St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, is often depicted as having a dog head. The reasons for this are varied, but the most popular being that he came from a land of dog-headed, cannibalistic people before he sought Christ and renounced his heathen ways. Upon baptism, this is when he was said to have gained human appearance. I've depicted him here as a wolfhound..because..well, I like them XD
This scan doesn't show it but the lighter parts are actually gold paint.
This is the only art I've ever made that I'm actually going to hang in my house!

wonderful work! wow, this turned out awesome. i feel the urge to go in the basement, find a piece of wood and go at it with some colour pencils xD
Definitely one of the most original pieces I've seen on FA, and very well done at that. Props! C:
This was absolutely gorgeous in person - even better than the photos. Lovely!
Wow! This is a great concept! And I love the old-worldy look to it, super win!
I can't hear the name "St. Christopher" without thinking of Tom Waits. (Love this'n, though.)
This is quite beautiful. The colors are very intense and just leap right out!
Very nice composition!
Very nice composition!
Ya gotta love any saint whose origin story involves cannibalistic dog-headed people.
Nice work, though I prefer the wolf-headed version of Chris myself. Mostly due to the amazing way that version links in with the medieval/Renaissance Eastern European legends of the Benandanti -- werewolves who traveled to a "land beyond the sea" where they fought the Malandanti, witches and demons, in order to save the harvest from being stolen away. Chris would have made a great patron for them, I think.
This is great work, Thornwolf.

Woo! Makes me happy :D I hope he doesn't shower with it though, I forgot to mention to him that they're not water drench friendly (rain's fine though)
I've been wearing mine everyday too XD Too scared to sleep with it, though. I've had necklaces break in bed :T
Woo!
I tend to sleep with mine, haven't had any problems, but I took it into the shower the other day.
...
Fail Niko is fail. It's fine and fixable but yeah, DON'T DO IT, SON!

Color, texture, composition, content - all top notch! A joy to look at!
Is this patterned after Orthodox iconography? If so you did a good job; the highlights and shading on his clothes and armor look pretty spot-on. -Although I think the hands and face may have a little too much detail/depth.[/nitpick] Is there any particular reason for the green background, instead of gold or blue?
I like green :) It matches my house, and also I was mimicking a color pattern on an existing St. Christopher piece.
Interesting Cyrillic styling. What language is the translation in? I can read Cyrillic, but the dialect of the name is escaping me because I'm unfamiliar with the saints.
I nabbed it from an old old old version of a st. christopher painting, which I believed was some bizarre morph of greek and cyrillic, to the extent of what I read. It's aesthetic, I'm not passing it off as authentic, but I did copy it from somewhere. Heh, it's probably total Engrish XD
Hahaha, awesome. My training with the alphabet is mostly Russian with some Serbian peppered in for good measure, and what I make of it is this: Kristofora. The first and third letters are rather strangely shaped for what they are supposed to be, which makes me inclined to agree with you that it's got some Greek influence.
I care about things no one else cares about omg. :C
Regardless, the aesthetic looks quite nice!

Oh wow! This was a great find!
I was actually considering drawing St. Christopher on Draw Mohammed Day.. I still have a design in mind, but idk when I'll find any time to do it. ANYWAY... I'll stop babbling. This was really awesome, and it made me happy to see it.

Wolfhound :) I realize without a size comparison he can easily be confused for a schnauzer though.
This is a really cool piece. I can't believe that I only now saw it.
Really excellent work on this icon.

Wow! Someone actually did a St. Christopher with a dog or wolf head, and I missed it?
This is great, and I like the choice of a wolfhound look.
Let's hear it for the patron saint of werewolves!

You know, I usually think of St. Christopher when looking for furry saints, but Jesus WAS the lamb of God. Anyhoozles, very nice work.
I always love seeing furries in old armor! Thanks for sharing! The use of gold paint turned out very nicely. I use that color a lot myself to get that cool shiny effect in the right light.
Actually reading a book currently about werewolf folklore and history that has alot in it about this guy :) cool stuff
Thank you for saying so! That's a very huge compliment :)
Oh man, I found this again after talking about it to a friend and just wanted to tell you how much I still adore this, and wish I'd been able to nap the original with the gold paint. I love the necklace I got instead, and wear it all the time. I get compliments at church about it as well! Our parish priest thinks its pretty cool.
Amazing as always. <3

Thornwolf,
Thanks for putting this piece in the FC'2013 art show. I was on staff and talking a bit with you of this painting and the fact you had kept it for your living room, made me decide to buy it. All the more no one else seemed to want to, kept it within my reach.
I can't see myself hanging art that is too blatantly furry in my place, but this one fits the bill: stealth and very artistic. Non furs will gawk at your rendering :)

Oh wow thank you so much! I'm so very happy he went to a good home, and I'm sure you will get many a nice and fascinated comment about it as I did when it was hanging in my home (which also has zero furry art hanging in it, haha).
If people are ever curious, the dog head is in fact canon due to a mistranslation. I have a dog headed St. Christopher medallion hanging in my car XD more stealth furry. Here's a little bit about it.

Thank you again and it was great talking to you!

You know, I'm not too surprised: it reminds me of art you could find hanging in british pubs or old bars in france. Maybe it is part of the reason I decided to buy it ^^. Somehow it reminded me of something familiar.
Keep up the good work, and maybe do more of these. If you need inspiration, maybe you can consider remaking famous old art... For example the epic Bayeux tapestry, or some chinese market scene?

This is an awesome work! I heard about the story of Saint Christopher myself and I also made a pic related to it:

This picture is amazing! Thank you for posting it on FA! A very good friend of mine who is Eastern Orthodox owned an icon which feature Saint Christopher with a dog head. Some say that this depiction goes back to the ancient Egyptian god of the dead Anubis.
I love this! Thank you for sharing. I actually got a St. Christopher medal with a dog head on it from an independent seller a billion years ago. I have a few St. Christophers but this is the only one with a dog head. I thought it was super cool to see out there "in the wild".
