I wanted to start advertising my horse paintings at a local race track and tack shop in the hopes of getting some more business so I decided I should paint a famous race horse. I had this wonderful picture in one of my horse books and the caption said 'Secretariat'. "I know that name. It's a famous race horse". I thought to myself. So I painted the picture I saw in the book.
Now here I am all proud a shit walking into the tack shop and asking to speak to the owner of the track. Norm, a very friendly horse breeder and owner of the facility came up and was originally impressed with my painting then he asked, "who is it?" I was devistated.
"It's Secretariat!" I replied.
Norm smiled, shook his head and reached over to some photo cards of famous horses and pulled out a picture of Secretariat for me to see. It was NOTHING like what I had painted. More devistation.
Upon further investigation, I discovered the book had a mis-print and the head I painted was a horse called Capital Assett.
Lesson learned: DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE PAINTING SOMEONE FAMOUS!

lol, well i can only wish my mistakes in life were so beautifull
wow Wook @.@ you always are striking me with your talent @.@, what where the mediums?
Love.
My parents are both horse vets and I grew up on the racetracks around here. Sure do hope you can get some business out there, but with stuff like this, you probably won't have a problem.

Actually this was way back when I was still in highschool, around 28 years ago. :)
Well then, you're certainly putting my high school drawing squiggles to shame with your fancy paintings, aren't you? Now I'm jealous.
Well, judging from your avatar, you must have felt like quite the assett yourself.
All kidding aside, this is a beautiful painting! I've tried using oils myself, and it takes a lot of experience to produce a painting as perfect as this one. You should be proud, and I am certainly impressed.

Thanks for the compliment! Now if I could jsut learn to use watercolors and acrylics. I could never get those to work for me. >:/
Why would you want to use another medium when you excel, and do so well with oils?
It is nice to experiment, and explore of course, which is all I've ever done myself, so I could easily understand that.

I don't have the patience I used to. Oils take forever to work with and dry. If I can't complete something quickly I lose interest and move on. :/
OMG! the painting on this is amazeing it looks so real what horse race wouldn't want this??
[chuckles] Still a gorgious painting. Hope you made a killing on it.

OMG dude! Damn is there like anything artwise you CAN'T do? Geez.
Beautiful, we had an ex-race horse mare that was related to Secretariat. CRAP. But I cannot remember her registered name for the life of me... DoreeBabe is what keeps coming to mind, but Im not sure. It was quite a few years ago, she sadly had to be euthenized at a young age due to severe arthritis from racing. :{ Great horse.. 17 hands, beautiful chestnut.
I had forgotten about it but now that you mention it, I remember Pai's registerred name was 'Whisperred Promise'. The name 'Pai' came from her being so patient with people.
I am sorry for your loss. I held my friend's mare's head in my lap as they were putting her down. She was 25 years old and could no longer stand due to her heart giving out. I had known her for 12 years. It's a hard thing losing such good friends.

The horse also seems surprised it is not Secretariat.
Great work on the various textures. You can almost feel the nose.

*chuckles* - love the little anecdote behind this. *cringes*
A great picture in any case! You definitely have a talent with the old brushes - always nice to see.

Secretariat and Man O' War. Two racing legends...and two horse I love! x.x At the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, they have the actual remains of Man O' War beneath a giant life size statue of him. First time I saw it I got goosebumps! :o
I'm totally a horse gal though, think I told ya before :P So I get all worked up about this sort of thing. Gods I would love to see a Man O' War oil painting from ya. ^_^

Secratariot was laid to rest right here in Oshawa's Windfields Farms. When I was in school I used to visit the farm every week to see the studs in the stud barn and beautiful foals running around in the paddocks. They since stopped visiting hours and have pretty much closed opperation with exception of a few remaining barns. :/
That statue of Man O' War is beautiful!

It is! Visiting the Kentucky Horse Park alone is an amazing experience. They take you out on horseback and show you the different mares, foals, colts, and studs that they have out during that day. When I went I got to see Barbaro before he passed away. I don't know exactly why he was at the farm because I think he lived somewhere else...but they have a really great medical facility for horses out here in Lexington...so that might have been why. He was out in the pasture with boots on, just...sort of listlessly standing there. It was pretty sad...but the tour of the horse farm was still great. Just...if you plan on going, wait until the warmer weather comes D: I went in March, it was COLD!
hehe ... well umm the idea was nice .. but you get an F- for your homework,
i hope you'll get into drawing the right one ... cause it still looks awesome!!

this is absolutely awesome man! Sorry the late too >.> people should ask you to their horse pics, not me!
To have done this in high school is to quite simply put something ahead of me even now after 3 years out.
Lucky for us 'art' is not a race but just something we both enjoy doing. :)

I really love your clean art too, like this beautiful painting <3 You did your best and put your soul in these arts , and I'm admire it... really
it may not be Secretariat but it's extremely beautiful painting of a bay thoroughbred. I used to think Secretariat was a chestnut but then again I could be thinking of "Gem Twist". Thoroughbreds are awesome and fun to ride.
