DISCLAIMER: Apparently CV Dazzle isn't effective anymore. It was fun while it lasted. https://twitter.com/kyleauxren/stat.....523171842?s=20
On its surface, the title track for Violet's new EP 다즐 (Dazzle) is about impressing your friends with stunning fashion, but a close look at the video shows there's more going on. The looks she's wearing throughout aren't just meant to stun onlookers. CV Dazzle is designed to fool facial recognition software by rendering faces asymmetrical and obscured. At a time when South Korea is using facial recognition as an airport security measure, and as molka (the use of hidden cameras to spy on unsuspecting women) and revenge porn become increasingly widespread, Violet slyly acknowledges how fucked everything is while still smiling and dancing through it all. When she belts out "who's that girl" during the bridge, she's speaking from both the perspective of a jealous onlooker and a confused algorithm, all while making a nod to the likes of Madonna, Annie Lennox, and Robyn - any of whom would love to have a song like this gracing their discography.
- Furlitzer Jukebox
Violet's in the dressing room, getting her avant-garde makeup done in preparation for a music video to a song that's as catchy as it is sneakily subversive.
