Most of my oil paintings were done on smooth primed masonite. Since I worked in layers using very little paint per layer, the finished pieces were virtually glass smooth. Later on I started using canvas boards since I found them slightly quicker to dry and gave the paintings a 'proper' painted look and feel. This piece was a smaller 12 by 16 painting.

That's amazing man, how long does it take to finish something like this?
That's going back too far to remember. I had abetter attention span back then so things did not take as long as they do now. This was a small piece so I suspect 3 weekends, maybe 16 to 20 hours total.
The smaller the piece, the more difficult the details. You've done a wonderful work of art here, in what I would consider a short amount of time. It's always a pleasure to see such beautiful artwork.
And people wonder why I say that Arabians are the supermodels of the equine (furry) community :)

Jsut as snobby also. They are beautiful horses but not much between the ears. My last horse (not Tari) was a pure bred Arab mare and she was way too flighty to enjoy. She hated everyone and everything, even other horses. Fortunately I found a good home for her and she seemed to get along with her new owner well.
Well, I guess it all comes down how they were brought up. Ok, there are some cases with animals that are like that by nature, but to my knowledge they are rare.
[chuckles] Agree with you there. Good to hear she's better now.

They do? *sigh* Looks like I have to take one of my books about them to more Cons. If they weren't that heavy (those books I mean).
Very nice work with the painting. I have yet to try oil paints, as I go strictly self taught, not sure if it would be worth the money to invest in the supplies.
Arabians are love. Whats kind of ironic is that I was just discussing with my husband the oter day, that I wanted to find an amazing equine artist to do a painting of my mare. I had to give her up after having her for 13 years due to finances and having a baby ;_; Family had to come first, totally broke my heart. So I was wondering if you do commissions? It may be awhile for me to afford such amazing work, but if I get a some what number to work towards I will definently due so. I LOVE your work.
I have had a few local horse friends ask the same question. Truth is I really don't want to get back into painting, at least not for a while. Painting horses is very specific and if you don't get it jsut right the buyer is not satisfied and you are stuck with a painting of someone's horse no one wants. I would prefer to paint fantasy if I ever got back into that media.
Beautiful horse. I wish I could talk you into drawing a black, and white Rocky mountain horse. They can be so striking. They are all black, but have a pure white mane, and tail. Sometimes they have white socks, but almost never above the knee.
Wow. Your furry art is something, but it never occurred to me that you'd be able to paint "real-"life subjects like that.
o_o
I was glancing over thumbnails and for a minute I thought someone was posting photos from their trip to the ranch again. XD

This is very nice work! I find the background here to be simply gorgeous.
Well I must say you are a VERY talented individual!!!! You are very good on most mediums - paint , computer , sculpting. Is there anything you can not do ???
By the way , very nice painting.

Very beautiful man! You should sell textured prints (canvas look) of these if you don't already. I'd buy this!
that's amazing, have you ever considered painting people's horses? I have a friend who shows her horse and would love art of him, even though he's a big baby
I really like the composition of this one. :) Nice painter style ya got!
I love the colors in this. And the degree of detail is just enough that it makes you "fill in" extra details with your own eyes, like in the trees. I like that, it makes a painting live. Also, for all your horse paintings, you capture something about the gaze / look in their eyes...
perfect as a picture of an Arab. They are pretty and intelligent. This one reminds me of a dapple grey Arab I used to ride named Zodiac. You have an amazing talent for capturing image of animals in your artwork, but I'm sure you must hear that all the time.
Ever thought of painting Lipizzaners, Appaloosas or Fresians?
