He got surprised by a couple of blue glowing ghost hands that have their own plans to deal with curious visitors. Those let his clothes disappeared and gave him the first part of the better fitting uniform. But he also needs a reliable tool to fulfill his new destiny, so they threw a golden and ancient staff at him. This weapon should help to take care of some new piece-disturbing visitors. However, he does not look terrifying enough as a guy with colorful towels and some weird looking golden plates at his hip.
So there must be some more minor adjustments to his appearance. The ghosty mitts grab his body and push it to the ground. While doing so, they also put a warm and thick layer of brown goo on him and spread it all over his body. It started at his arms and legs, and it quickly expands all over the rest of the human being. They squished his feet and the face to form those like the ancient Egyptian god of death. They strengthened him and gave him new powers by changing the physical muscles. They increased his potential dealing of damage to his bare paws by growing sharp and robust claws.
After the shadowy hands finished their work on his human body, they put on the remaining parts of his new armament and painted on some patterns which identify and lock him as the guard of this ancient temple till someone else will replace him.
But it seems like that he already accepted his new fate.
