Joy smiled quietly, letting her calm, gorgeous eyes play across the dessert landscape and natural beauty that blanketed their summer home. Life was good. She had a wonderful mate, some absolutely precious, healthy children, and a beautiful home. There wasn't anything more that she could think of that she wanted.
The door to the house banged open and then shut, announcing the arrival of her two youngest pups she had sent out to play. So much for piece and quiet, Joy wondered, briefly, if she was about to lose the 'healthy' part of having precious and healthy children...
"Mooooom...my tummy hurts..." The pudgy coyote whimpered quietly, meandering into the kitchen with both his paws wrapped protectively around his stomach. Moments later, Calamity padded in after him, ears down, eyes lowered and a sheepish expression plagued over his face. Joy knew immediately something was up.
"And just WHY does your stomach hurt, Chaos?" She asked pointedly, but had her eyes directed towards Calamity- who meekly pulled a sign post from behind his back and held it up for her to read.
[The idiot ate a scorpion.]
The female coyote's eyes widened and she glanced at her son, who stood there looking both miserable and guilty at the same time. She gave a tired sigh and closed her eyes, reaching a paw up to rub quietly across the bridge of her nose.
"Chaos. Did you eat a scorpion?" She asked quietly, already positive of the answer. The smaller coyote nodded his head.
"...Why?" She asked, immediately regretting the word as it slipped past her tongue.
"Calamity fed it to me!" He whined. She glanced ruefully at her older son, who shrugged his shoulders sheepishly, and flipped the sign post he was holding around.
[I have successfully illustrated the dangers of eating scorpions to Chaos.] Joy gave another dizzying sigh. It was a typical Tuesday.
"I am both equally terrified and impressed that you managed to get your little brother to consume a venomous creature. Get in the car boys." She muttered while the two puppies grumbled and wandered out of the kitchen. Joy gave a soft sigh and walked towards the phone sitting silently on the kitchen table. Lifting up the receiver, her fingers punched in three numbers by heart.
"Hello, 9-1-1 emergency?"
"Hi Berenice. It's me again. Chaos this time."
"Oh, dear. What's happened now, will I need to alert the burn ward?"
"Poison control. He ate a scorpion. "
"...are you ...POSITIVE you didn't drop him on his head when he was little?"
"Calamity fed it to him."
"That...doesn't answer my question."
"No, I suppose it doesn't. Anyway, we'll be there in about ten minutes."
"Ok honey, we'll get your room ready, see you soon. "
