have likely seen this already from a sneaky person who preempted me in posting it (I just keep forgetting to get around to uploading it!). This was a quick Christmas gift painting done last year for a special someone.
The idea was going for a mix of classic portrait paintings and early photographs (I used to collect old photos I would pick up at antique stores..I rather like to think of the stories the people in the pictures may have told me and the stories the pictures themselves tell. It"s always somewhat sad to me to see pictures in antique stores..to think someone did not care enough to keep those people"s memories alive. That"s likely why I buy them up and though I don"t know their real stories, I"d like to think their memory is still alive because someone cares enough to hold on to their picture)

Thats nice that you buy those photos! I never see old photos in shops..=(...I would buy them too...interesting..
It's just....a masterpiece...I can't describe it in any other way.
It's awesome, but that lock of curly hair seems to be defying gravity.
I still say this is an awesome picture. I love how well you rendered the detailing on his coat.
BWAHAHA Why is milk squirting out my nose? I'm not drinking any XD
I can just imagine him IRL trying to hold still at a portrait sitting.

I can hold still when I have to. :<
...and are you sure that's milk? :X

*stares at Baggy, staring at Aura, staring at baggy..and sketches the staring competition*
if you make silly faces like that, they will stick forever o:..hasn't your mother ever taught you that??? *scribbles silly face!*
That's really beautiful, especially all the fine detail. The only crit I have is that the line of the mouth seems crooked compared to the rest of the features.
you are right but then I could pick apart this piece for hours prolly(as I do with just about everything I do!), I won't though as it was something I painted more with feeling than a critical eye C:
S'ok. I've just noticed that in a couple of your pieces, but we all have our problems. Otherwise, it's a stunning piece.
Lovely! I really like the lighting and the overall feeling of the picture.. And all the different textures, looks corgeous.
And what you said in the description, I agree, quite sad.. But I think that's really sweet of you to pick them up and hold them :)

Very stunning, beautifully done, as always, Balaa. =) Thanks for sharing.
Oh wow, I am absolutely loving the detail on the coat! <3 you did a FANTASTIC job!
Wow, this is very good! I'm impressed by the detail that went into this, in particular the clothing.
You know, I think the thing I like best about this is that I can SEE his real life features mixed with Bagheera's in this piece...especially in the face. It's like seeing Kim's eyes and Kim's cheeks but them mixed with Baggy's muzzle and other features. I think that makes it so much more beauitful, because you can see both sides of him, and how well you know them, as well as the soul singing from within.
I love the Baroque period: the music, the art, the fashion, the architecture... Oohh this pic is glorious! Beautiful portrait.
*heabumps baraa gently* words cannot describe the joy I felt when you gave it to me at Christmas. it is a most beautiful picture and I will always treasure it so... :>
Wow, awesome painting! I love the detail of the embroidery on his lapels!
This is fantastic work and is certainly up there with my top favs. I love the detail as well as the old portrait look to it.
Would it be a social faut-pas if he'd start hacking up a hairball?
Beautiful portrait! A very nice range of values and some marvelous details on his clothing.
A couple of my relatives have large stashes of old pictures from many decades back that were never labeled or organized, so we no longer know who is who in the photographs. As you said, it's interesting to look through them and figure out what stories the people in them might have to tell - even more so when you know you're related to the person somehow but aren't quite sure of the details. :)

I rather like that sort of thinking you got there. I've honestly never looked at it that way myself, but I like the view point. With that kind of emotion and connections you'd likely make a hell of a photographer.
I'd also like to say that this picture is very good as well. gotta love them gentlemanly felines :P this didn't happen to go to Bagheera did it?

Yes it absolutely is that very feline, Bagheera [:. Thank you for the lovely words too!
Good Ol' Baggy. he's such a handsome looking goof ball. :P
and you're quite welcome, I do mean them. Your photoshop and similar software knowledge would also lend you well to photography.

yes, but its a good thing. I mean...do you really wanna be a sadball? :3
aww, looks like intricate pencilworks. I caught myself wondering how you did it... digital, soso.
you picked a great reference, sophisticated gentleman is spohisticated indeed. he looks not afraid to grab a tool or a gun to get things done, yet he can be as high-up as any other lord in the parliaments.
I can understand you with those old photographs. I wished I could afford them myself, but all I can get are occasional ancient steel/copper rpints and lithos of animals from all over the world... the oldest was dated 1735. :)
there was that book with erotic photographs old and new, beginning with late 19th century. there are some pretty pictures to be used in that book. :)
I guess you're looking for old postcards, too? there can be awesome pistures hidden within them stacks at flea markets. :)

Actually what I'm often most surprised by is just how cheap you can come by the photos. I often find them in giant 1$ bins..or even less sometimes. And postcards are good fun too, especially if they were already circulated and written on <:.
photos are rarely traded outside specialised shops here in germany, postcards are more common, sotosay. I'll look out for some next opportunity. there is one downtown each saturday, there should be something nice to be found. :)
Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were in germany! I'm sure you can find far more unique and old antiques in germany than here in the states though [:. But as far as vintage photos go, they are really abundant and easy to come by here.
I'll look out next time. if nothign else, they make for a nifty collection. :)
the intricate details in the cloth and clothes looks great. piece overall is wonderful
i absolutely love classic/traditional portraits.
(what do you mean its not a photograph?!?! nice work!)

Quite a fine design, I really like his pose but overall the quality is just top notch. Well done of course.
What a great and interesting hobby and motivation to get the pictures from them. I can understand what you mean. I is sad to see that the pictures are placed there and not at the families homes, where the belong to. You did a brilliant job on this gift for Bagheera. The spirit of the century, you wanted to capture lives within it. The clothes here are elegant and kind of fancy, just like the ones that you should wear when taking a picture like that. The design is wonderful and fits Bagheeras natural, noble appearance pretty well. Great one^^ I love it.
