Halloween. Season of the werewolf. Rex the werewolf was well known for his ego boost over the season.
For his two closest friends and part time lovers, this ego made his power and aggression even more unbearable than normal, especially when they were more inclined to enjoy a quiet party with Sylvia and some of her friends on the beach to celebrate the season. Sylvia was making herself at home on Apollo’s couch, feet dangling off the end of the arms, long tail dangling from the edge of the cushions, Apollo seated on the floor, like the loyal pup he was, head resting against her shoulder. Alexei smirked every time he saw them snuggling up to each other like that - as casual as his relationship with Rex, yet they seemed to be so in-tune with each other, almost seeing the other as an extension of themselves.
He’d been enjoying their company and planning of the halloween party when his phone began to vibrate - repeatedly.
“What is that noise?” The blue girl grumbled as she twisted over, looking over Apollo’s shoulder at their notes. “You’re a little short on the amount of alcohol we’re going to need, aren’t you, dear?” The blue dog crossed out the number of vodka bottles she’d wanted - rounding the number to a solid twenty.
“It’s my mobile.” Alexei let out a sigh as he saw the same name flashing on his screen every thirty seconds.
“Rex?” Apollo smiled.
“Yeah, he’s ah...suffering with the spooky season again.”
“Suffering?” Sylvia asked confusedly.
“Ah he gets...extra wolf-ish over halloween, loves to revel in the attention people give him during halloween - werewolf and all that.” Rex smiled awkwardly. “I wish we could get him to calm down.”
“Are you sure it’s that and not that he didn’t get an invite to the party on the beach?”
“He would be invited if he didn’t get so...heavy handed with other partygoers, you wanna go there to get drunk with your friends and go home after a good evening and instead you’re getting touched up by a super horny brute who goes mad with his ego over the season?” Alexei grumbled.
“You wouldn’t complain.” Apollo remarked, getting a swift smack over the ears by Sylvia.
“What if you could calm him down? Then he’d be able to come to the party, right?”
“How do you calm down a 2 metre, 350lb creature with the strength of two normal guys without just submitting to him?”
“Hey ‘Pollo remember what you told me about your time in the college dorm? What happened halloween there?” One of her hands was caressing his ear and a blush was creeping up his cheeks.
“Oh about what people got up to, o-or the pranks?”
“The pranks, I mean, even Rex has a sense of humour - why not prank him into letting all that testosterone out?”
“One prank wouldn’t be enough!” Apollo cried out.
“Well, who said it had to just be one?”
“I see what you mean, he is a coward and can be easily scared.”
“Really?” Both the creatures on the couch shot a stare at him.
“Umhm, how about you come to my place tomorrow, you can help me set up?”
“Sorry dear, party planning.” Sylvia shrugged. “I’m sure the lovely Apollo can go.” He nodded eagerly.
The following morning, armed with a backpack full of halloween costumes and what Apollo could only describe as “spooky tat” he found himself further into the beach town at the temporary apartment home of Alexei.
“What do you want some of this guff for, you can’t seriously tell me Rex is afraid of tiny plastic spiders?” Apollo pulled a piece of netting from the bag, wrapped tight into a ball with tiny, finger-sized plastic balls that vaguely looked like spiders on it.
“No, well yes, he’s not keen on the big spiders, but imagine having this thing thrown at you!”
“Ok so what do you need me to do?”
“Well I need you to get in on the scarefest too!”

It hurt to wake up before the brutish werewolf did and in the cover of darkness, a set of red paws trudged out of the bedroom and into the hardwood clad living room, fumbling behind the couch for his fishing rod he’d hooked chains onto ready for his first prank. It had taken enough effort to hide the bag of supplies from the beast, who’d spent the entire evening wondering the house, feeling frisky and aggressive thanks to the early full moon.
He sat quietly, hooking the disembodied head figure onto the chains, dangling it into the air and chuckling as the cat head looked goofy when you knew what it was. A black cat, tongue lolling out, crosses on its eyes - it was supposed to be hung from a tree to scare trick or treating kids but this would be a perfect choice for his first prank. Sneaking back into the room, briefly panicking as the rattling of the chains made Rex twitch in his sleep, he readied himself to give the werewolf the rudest awakening he could manage.
Hanging the disembodied head over the bed in front of the werewolf he braced himself for the piercing sound of the air horn noise coming from his phone. Rex woke with a start and let out a panicked, strangled cry as he scrambled back from the disembodied head that met his eyes. Letting out a snarl as he heard the burst of laughter erupting from Alexei beside him, he reached for the silicone figure and gave it a swift tug - separating the figure from the fishing rod.
“What the fuck, Alexei?”
“Haha! Gods your cry was like a little puppy!” Tears were forming in the corners of his eyes as he finally caught himself.
“Fuck off!” The werewolf snarled at him. “Shouldn’t you be sleeping for your precious party anyways?”
“Oh is someone being grumpy because he didn’t get an invite?” Alexei teased, watching as Rex’s ears briefly went flat against his head. “Or is it because I ruined your thirteen hours of sleep? Shouldn’t you be going to go see the client this afternoon anyways?”
“Ah, I suppose.”
Rex had spent some time with his client, discussing her problems, trying to help her find solutions as she poured out her issues to him. He struggled to keep his eyes open but nodded along politely. She’d noticed the strange figure floating by the windows of the cafe where they were chatting, struggling to keep her attention on Rex.
“Something wrong?”
“No, it’s nothing.” She smiled lopsidedly as she saw the figure gesture to the elongated mouth, asking for her to keep quiet.
Behind the elongated mouth on the Scream mask was Alexei, dressed in a black hoodie that crushed his ears against the plastic edge of the mask his tail disguised behind the cape around his neck. Apollo was fumbling behind him, trying to took the scruff of red fur around his neck into the hoodie before pulling the cords tight. He could only smile like a child and shrug as the dancing Scream monster, laughing as he shuffled, attracted attention.
“Alexei, shut up! You’re going to get us caught before you’ve even had your chance!”
Once he was calm, the canine found the door to the cafe held open and Apollo nudging him through the door. He took his position behind the window, joined by a collection of small kids who had been drawn to the spectacle. Alexei was immensely grateful to the young woman who managed to disguise her growing grin as he snuck up behind Rex he nodded to her as Rex finally noticed her eyes had drifted to the figure behind him.
“Is there something outside that’s distracting you?” Rex turned and was met by the Scream face.
He let out a howl as he leapt from the chair, drawing the eyes of everyone in the cafe before he let out a growl - hearing the muffled laugh behind the mask. Alexei turned on his heels and fled the cafe as Rex gave chase, cursing at him the entire way. As Alexei sprinted down the street away from the cafe, Apollo and the kids could only point and laugh.
“Don’t encourage him!” The werewolf barked at Apollo as Alexei regaled him with the events of the morning, pretending that Apollo wasn’t in on the joke. Apollo only shook his head as he spooned chilli con carne onto rice for each of them, offering Rex his bowl before taking his seat on the floor.
“Sssh he’s falling asleep now he’s eaten his fill.” Rex had left his bowl on the floor and relaxed back on the couch, his head coming to rest between the couch cushions and within a few minutes soft snores were echoing through Apollo’s home.
“Did you still need that thing you asked me for that wasn’t in the bag?” Apollo whispered as he moved to clear their pots from the room.
“You found one?” Alexei beamed.
“Yeah man, Sylvia borrowed it from her brother, dropped it by this morning before the cafe incident.”
The chainsaw was heavy, almost too heavy for the weak Apollo as he placed it on the floor in front of Alexei, who was watching the sleeping Rex quietly.
“What are you waiting for?”
“Rex snores real loud when he goes into a deep sleep.”
Loud wasn’t the half of it, he was almost snoring so loud he could vibrate the pictures off the wall when Alexei decided it was the perfect time. He revved the engine and started the saw before lifting it in the air over Rex’s head.
He screamed.
A huge, girly scream.
It was as if all the testosterone in his body had drained away along with the smile on his face.
The two were laughing so hard that Apollo had almost doubled over, clutching at his chest, struggling to catch his breath before he realised that there was hate in the werewolf’s eyes and felt his smile drop from his face.
“Run Apollo, run!” Alexei yelled out, feeling as Rex snatched his tail to prevent his own escape.
“What the hell is wrong with you two today?” Still grasping their tails, the two had stopped struggling and looked to each other.
“What’s wrong with us? What’s wrong with you every halloween!” Alexei yelled exacerbated.
“What do you mean?”
“You get super...werewolf-y every halloween and it drives us nuts!” Alexei cried out as felt his tail released and he fell forward, catching himself before he fell straight forward. “We wanted to calm you down, for a reason!”
“A reason?” Rex tipped his head.
“A gift. From Sylvia, but please behave yourself.” Apollo disappeared back into the kitchen, reaching for the envelope hidden behind his coffee maker, a ticket for the party inside.
“I can go?”
“Of course you can, you always have been able to!” Apollo declared before smiling and rubbing the back of his neck.

In the cover of darkness, with the beat of the music around them, the three canines and the mustelid girl on the younger man’s arm, had found time to laugh over what had been a torturous day for the werewolf.
“Oh my, he got you good then, didn’t he?” Sylvia chuckled as Rex, letting out another yawn, finally got to the end of his story - pointing out that he’d not even get his solid thirteen hours of sleep after being woken to the disembodied head hovering over him.
“Poor dear.” She cooed, petting one of his giant paws, earning something of a huff of jealousy from Apollo. “You did get here though didn’t you, any of my lovely friends catch your eye?”
“Na, I’ve got some revenge to be taking first.” Apollo gulped and Alexei could only grin wolfishly as he knew the pair had signed themselves up for a night at the werewolf’s mercy. It seemed that despite all their effort, all they had done was delayed the awakening of the werewolf’s inner beast and they were both going to get the full force of his power that night.
