They don't know what the Hell that thing is. They don't know what it eats (if it eats to begin with), or what it's after, running through the endless dunes of Aryatis (Panther empire's home planet). They never found any carcass or indicator of reproduction. They can only assume it's even a living being; hence why, they call it a genie.
In itself, it appears to be completely harmless, just running around without once trying to interact with the people that see it in any way. But even before the metallic spring noise of its feet can be heard in the distance, witnesses all hear a buzzing noise in their ears that have been reported to cause headaches.

Wow thanks; I didn't consciously come out with this design, it was in a dream, likely a mix between the martians' description from War of the worlds, and a random line from a translation of Goethe's second Faust
I can definitely see the War of the World inspiration, but I'm not quite familiar with Faust, unfortunately.
Well, the line I'm thinking of is from a representation of Shakespeare's "A midsummer night's dream" which happens in the play (it's complicated, and it's been a while since I've read it)... where Puck is described as having a "spring foot" or something like that, at least in the translation I got. It must've confused me just enough to make my subconscious want to figure out how it would work, during the night
Oh, Puck! Iirc he was described as light footed or something similar when I read it. That's an interesting translation, though!
