You may have heard about Toys 'R' Us going under in the United States, England, and other countries. It's been all over the news lately. If that ain't bad enough, Charles Lazarus, the founder of Toys R Us, just passed away recently at age 94 for an extra nugget of irony on top.
I can't say I grew up with Toys R Us, as they weren't really in my home town until the very late eighties/ early nineties, (I was more of a "Children's Palace" kid ) but as a toy fan and collector, it has been an institution for me for a long time.
On the bright side, it looks like TRU may survive in Canada even if it survives nowhere else, and plans are in the works for Kay-Bee toys to make a comeback, possibly as early as the end of this year.

It's called Amazon, sadly.
No, seriously, that's literally what it'll be. No walking through isles, no picking up, turning, pressing buttons and exploring. Just scrolling through static, 2D images on an internet browser. :/

Actually, it’s because toys are becoming more of a luxury because of the price increase
Actually the three corporations that bought toys r us, left half of the debt with toys r us. Forcing the toy company to pay 400 million a year anyway. The three that bought toys r us wanted to put it down in their own greedy money games. "We" are the toys of the rich now.
Yeah, one of those companies has a history of doing that with several companies. Buy them, exploit them, load the debt onto them, repeat.
I was a kid when it existed and still didn't know what it was like to go to a Toys 'R' Us.

we still have Toys R Us here, since they are owned by another comanpy in scandinavia.
Such a shame.....They were next to CompUSA on my favorite places as a kid.
Honestly Toys R' Us hasn't been that great since the early 2000's anyhow.
Largely that's the responsibility of the ones who bought it in 2008. The store was making a decent revenue, but it was all going to service the purchase debt.
It also didn't help that a lot of toy manufacturers stopped making interesting original properties for younger and older collectors.
McFarlane toys for example kinda went down the tubes after about 2006. Most other toy makers doing cool stuff beyond that point you could find at an FYE or similar as well. Sometimes NOT at a TRU.

The CEO and founder of MGA Entertainment is looking to save about 400 of the 700 stores and keep what he can of TRU alive.
my next door Toys 'r' us is still open. no word yet how or when US and UK shutting down their stores will affect the stores in here.
I remember when I was young, I loved going to the Toys-R-Us stores. They were always so big and filled with a HUGE variety of toys. Lately, though, they'd been pretty lacking in their selection. Shelves were barely stocked and most of what was there was barely worth looking at, as if TRU had become the "discarded dregs heap" of what the other stores stocked.
It really is sad to see how all this online marketing can kill not just jobs for those working in the store, but the experience of going in as a kid and exploring a veritable wonderland of toys, collectibles and assorted other play things. It's sad to think that no kids today will experience the fun that I experienced every time I walked into a Toys-R-Us 20 years ago.
Then again, what does any kid today care, they have their iPads and their parent's credit card linked to it.
Ignorance is bliss.

It looks like Mr Toys might outlast them but we lost a lot of toy store locations in general.
*nods* true, I have my local Target and such but their toy range is lack-luster at times
The thing is so many kids don’t even play with toys either anymore.

I was an Xmas temp at Toys R Us once, I was positioned in multimedia where I was selling videogames and game consoles. There was a lot of demand for the then Nintendo Wii but we were nearly always out of stock. I managed to get a few ps2 bundles sold though. The manager was a miserable bastard as was one of the checkout ladies, but I did at least amuse myself with watching kids fail at playing Guitar Hero on the display consoles because they didn't understand how the game worked :P
It is indeed sad. Toys R Us wasn't local to where I lived, the closest was in the Capital which isn't very far, but when I was little I had to wait for special occassions to go there until I was old enough to take a train on my own. But the store was always an awesome place to go even if I don't intend to buy anything there.
It going away is just as depressing as Woolworths shutting down years ago, which was my local store growing up.

See I went to Toys R Us as a kid, but maybe its was due to my income bracket at the time or whatever, but I never knew it as a cultural landmark of living in the US like some people have put upon it like I am hearing in the news or from personal stories. Maybe it was because I became the guy who did online shopping before online shopping was a big thing to, but I never got this attachment to it growing up. The few times I went as a kid I liked the displays and liked checking out the section of wrestling toys, but by the time I was 12 I kinda just saw it as super over priced and not carrying most of what I wanted. Which at that point was transformers (beast wars), Warhammer 40K, and Magic the Gathering.
For me it was the lost of Toys by Roy a big hobby and toy shop in Wichita KS.
you city folk. I've never even SEEN one! where I'm at, we got generic department stores, instead, and they all absorbed or died. i bet only a few of you are old enough to have heard of Murphy's Mart!
i'd blame walmart and iot's ilk, but it's just as much the death of good paying manufacturing union jobs leaving a struggle to survive on part time multiple jobs for many folks....Well, maybe something like that will come back again when the vultures are out of power...the new business might even be called "Toys R Us" - cuz, why not?
Wally world and Amazon didn't kill them, investment bankers did the deed back in 2005 I think it was. They took out a 5 billion loan - which they saddled on toy's are no longer us and collected profits instead of paying off the loan. Like a kid (of any age) maxing out a credit card and only paying the minimums, they've been paying 400 million a year and still owe the 5 billion ...
As for manufacturing, it all says made in China on it ...

Sadder still is that they put themselves out of business as part of a really stupid and risky buyout that everyone knew was a bad idea. Before that, the company was profitable.
So, yeah... don't go blaming Amazon. It was ego killed the beast.

I worked at the local Toys when it first started up. I mean I helped set up the aisles and stock the shelves after we built them. Lasted from October to just into Jan where they didn't fire me they "didn't pick up my option". That was after telling me I was a good worker, reliable, good with the customers, kept things hopping when unloading a truck. Truth, I knew I wasn't there for the long run. I survived to first purge from 40 to 20 employees, but they wouldn't teach me the cash register, actually pulling me out of the lesson.
I got a lot of my Paw Patrol collection there, but they just don't seem to be getting any new stock or products, not even over Christmas.
So even living in Canada and keeping our stores, it still doesn't feel like a win.

Not many people I feel "do" toys anymore, not on the scale they used to be, video games are the "in" thing thus far.
Then it'll be downloaded games on computers on directly on consoles so disks will disappear. Hell I even miss the little book you got in old games that would tell you about characters, backstory, weapons. :( Time moves forward and those who see the changes cry over that is gone.
Goodbye Toys R Us thank you for the memories.

I thought KB Toys went under years ago; it still exists? TRU ceased to be a true toy store when they added the baby stuff and the educational section. Anyone remember that one contest where a couple lucky kids got to go hog wild picking out everything they wanted? I once worked part time at a TRU years ago during the Christmas season, that was really wild! I remember getting all my Transformer toys from there, that was a real treat! RIP Toys R Us.
Well with more and more people shopping online it's very hard for brick and mortar store to make it anymore.
I think I was in TRU about four times. I was more into the Hobby shops that are also fading away.... In my area five family owned hobby shops have closed that I know of in the last six yeas. It's now a fifty plus mile drive and over an hour ferry ride just to get to the last hobby shop that is worth going to.

Honestly I never was a Toys R Us kid. Though when I moved to New York to live with my boyfriend in 2009 it wasn't till 2011 that he took me to a Toys R Us. All we really did was walk around and look at things. Never really bought anything. That was the only time we went though.
When I was a kid I always loved going to Toys R Us, it was the thing to do when I had an allowance. :) I bought so many Star Trek action figures there... I imagine RC and I would've gotten along well, LOL.
Really? Kay-Bee toys may come back? I remember them. I used to go there to find items that I couldn't find anywhere else. It would be great if they do come back. We really need more brick and mortar stores (and fewer Wal-Marts).

I did some work at my local Toys R Us over Christmas when I was between jobs. I was so upset when I heard it was closing because I know some of the staff. I wanted to cheer them up so I went in with a box of biscuits one day.
They appreciated the gesture, I will miss that place. I bought a lot of my toys there and I always returned just to have a look about, even if I never bought anything. My last purchase was a Legacy Black Dragon Zord to go with my Legacy Megazord. I will miss everything about it.

I have two memories attached to Toys R Us:
1.) Buying Abadox for the NES, proceeding to use the invincibility code and beating it in like an hour.
2.) The various distribution events for legendary pokemon Nintendo would hold there. I've got a special (inactive) $5 gift card with Lugia and Ho-Oh from the HG/SS event.

A great lose to the world indeed. The last TRUE toy store gone forever from the world.
why does she look michelle from once upon a forest?,still cute
It does rather suck. When I was a kid, Toys R Us and Radio Shack, right next door to each other, were two of my favorite stores. Radio Shack (and all the others in town) closed years ago, and now we're losing Toys R Us. I saw a couple of news videos this morning describing how the chain was bought by venture capitalists who borrowed billions of dollars to buy it, and then raked in the money while dumping the loan debt on Toys R Us so that the stores were paying $400M a year just to cover the interest on the loan and could do nothing to improve and maintain their stores so people actually liked going there. It's yet another big company that Mitt Romney's capital investment firm has bought and run out of business, making huge profits while tens of thousands lose their jobs. (Others were involved, too.)
I was in my thirties before I saw my first Toys "Я" Us. It was in Waterford, Connecticut, and Heaven help the man who went in there without a female escort -- or a kid in tow. Talk about a Bum's Rush! They would hustle you out the front door like they just saw your mug on a wanted poster.
Bwahahahahahaha! that made me laugh, and ya can always do another that can be her discovering the website called "Big Bad Toy store" cause ya know she'd super geek out at that, lmao

Maybe not. Maybe not. If you folks ever get up North to Canada, there's about ten of the stores still in business around the Toronto area alone.
