This is a commissioned character presentation created by damiem .
This is the seventh of several character presentations that I and members of my online D&D group have commissioned Damien to depict. These presentations show off the Player Characters (PC's) of our Tyranny of Dragons campaign's adventuring party known as the Dragon Tamers. The party currently includes seven members. (Since I am the DM, I am technically not one of them!)
As of this submission we are currently in "part two" of the campaign, The Rise of Tiamat!
This PC is played by the no-nonsense and insightful eyelessmike, and the PC's name is Guldroth (a male gnoll cleric of the Chaotic Neutral alignment).
While some monstrous races can have their non-evil exceptions or certain redeeming qualities, it can be argued that the brutal gnolls have none. Driven as an entire race by an insatiable, feral hunger from their demon god Yeenoghu, the gnolls of Faerun are sentient yet savage beasts, tall and looming humanoids entirely bent on pillaging and domination. They are the kind of monsters parents use to scare their children into behaving.
Guldroth was once such a gnoll. One day while on the hunt he encountered an elf paladin named Tallstar, a hero who had been recently wounded in battle. Guldroth considered such prey to be easy, but instead the gnoll sustained a heavy sword blow to the skull once the elf showed he was not so helpless. The paladin perished not long after this fight, and Guldroth became unconscious upon succumbing to his wound. Guldroth's head wound, which later became a prominent scar between his eyes, changed something within the gnoll: it somehow severed the innate connection he had with Yeenoghu. Yeenoghu was an influence that had always instilled aggression and hunger within Guldroth, but for the first time the gnoll felt new emotions, including fear and self-doubt. Guldroth then attempted to rejoin his tribe, but was unsuccessful and was captured by humans upon showing the most curious behavior of any gnoll: throwing up his arms in peaceful surrender.
Indeed, compared to his old self, Guldroth had become incredibly placid. Without his link to a pack mind he had become an individual.
Despite obtaining a spark of self awareness Guldroth was still driven by base urges, and so one day while in captivity the starving gnoll forced himself into a kitchen. No one was hurt by the event, but it did anger the locals, causing the gnoll to owe a debt which he could not easily repay. Yet in a stroke of luck the gnoll actually gained gradual acceptance due to his lack of aggression. He was given many menial tasks which involved the kitchen and his prison. Then a strange miracle happened some time later: Guldroth was seen seasoning some meat and mixing ingredients. The gnoll was learning, but more importantly he was willingly choosing to obtain a (non-violent) craft. Months later Guldroth was making stews, and a year after that he became a skilled cook in his own right, his improved usage of Common and his strictness for good quality giving the results he desired.
Eventually a dwarven cleric named Oakbelly encountered Guldroth. Fascinated by the incredibly strange gnoll, Oakbelly paid off Guldroth's debt and took the gnoll as his apprentice. Oakbelly was a member of the Ordre des Repas Exotiques, an organization of adventurer-cooks skilled in preparing wild flora and fauna and masterful at creating feasts. The clerics of this organization worshiped "the Hunt," and over the course of seven years Guldroth became both a fully fledged cleric and a chef, and was one of the incredibly few monsters ever fully inducted into the Ordre des Repas Exotiques. Guldroth's once insatiable fury and hunger as a gnoll was transformed into the need to gain legendary culinary renown.
After striking out on his own and becoming an adventurer, Guldroth was captured by soldiers of the Cult of the Dragon and imprisoned as a slave in the Skyreach Mines. Thankfully Guldroth was freed upon meeting the Dragon Tamers adventuring party and the gnoll quickly became a useful ally. He even became a Dragon Tamer himself.
While with the party the gnoll has performed several great deeds, including becoming the first place champion of a cooking contest at the Festival of Fares, and becoming the lead chef of the kitchens in the dwarven-built settlement known as Thur Moldan. However, being a gnoll hasn't made his life easier: during his adventures Guldroth has gained the ire of Ghorvas Rockharvest of the Ordre des Repas Exotiques, and not everyone is accepting of his monster status, especially that of a fearsome gnoll. Such things do not damper Guldroth in the least, though. To him, anything edible in the world is a potentially great ingredient that must never be wasted. And he will fight with all he has to fulfill his ambition of becoming the greatest chef that ever lived.
