Commission. Photoshop, Zbrush Blenderp: 75hrs, give or take.... probably give. Derp Froggie is present.
If I won the lotto (lol), I'd buy a state of the art computer and cram as many bleeding edge GPUs into it as possible. Then I'd buy C4D with the Octane plugin. Maybe I'd get Vue too. Definitely Marvelous designer. And I would make hyper realistic furries. For now, this is the closest I can come with just Zbrush, Blender, and Photoshop.
The gal herself was sculpted, UV mapped, and painted in Zbrush. The fur was drawn in Photoshop using these techniques: https://www.deviantart.com/bjpentec.....-Fur-703402808 Mixer brush especially came in handy. The render, which was done in Blender, came out looking like grainy shit-ass, so much so that I am no longer going to be using Blender as my main renderer. I've seen other artists do amazing renders in Blender but I just can't seem to make it happen. No matter how simple my scene is or what settings I tweak, I always get grainy shit-ass and I'm rocking a GTX 780 which isn't a bad card- a little dated, sure, but not bad. And I know it's not me because I have gotten fucking amazeballs renders out of Octane in the past. So I'm sorry, Cycles, but you're gettin the boot. I'll be looking at Marmoset for the time being until Octane's free tier comes out... someday. Either that or I'll try Octane through Unity.
The cloth was also painted in Photoshop. I tried Blender's cloth sim and WOW HOLY SHIT DID IT EVER NOT FUCKING WORK. No matter what I did, the cloth always bunched up into a spiky, hateful little ball. It took me less time to paint the loincloth and brassier in Photoshop than it did to get something not even presentable out of Blender's cloth sim. Maybe it's me though. I dunno. I've always been better at the painting side of things than the 3D side.
So yeah. That's the breakdown. Enjoy! -faceplants on desk-

This is absolutely beautiful!
Also Cali lotto is almost a billion right now. One can wish. =.=

Thanks! My BIL played the lotto but we didn't win, of course. I have what I have and it's certainly better than nothing so I'm grateful for that. I'll be happy with PS CS6, Zbrush, and my old rig for at least another year or two. After that, then I'll start worrying.
Ohh...oh my. I'm amazed.
Wonder if she's bisexual, and would appreciate a more mature doe? (fans herself.)

You'd have to ask her owner but if she were mine, I'd say yes. Then again, at least... jeez... taking inventory, nearly all my characters are bisexual or pansexual in some capacity. I'm bad. ^___^;

I somehow missed this. But ooo, you are a baaadd girl! (giggles) Thank you for being that way! You color my dreams.
Definitely enjoying her. She's beautifully done. I was admiring the work on her bra and loincloth before I read your description too. I like them. I'm a big fan of loincloths, as are you, obviously. You've put them on a lot of your girls and girlybois.
Only for as long as I've been watching you, at least! If I remember right, this is the first picture of yours that I found, that got me to watching you. https://www.deviantart.com/bjpentec.....hanks-75061811
Yep you've done it again! More awesomeness in gorgeous colors!
Great, just great artwork! I love her design, really, so sensetive <3
bah. Cloth sims are for people who didn't study art thing slike how how cloth folds. You've probably put more processing cycles to simulating imaginary cloth in your brain than the computer ever will.
Your furries are still 20% realisticer. The time you put into each image in mind-boggling to me, but it shows.

Cloth is tricky but I feel like I've gotten better at it recently after doing some intensive studies. I recently redid this: https://www.deviantart.com/bjpentec.....dies-614865518 and paid special attention to Link and Pyramid Head's clothes. I still feel like I need a lot of work in that department. Marvelous Designer would really help with that but it's sssssssssoooooooooooooo expensive and I cannot justify that cost for what is essentially a glorified cloth sim.

*nods* it's very nice
Yeah, I imagine if you work up the cost tiers, you'd eventually arrive at the super-secret toolkit Hollywood uses to make CGI intended to look 100% indistinguishable from reality. The kind where you're watching a movie and it's hard to guess exactly how much of the shot is synthetic. I'd imagine they ain't charging rates intended for individuals to own it, but whatever they can squeeze out of billion-dollar film budgets.

wow... so much detail!!! ahhh!!! Banksy the thing to get one billion! *gets kicked out*
Heh. Thanks. :P
Alas! Spray painting furries everywhere would probably get me arrested or at least a good ass-whoopin. It's apparently still fairly fashionable to hate furries.

Gorgeous and amazing!
As an aside, how many lights did you have in that render? How large they are?
A very grainy render is often a sign of rays not hitting any light source within the bounce limit. The easiest solution is to set up large but low intensity light meshes to catch any "strays".

I had an HDRI and one decently large sun light. I recently started a piece of fan art for my favorite anime and I tried rendering it in Blender but the results were just atrocious. It literally looked like sand. Same thing: HDRI and one sun lamp. SSAAANNNDDD. Incredibly frustrating. I tried EEVEE and that looked like absolute hot garbage too. I followed a tutorial on rendering in EEVEE and still got hot garbage.
I admit though, where Blender is concerned, it may just be my ignorance. Other people get amazing renders out of Blender so it has to be me. On the other hand, back when I used Octane, I would get AMAZING renders with almost no effort. -bangs head on desk-

Your fur detail and attention to detail in general never ceases to amaze me...
Dayyuuuummm. I am in love. I-I-I want to touch...
Anyway.. (wheew). having done a lot with V-Ray, and liking it's controls better, if you are getting sand, you may have too low setting on what ever controls your pass filters. IOfif you have things too low, to speed up the renders, that may be part of it. Up the shadow masks and the like up above 128, or 512, if you can tolerate 4 hour renders. You currently may have a better machine than me, you are just doing a lot of processor power, and relying on GPU co-processors for a lot of it. You You could do a "Ghetto Hollywood" and scout garage sales and Craigslist for old, core i5, and i7 computers, and set up a render farm in a closet or garage? I am all for more realistic furries. I hope to learn enough to do them myself. (and then animate them). Hey, it's that, or stop eating, so I could comission you <3

Heh. I'll give that a try. Thanks. :)
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with a GTX 780 and 8 gigs of ram. It's not terrible but it's a bit dated by now. I'm dreading the inevitable move to Win10. I've heard literally nothing good about it. At that point, I'll probably have to make the jump to PS CC too. :\ 120$ a year isn't terrible but when you've suddenly and unexpectedly had motherhood thrust upon you (in what can only be described as a rather strange and unfortunate circumstance), you start counting the small stuff. I mean, hell, that was one of my motivations for doing OMAD. Less food in, less money out.

I think I have more RAM than you and am running Win 8.1 OS, which was a shortlived version. However WIN10 is bad, especially since it's ADMINISTRATOR account isn't really administrator level, and it has problems. I have heard nothing about the successor to WIN10 yet which has me feeling nervous. Unfortunately, most of the Linnux Distros aren't really ready for consumer level work (though great for render farms). Macintosh, screwed the pooch about 5 years ago, and left it's professional users without options once they stopped supporting Final Cut Pro and other prosumer apps, while concentrating on their phone business. In any case, see of you can bulk up your commissions enough to buy a new machine?
Adobe Creative Suite , is useful, though, if you take a couple of night classes from the local university, you might be able to swing an educational discount. I won't recommend the piracy route, but it's been known to be done.
I am still sticking with Maya, 3ds Max, and V-Ray as the renderer, at least for now. (and Photoshop, Clip Studio Pro,, and good ol' graphite pencils on paper)

I've heard that Windows discontinued successive versions and 10 is the final deal. Dunno if that's true though. Either way, I'm not looking forward to making the switch. :\
"Macintosh, screwed the pooch about 5 years ago"
Ooooh? How so?
"and V-Ray as the renderer,"
I've never seen a bad Vray render. If I ever get enough money to buy it and a computer that can run it reasonably well, that would be my top pick, though, Octane is a very, very close second.

V-Ray is expensive. I only got it, because a work assignment bought it for me. Steep learning curve though, but there are a lot of good V-Ray recipes on YouTube.
As to the Macintosh, Appple abandoned their prosumer lines and software, for more app development, servicing the iPhone customers. Final Cut Pro, and other cinema software have been either dumbed down, or discontinued.
If that is the end of Windows development, then stick with Win7, as that has been the best version of windows so far. Keep those install disks safe.

Right? Omfg. I wish Microshaft would go back to that. The Windows 7 philosophy is great. It's a stable, versatile, workhorse system that does what you needed it to do without much hassle. Unfortunately, the software I use won't continue being developing for Win7 in perpetuity so it's only a matter of time. :\

I have a friend that does the whole Craigslist thing, to buy up old , obsolete windows machines, so he can keep a copy of 3ds Max version 4 running, specifically hecauwe it was released pre-leasing agreement, and it includes a copy of Biped integral to the software. he's running windows 2000, still and Windows 7. I don't want to go that route either, but it is possible. They really have to come up with a new version of windows, because too many people are complaining about the admin permissions issues in installing software and games.
I will have to start playing with Z-Brush fairly soon, as I want some custom D&D miniatures XD

Oof. That sounds like a load of hassle. Still, can't say as I blame him. My contempt for Win10 is strong enough that I've been holding on to Win7 for some years now... even despite the fact that those odiferous cunts infected my computer with a worm that kept trying to auto-update me to Win10.
As for Zbrush, well, I can't recommend it highly enough. :) You ever want any pointers or help with anything, you know where I'm at.

You always create such masterpieces. She looks so beautiful.
This is one of the most beautiful things I have seen in a long time. My goodness. <3
Everything about this piece is just absolutely beautiful. ;) I can't get over how detailed this is, just a graceful elegant lady, and those lovely shoes! Not to mention that pretty fur... ;)
Ok, let's see...
The background! Damn, that background! Well and the foreground of course. All those colorful leaves, petals, branches, twigs and whatnot. I already said it much to often, but I just adore the flora, you're always creating in your works. Always reminds me of a peacock somehow... It just makes such a great setting.
Speaking of setting - that's also interesting. The marble floor, the kinda greek style pillar, the flower pots and of course that strange, shortish Chaiselongue thingy - great effect with these reflections by the way, the tiger wood texture goes really well with the lacquered finish. I kinda get a secret-garden esque feeling from all of that. It just fits so well.
And of course, the beauty in the center of all that. You know, I actually didn't want to lose to many words on her, but that doesn't work with the amount of detail you put in it. Your fault!
So let's see - we don't have to touch on the fur detail to much, it's amazing like always and so is the coloring. The way the orange of her fur darkens at the gloves is beautiful. The effect seems asymmetrical at her legs, could be just the lighting, but I think it gives her a bit more of a natural look. Also - dat tail!
The pose you set her in goes so well with the oh so elegant and dignified fox archetype and to make that look natural must be hell of a lot of work.
Finaly, her clothes. Others have already touched on that and I'll say it again, beautiful. The cloth physics are just - wow! And the style in general - well it seems rather simple, but not in a bad way. It's a stark contrast to Laetu Baor, Lap of Luxury or Itzel for expample, but it fits. Even though much more simple, she's still got the usual jewelry, you seem to like to put on your gals and guys. Rings, bracelets, anklets, earrings, oh, and I adore her necklace. The shoes I find surprisingly modern looking, but still plain enough to fit the setting.
Whew, that's quite a comment... Sorry, when I start I just can't stop... I had planned to comment on quite a lot of your older works I hadn't found the time to do yet, but after rereading this one... Well I don't want to overdo it.
If you don't mind me asking - did I grasp it right - the character and probably her chair are 3d rendered and the rest is digitaly painted? Oh and are the markings around her eyes your idea or that of the commissioner? They're quite unusual.

Not at all. :) So, the way I typically work is summed up here (warning, slightly NSFW): https://www.deviantart.com/bjpentec.....step-499307589
You can also see an example here: https://www.deviantart.com/bjpentec.....-Map-372764854
Though, sometimes, I prefer to stay entirely in Photoshop and that process looks like this: https://www.deviantart.com/bjpentec.....Step-651730633
For this piece in particular, the whole scene was rendered but all the detailing you see was painted in Photoshop. So all her fur, the clothes, her hair, the jewelry, the foliage, and all the little bits n bobs and nuance were all done in Photoshop. The process of this image is pretty much identical to the first example I posted except that I didn't render in Zbrush, I rendered in Blender.
So to sum up: I sculpt my models, I render them, I do all the detailing in Photoshop. Make sense?

Well, thanks for clearing that up! While I myself certainly am not the artsy kinda guy, I always find it interesting, how such things are done. Really impressive to be able to work with both...
Oh and on the markings - looking again through your folders, I noticed, you do that on many of your characters. Interesting

i perfectly apprehend your obsession with, more / less, producing Life with your very own hands, billie-jean
as i have my own obsessions ... that i only wish to share with the world, so the world may join me in my Marvel

i hope this commissioner paid you handsomely.
nothing less than $1,500(?).
(p.s. for everyone else — i found The Little Fucker
´only took me, like, 13 minutes or so, too)

Heh. I wish. XD Alas, I don't think most people could afford that.
you are deserving of clientele who can afford to drop at least that much
but it goes back to what you, a few months back, told me about [the priorities of this website]
[this website] seriously needs to reconsider what it front•pages; not to say, get rid of all the smut ..... but, you know, also, shine spotlight on artists like you
even to this day, really, i can't really think of anyone around who consistently compares to you

Aye
Well..
..As I can personally attest: do double•check (and even triple• and sextuple•check) yourself
just to ensure your usual high quality output continues being met

I don't think overconfidence is ever going to happen with me. I either hate most of my own work or I'm ambivalent towards it. I know that's completely irrational and there are moments when I can see what others see in my work but for the most part, I'll never be satisfied. I think that's a part of what drives me to keep improving. It's kind of a double-edged sword but it works, I'd like to think. After all, at one point, this was the pinnacle of my artistic achievement: https://www.deviantart.com/bjpentec.....tress-74134269
but you will need that sword to cut into you, at least some of the time
at 1.5 hours, back in 2008
it is also true, i kinda don't want you to "settle," either
i wanna see, to how far you can push yourself...
...without causing burn•out of course
you're already in the upper echelons, as far as i see it..
..even though you're not working with all of the tools you'd like to have
Thanks. ^___^ Believe me, if I had the money, I would buy ALLL OF THE TOOLS. ALL OF THEM. In the very least, I'd upgrade my computer and snag Vray. Google "Vray renders." Holy cheese balls.
In any case, it's nice chatting with you. I'm off to bed. -flomp-

g'night, madame
i would be in bed..
..but i'm in post-surgery recovery
it was only 4 hours ago when i had been able to sit in my computer chair with a modicum of comfort
i'm on medical leave for a while, suffice it to say
up until now, the discomfort's made it pretty hard for me to sleep like i want to ... i'm hoping that will change, later on this morning
i'm gonna flump myself a bowl of hearty soup, to be accompanied with some chinese-style saltine crackers
(Mmmm mmm good, verily!)

i'm on medical leave for a while, suffice it to say
up until now, the discomfort's made it pretty hard for me to sleep like i want to ... i'm hoping that will change, later on this morning
i'm gonna flump myself a bowl of hearty soup, to be accompanied with some chinese-style saltine crackers
(Mmmm mmm good, verily!)
The amount of detail in this is incredible! She is absolutely gorgeous. I'm amazed at how wonderful you achieve with your art!
Simply stunning. Only thing that comes to my mind is the song "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" by Dr. Hook. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gutSCU4-3Q
I've tapped out on the frog, and by the looks of it, most people also have. But then, you've also made a stunningly arresting picture to distract from the hardness of the frog to find. Also, 75 hours on one picture... good goodness. That is a long time, a lot of love, and it honestly shows. The subject looks so elegant here.
Thanks. ^___^
75hrs is just an estimate. It's hard to say exactly how many hours I spent on it but I know it took continuous work over the course of about a week and a half. I put in around 6 to 12 hrs "ish" a day on it. So 75 seems like a good ballbark answer. Could have been a little more or a little less.

Aaa! This is so beautiful, and the amount of detail is just stunning...!
The frustrations with programs, etc. are understandable, but that sort of thing will no doubt improve as you grow more familiar with them or upgrade. With the amount of time you put in it would certainly be great to be able to streamline things so you could achieve a reliable result of this quality more easily.
Your dedication to quality is impressive. While I can imagine chalking up a certain amount of your effort to exploration or improvement, it certainly can't be sustainable as far as a way to make money! In any case, your commissioners are really lucky to benefit from all of your hard work.

Thanks. And yeah, it's not sustainable which is why this isn't my main source of income. If it was, I'd be in the poorhouse. XC That's one of the reasons I'd love Marvelous Designer, Vray or Octane, and better hard-surface modeling software. Alas, Photoshop and Zbrush will have to do.
Well, I hope you can upgrade at some point. It's always a treat to see your lovely art, and I'd love to see what you could do if it was easier or you could do more of it!
This is incredibly beautiful, I love how open you are about your process as well. I'd love to see you with a copy of Marvelous Designer - it really is shocking how much it outclasses everything else. You don't need a beefy machine to run it either.
Thanks! Very kind of you to say. :)
Some years back, I would get so much hate about my process that I lied about it out of shame. I was accused of cheating, being a fraud, a tryhard, lazy, incompetent, second rate, and so on. All just because I like combining 3D and 2D. I love sculpting. I love painting. I don't understand why so many think I should have to choose one or the other. It makes no sense to me at all. People are free to not like the style. That's fine. But calling it cheating is just silly to me.
As for Marvelous Designer, it's at the top of my WANT list alongside Octane. Dat price tag tho. XC

Probably the fact that so many people work that way now, the secret's out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYbYvImd7Bw
I also think more people are encountering more pure 3d as well - and the quality of 3d art has increased a lot - so it's no longer associated with bad Daz renders.

Heh. Aye. I've seen this one. I love that guy's sense of humor. I cracked up at several points. "The thing I want to just point out..." -massages bridge of nose- "is that we're all gonna die, all of us, really soon." Pffffffffffttt. :P
But yeah. It felt incredibly validating to see that I wasn't just some lone feako using this particular technique. I mean, I love sculpting, I love painting- it just seemed like a natural progression to me.

Can't fav your work enough. This one, and like 98% of your online galleries. You truly are an inspiration in so many ways, the workflow, the character designs, the themes explored and personality expressed. It's a truly special kind of art that always has that very special spot in my mind. It's such a breath of fresh air for the eyes and spirit. Thank you for sharing this
:) Thank you! That's very kind of you to say. I appreciate it.
When you cant tell if its a CG model or hand drawn.
Like...wow, stunning work my matey!

when I was working with cycles it took about 500 samples per pixel to get the fireflies out. The last I was looking, when I was trying to get all of my computers working on a single image at the same time, the suggested technique was to use multiple random seeds - one for each render - and then composite the images together.
Re: the cloth sim, physics simulations are always fucky as hell. Getting what you want out of it is a pain in the ass. I tried doing a fountain once. It didn't work out well. But it was also one of my first project so my units likely weren't standardized/I wasn't scaled appropriately/etc.

Duly noted. As I'm going to have to DL Unity eventually anyway, I intend to try out Octane through Unity. It's free. I just hope my old chugger can handle it. :{ For some reason, I never have problems getting amazeballs renders out of Octane. Like seriously amazing instant renders. The free tier could take months or longer to come out and I'm tried of trying to wring decent renders out of Blender so Octane for Unity or bust!
As for cloth sim, I'm holding out for a Marvelous Designer sale or a REALLY generous patron. Until then, just gonna have to draw it by hand. X3

Unity is really painless to get set up and I think you should try it out!
If you find yourself bored one day you could also look at Luxrender if you're feeling really super adventurous and want tokeep the option open to do a render farm in a garage. It'll perform well on what you have, but you can literally just start throwing trash hardware at it and make this big amalgamation of junk into some hideous render-monster contraption if you decide you want to. It's also $0 to use, but 'free' means it costs in time!

iv said it once and ill say it again this type of art is rare the colours and design are unlike anything i have seen here on FA and it has improved a great deal in just a few years witch is even more amazing.
I actually tried an experiment like this:

I would recommend you ditch Blender for something more industry standard like Maya, then try playing around with Keyshot or the Arnald renderer

When the free Octane tier comes out, I'll be ditching Cycles and going with the Blender/Octane plugin... in theory. Keyshot is kinda hit n miss. Great for products and outdoors stuff but it stumbles really badly sometimes, especially where indoor scenes are concerned. I've rendered some things in it that look fantastic and some come out looking like absolute garbage. Arnold, last I checked, is CPU based and mine runs like molasses. So I'm pretty much in need of a good GPU renderer and my favorite is Octane. If the free tier doesn't seem like it's coming out anytime soon, I'll hit the Unity version.
I see your point, recently I've been running tests with Arnold because it's showing some promising results with Xgen fur, but thats only because I've been running more tests with a full jump to 3D with full on rigged characters. Keyshot is pretty nice for generic renders, but it doesn't really seem to play nice with fibermesh, which is a pity because every time I've tried to get it to work my characters come out looking like chemo patients. Hopefully keyshot will get their shit together on that front in the future, because keyshot can pull off some pretty nice bases for overpaints, I would recommend looking up Mike Thomson, Justin Goby Fields, and Tony Leonard if you would like to learn more about that
Blender's cloth does not work well at all.
There's a public algorithm for preventing cloth tangling available in a whitepaper from Pixar.
They developed it for Monsters Inc and published it online and at SIGGRAPH in 2003. "Pixar untangling" will bring it up in google.
....Blender still has yet to implement it, 15 years later.
It's not even code they'd have to worry about having rights to, it's describing in broad terms how to use a basic floodfill search of the cloth to determine intersections and Do The Right Thing with them.

Wow, yeesh. I had no idea.
It was the strangest thing! I created a plane, placed it in position, set up the collision and cloth modifiers, and when I hit play, the plane turned into a crumpled piece of paper. It was disastrous. I did cloth sim back in Maya when I was in college so I'm not stupid. I know how to do cloth sim. But I couldn't imagine what would cause the cloth to bunch up like that. It was infuriating. I googled various solutions, tried them all, and none worked.
So I just gave up and did it by hand in Photoshop. My computer probably wouldn't be able to run MD even if I could afford it anyway. It's getting on in years. I really need to update but I'm afraid to. :\ Costs, time, migrating, getting used to a new OS that I've heard is pretty much universally despised... ehhhhck. Fuck my life. I should have become a vet tech.

Blender also assumes very strange default equivalents for its time and distance even if you're using "generic" units. I recall at one point I was having difficulty with physics (which didn't frustrate me too much as I was playing rather than trying to accomplish some end result) and then discovered that the physics thought my model was 1/10th or 1/100th the size it would 'realistically' be, and time was flowing at half speed. Which means all the "default" materials like cotton silk and leather are usually wrong.
And like I said, because they aren't implementing Baraff-Witkin untangling, heaven help you if even a single cloth vertex winds up on the wrong side of the model.
At least they have sewing springs though. When I do use cloth for modeling, I just build a giant garment and shrink it to fit. Slowly, so it doesn't whipcrack through the model =P

And I believe yet another froggie sighting. I shall now stop obsessively searching for froggies and just look for them when you produce new work.
Heh. One of my friends calls this "froggie derangement syndrome" wherein one is compelled to obsessively look for the derp froggie.
