Story:
Everyone points out how bad the story is, and by the time your two levels in, it's obvious why. The plot is so clumsy it's as if it's been lifted straight out of a 6 year olds fan fiction. I've never seen characters portrayed so far out of character most people think it's a joke. Yes, they actually do put the canonically most gullible and least intelligent person in charge, and they do turn Tails into a simpering coward, who spends the entire time Sonic is imprisoned running around being scared. Yes, the kid who's as smart as Robotnic, and a hero in his own right, doesn't try to free his best friend, but hides in terror the whole time.
This game is the worst fan fic ever, and it's an official release, and cannon to the comics. Which are actually good and well written despite this, and it's a big despite. (seriously, go read the comics)
review:
Game:
It's clear that Sonic team spent a lot of time effort and money on this game. They just spent it all in the wrong places... specifically on the backgrounds and realistic lighting. The background. You know, that thing your not paying attention to, because your too busy looking at what you are doing, and what you are about to run into. Imagine how much better the game would have been if that time, skill and money had been spent on gameplay, level design and story writing instead?
Especially considering that the overly detailed, complicated background being bathed in the same exact mood lighting as the main stage actually makes it harder to see what you are doing.
It's hard to see the obstacles in your way until there half way on top of you, because they are virtually indistinguishable from a background filled with objects all light the same way to the same level of detail, the only way you really tell is by how fast it's moving. By which time the object is almost half from the edge of the screen to your character. Don't believe me. Compare the render style of Lost world to Forces. If you want to know what Sonic should look like just look at Sonic lost world. A game that had many issues of it's own. But it nailed the render style for a sonic game perfectly.
