Well, I can't say I blame you. Let's wrap this up.
When Pinion thought back on this moment it thought it handled the rejection very well. "All right," it said after a pause, and after very consciously waiting for its feathers to settle against its back. "Go. No bird said that you had to talk to me."
The stork muttered something which Pinion didn't catch but thought it was some kind of curse, and walked away.
Pinion managed to avoid saying, "Goodbye then," to the other bird's back, and left to find a quiet spot where it could reflect.
