This was a piece done for The Werewolf calendar which is now available for pre-order which just over a month to go before orders close. The calendar features some simply exquisite artwork created specifically for the calendar. The vision of this project is to portray werewolves more as 'real' animals in a manner meant to mimic traditional wildlife calendars. Our only hope is that this calendar can bring a little bit of joy and imagination to anyone that hangs it on their walls C:. We are not looking to compete with or best other visions of werewolves as they all have equal value, but merely want to present this particular vision of the werewolf.
An accompanying info blurb: "Werewolves in west Asia and South America often leave the cities in favor of the dense and often unexplored jungles. Wild wolves in India have long been hunted to extinction, though alleged sightings of wolves in the jungle still persist to this day. It is believed that these sightings are not of wild wolves but more likely werewolves, though photo documentation has not yet surfaced. Werewolves residing in such regions often choose to make their home in ancient ruins of temples and shrines perhaps as a means to keep a link to their human side, or simply because such places offer good vantage points for hunting and shelter suitable for raising a family. Werewolves will abandon these homes if threatened, though in rare cases, such as if their pups are too young to safely move to a new location, they have been known to defend their dens against intruders."
~~~~~
It was technically finished sometime ago but for my own reasons was a piece I was just very unhappy with, despite the amount of time spent on it. There are things I like, but as the artist, I guess all we tend to see is our own shortcomings when it comes to anything create. But it is my hope that others can take away more from it than I can..
Thank you for looking and if you go so far, buying the calendar!!
EDIT: >____< You guys are fantastic. Ive been paranoid about uploading this because of how I struggled with it.. Thank you for the lovely feedback, I feel undeserving!!!
Balaa, this is so beautiful! You captured the lighting wonderfully and the sheer amount of detail is staggering.
Oh wow, that background and the building especially are so gorgeous.
Holy yikes! The pillars and stone carvings are amazingly done! The light, the detail, the furcoat... Fantastic. Absolutley fantastic!
This is my most favored picture for the calendar. :3
Its stunningly beautiful, and the background is so captivating. I've always been a fan of India/India inspired art. Wonderfully done! :D
No words can describe how utterly beautiful, haunting and inspiring this piece is, so I'm just going to sit back and soak in the details.
Amazingly beautiful work, especially on the background ^.^
Shortcomings? Where?!
This is amazing, and I don't think any of your artwork has these so called "shortcomings". You are truly an achieved artist.
It's a beautiful picture.
The fur texturing is really good and the lighting also is awesome.
I can see what you spent a lot of time trying to get right. The lower jaw is a bit small or "underdeveloped" and head is a bit off perspective wise. It's very minor which is why I am sure it has been such a pain. The right forearm is too short as well. I think the ledge pushed you to subconsciously scale it down so it would fit in the area. An easy fix would be to lengthen it and drape the right paw over the ledge.
As a whole though I think this picture is very good and superior to what I could do in photoshop at the moment. Don't stress out about the little things. Do something new and just use what you've learned.
The stone work! O.O The texture and feel of the whole drawing fits together so nicely. It is so beautiful, it takes the breath away. I love the addition of the roots it adds to the idea that these are ruins despite the relative amount of stonework that is intact. You are amazing, there are no other words to describe you.
How you do it I don't know.
But I DO know that it's fantastic.
How very beautiful!
I will be thrilled when I finally have the calender in my paws, and get to look at your art up close!
I was beginning wonder why you hadn't submitted it sooner. It's gorgeous, but you know what I think of it already, right? ;)
Lovely! That month's going to be the one that no one wants to end, that's for certain. I love the mellow, but not at all melancholy, feel to the piece.
gonna say what everyone else has said, but i feel bad not leaving a comment
beautiful~
beautiful~
i subject and such is nice
but i like the atmosphere you pit it in - it really helps build a story for the image
As with any creative output, the artist dislikes it and the fans don't mind those small errors if they ever actually spot them It's really an amazingly well done piece in my humble opinion!
This is absolutely amazing! I so wish I could afford to grab one of these.
I guess all we tend to see is our own shortcomings when it comes to anything create. But it is my hope that others can take away more from it than I can..
Yeah, thats very true =/ , and I know how you feel! But Just know that if I could do what you can artistically, id be like, the happiest artist alive or something. I could live off of my art and not be stuck working retail =/
All I can say is: WOW! That's the most amazing piece I've seen! How can't I fave this?
Holy cow... I've never seen a piece like this before. The architecture and background as a whole is just absolutely stunning. I really feel like you're the type of artist that tries to challenge themselves with every piece they do. While I know it's sometimes hard to see the successes in a piece right away, I think with time you'll realize just how amazing it really is. =)
What could you not like about this?!?!?
I love it. Setting, color, lighting all wonderful.
The werewolf calendar is like the best ever. And your piece is one of many that prove it. Nice work.
That's… wow. I'm lost for words. You really have created such a sense of realism about the piece. Just incredible.
My eyes weep at the detail and how much it looks like a photo.:3 Its fantastic. Goes to show that sometimes our hardest struggles make the best come out in us. You sir, get a gold star.;D
Come to think of it something about it makes me think of the jungle book.:D But thats cool that I can relate with it in other ways, the more I look over it the more detail I see.^^
YAY Im glad it makes someone think of the Jungle book..that was actually the initial thought that inspired me to go in this direction. Thank you for the lovely comments!
Yer welcome.^^ Its somethin I'm gonna have to show my nonfurry friends so they can oggle at it.^^
Something my wife pointed out is the wolf looks alot like a husky I had around the face. Was a good dog.
I'm most taken with the gorgeous background work. The sun and humid-looking sky are especially stunning for me.
Your work is truly amazing my friend! I should of bought more at the con from you, like more stickers or something XD
have you ever though of being a professional cocept artist? because this is amazing!
This is unspeakably gorgeous! You have such an eye for lighting and detail o.o
oh wow, looking great, as usual. those ruins in particular look fabulous :o
I think this is an awesome picture and I love the background details with this. The carving on the stone is an excellent.
That's fantastic. The rock textures alone are enough to make this an awesome piece.
Balaa, your artwork is always ... more like an event than "just" a picture, the textures, the fur, the reliefs - gorgeous and astonishing in detail, very beautiful, it looks so real and it does resemble the jungle ruins from a certain movie ;)
And not a single comment here is undeserved by you, be sure. *sigh* that's a nice thing, that you can get all those comments, see - you don't need to die first for your artwork to be appreciated. =D
That's like from a movie setting, or a part of a dream... I can't really say which exactly but I can say that the picture is beautiful.
I love ruins and the many tales of werewolves have always stirred my imagination to run wild, so this one piece seems like a bullseye to be in a calender :)
That's gorgeous, and as you can tell by my avatar, I LOVE wolves! Insta-fave from this one! :)
This is amazing! Instant fave and new wallpaper on the laptop.
And my order is already in for the calendar.
I have always enjoyed your work. You do such a wonderful job. I am an artist and understand the concept of knowing your own flaws and being your own worst critique. I believe this goes for any type of passion or profession. Keep up the great work!
I can't believe all the detail put into those ruins, I'm definitely buying a calendar ^^
Would this werewolf be male or female?????
Just out of curiousness.
Just out of curiousness.
I envisioned it as a her myself but figured I'd leave that out of the description and let everyone decide for themselves C:. I don't suppose it matters much, I rather like the idea of androgyny ^_^
Haha, looks beautiful tho, thats for sure
^_^
And that's all that matters
:)
You say you're not happy with it, but when I opened this submission I was floored..
The details, especially in the background are stunning...
In fact, the only thing that I think could be improved is the character's expression, and only because I think the eyes look a little, but even the anatomy on the face is superb...
This is so amazing
This is absolutely phenomenal. The stonework alone makes this piece have some history.
This definitely gets a fave. Wonderful work.
Did you draw the background? It looks drawn, yet it actually looks real. If you actually drew it that's freaking awsome:3
amazing how you have the patince to finish such huge detailed pics! And traditional as well! I am an traditional artist and knows how difficult it is. But if I would do a drawing like this, I would freak out and make everything messy in the end! I would never have the patience to finish the forest, or the stone building!
I think this is your best work ever, I understand that artists usually see all the mistakes but really, you are being paranoid since there are no mistakes here! I really adore the concept, the beautiful calm sunlight and the temples. Looks like a photo to me. It must have taken ages to finish all those textures and carvings in the stones, they are amazingly detailed and realistic. AWESOME! :D
Wow, lovely ^^ The title reminded me of a Pure Reason Revolution song I like a lot.
Wonderful image! good jbo =)
Wonderful image! good jbo =)
Breathtaking! The painting is perfect. Love the seenery and the details is out of this world. Good job :)
Darn, it's all been said. This is excellent stuff. There's a quiet power in the pose that's not quite animal, so leaves the viewer wondering... And the whole picture is simple a feast for the eyes.
I can't believe that you were unhappy with this picture XD Artists really are our own worst critique. Gosh, this is beautiful. I am floored with the detail of the stone buildings. And the sky ( and the other colors ) are so smooth and vivid! Looove that fur detail too. Nicely done!
Oh WOW...this is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I hope you don't mind my using it as a desktop background. The details, even down to the carvings in the pillars are absolutely gorgeous.
I love the soft lighting and the way the wolf's body is resting on the stone.
Yes, the Wolf is really well done. But...damn!! that rock and stone work, the relief carvings are insane! }:=)
I didn't know the word "Gloaming" existed until you and Vannie titled separate pieces with it. GREAT MINDS and all that..but yeah, the more you know.
I admit I loved the initial sketch composition you did, but this turned out so beautifully, I love how you did the pillars in particular and am just in awe, I really can't even begin to think of how to do that. Beautiful!
in after everybody else:
nifty atmosphere here. I like the sunset colours... I have never been to india but from various movies I guess you nailed the colours right.
the image not only reminds me of Disneys jungle book, but also of that old movie from the 60's, with Sabu. if I recall right they used equal long-distance shots to set the mood.
the fuzzy fur looks soft enough to touch, and the slender figure hints at a tall being. the pronounced stop in the noserigde and the lower jaw seems to hint at husky, but it could also hint at a human face underneath it. ^^
the closeup of the masonry looks so real, it's amazing! glittering little highlights, dove manure all over it, holes corroded into the stone from countless decades, and the colours are just right. did you have a reference for it? the only thing that falls into my eye is the highlighting around the column's edge. I'm not sure if the setting sun would illuminate it like this... except there be some reflecting brass shield around. not that I could do better...
the far background looks like covered in mist, awesome effect! that rock over there looks like it houses a colony of obnoxious monkeys dreaming of becoming human...
Holy f-in crap that's amazing! Such detail... *drools*
Welp, I just went through your whole gallery... And I think this piece is still my favourite. The detail is incredible, the scene is breathtaking, and I love the tone the colouring sets.
I wish I could get me one of those calendars, but I don't think I can at this point. Maybe you guys'll throw one together for 2011?
Wow, where may I start? The ambience upon the stone ruins is gorgeous and so photorealistic, the background is captivating and the composition is wonderful. Of course, the wolf is lovely and very majestic. I love this picture!
This looks amazing! I especially love the sun in the background. It's beautiful!
Brilliant!
The effect of the sun shining, the red sky, the details in the ruins!
The beautiful wolf!
PERFECT!
FAV.
Not being an artist myself but rather an "enjoyer" of the works of those who are,
I cannot even begin to fathom why you would berate this work. I guess it lies in the
mind and heart of the artist and I don't understand.
I think you should sit on that very balcony with arm around your werewolf and take a bow.
Wow...that's incredible. For a second, I thought that you took part of it from a photograph, as the shading on the columns is absolutely brilliant.
Wow! This is beautiful! You did a great job on the textures.
So let me ask you, did you sell your soul to be the best artist in the history of artists? : P
Absolutely amazing! :) makes me feel all mellow looking at it!
Gloaming is my favorite time of day, along with dawn.
This individual seems furrier than most Indian wolves I seen, so based on the Eurasian or Tibetan wolf I take it? Those two subspecies do live in Jammu and Kashmir. Or am I getting too technical?
This is beautiful piece of artwork regardless.
Another brilliant piece for the werewolf-calendar. Right at the wall next to me right now XD This one is one of my three favourites of all the calendars. The great detail makes me love it. The buliding and ruins in the back- and foreground look so nice and so damn interesting that it would be totally awesome to visit that place and explore them and rest just where this werewolf here rests to watch the sun setting behind the sea of trees and jungle. The wolf itself is done in your usual awesome style and therefore brilliant too. Your mixture of wolf and human is great. You combine both animals just with the right dose of each to create the effect of being able to feel the wild, to make the connection to the wild and free and mysterious world. This is awesome and you have got my respect and appreciation for that^^
