Maybe the old saying about how you "are what you eat" applies here or something. Ire tends to get just as territorial of "his" treasure collection as any dragon would, so when little adventurers sneak in thinking that long missing dragon must have moved along, he doesn't tend to take to it too lightly. It isn't a huge inconvenience however. More like a snack delivery service. One he can have some fun with.
