Aura of the Storm - Chapter 20: Scouting the Plains
Four days had passed since news of Emberflame leaving Clearspring for an unspecified amount of time. While the crew of team Aura Storm had apparently settled off into their own individual activities, another Pokemon pair was doing their best to figure out how to flesh out the actions of their time altogether.
Legion and Oleander had awoken that particular morning, having been grateful to Auron and his group for posting their inn fee during their stay of course, and having been around the town for almost a week, their opinions only grew more and more impressed. The chimera in particular was especially surprised by the number of Pokemon coming and going from the town.
“S-so uhm..” Olly perked up, following the Silvally into the town’s market for the day. “What do you think we’ll get up to today? G-given the fact that Ember’s not here still.. Auron and his group are off doing Arceus knows what.. A-and there hasn’t been any sign of those outlaws either..”
The chimera idly shook his head. “I’m certain something will draw our attention at some point or another, Olly.” he replied, giving his companion a light smile. “Though I must admit, the monotony of these past, calm few days has been somewhat alleviating from my usual fare of.. Less-than-stellar encounters with other wild Pokemon. Most seem almost anxious for a fight.”
The pair lumbered along, inspecting the berries and other items up for sale in the market, window-shopping for the most part as they still lacked a means of earning their own funds. Though Legion had tussled with the idea of perhaps working the Den as a predator partner for those interested in his unique physiology.
“...So what do you think we should do?” A feminine voice, with just a bit of rasp, could be overhead nearby.
“I dunno, Clara. I get that it’s an important mission, but going there with just the two of us? It’s… a serious risk.”
Not too far from where the two were, they could see a rather large Flygon, leaning down her head a bit to talk to a familiar sight: the brown-colored Lucario and owner of the Silver Wing Spa and Salon, they recalled, from the tour Auron and his team prior to having Talani join their group had shown them around to, only briefly meeting him. Blaine, the name came to Legion’s thoughts.
“Right…” Clara closed her eyes, thinking intently. “...I really dunno what our best option is. Everyone else is out on missions and there’s no time to ask other teams for aid. No guessing how long we’ll have to try and rescue that Sentret…”
“Yeah… I wish I knew how he got himself lost in Moonshadow Plains…” Blaine groaned softly. “Well, we might have no choice. I just hope we’re prepared.”
Olly blinked, glancing to the chimera. “A-are you thinking about helping them..? I seem to remember Auron mentioning something about that place.. I-I think it was where that Zoroark outlaw he noted defeated a fully-fledged rescue team..?”
Legion nodded. “If there’s trouble in such a place, then it must be a difficult task.. I believe they could use our assistance.” he sighed softly, returning the glance. “I know you’re not one for battle, but I do believe your abilities would be most helpful.”
The Skuntank quivered slightly, but soon nodded. “Alright.. L-let’s see what we can do.” he agreed, the two lumbering forward, approaching the pair. “E-excuse us, uhm.. Y-you’re that Lucario we saw at the Spa our first day here, right?”
“Huh?” Blaine turned around as he heard Olly speak. “...Oh! Oleander, Legion… ah, hello there. Yes, I am he; I don’t know of any other brown-furred Lucario around here, heh. ...Ah, you overheard what we were talking about, didn’t you…?”
“Y-yeah, and ah. We’d like to help if we’re able.” the skunk nodded, Legion sauntering a bit closer, glancing to the Flygon, before eyeing the chococario.
“If the dungeon is as dangerous as you say, then my abilities will be most useful, of that I’m certain. And while my companion is not wont for fighting.. He can hold his own and provide defensive cover in case a retreat is needed.” the chimera explained. “I remember you were called Blaine. But who is your companion here?”
Clara spoke up before Blaine could. “Clara! Clara Draconis, heh. I’m one of his teammates. So you’re willing to help us? That’s great! Moonshadow Plains is a pretty rough dungeon; even with ‘Supercario’ here, so your help would be seriously appreciated. ...So what exactly are you, Legion? You kinda look like Arceus got really drunk and just sorta threw a bunch of other Pokemon together and said ‘Yup, that’s good.’”
“I’ll just pretend that’s a compliment and leave it at that..” the chimera’s eyes rolled. “My kind are called Silvally. A synthetic, and artificial creation of human scientists part of a group called the Aether Foundation, localized in the Alola region. You’re not far off about the Arceus comment. My kind were created to mimic it’s Multityping abilities, through the use of Memory Drives.”
He raised himself up a bit, tapping the harness that adorned his neck down to his midsection and around his back. “I’ll explain about this shortly, but the original premise of the project was the culmination of the RKS System, which is how my kind utilize type-changing. I however, was part of a larger, broader idea conceived by one of Aether’s top scientists, project ‘Perfect RKS’.” he noted.
Olly spoke up. “S-suffice it to say, the project was designed so that a Silvally could have access to every type all at once with a single unit.. T-that harness there is the Omni-Memory Core. The fruits of their research.. It’s a long backstory, but needless to say science didn’t exactly come out brilliantly on this one.. Y-yet it’s enabled Legion to change his type through sheer will since then, e-even dual-typing!” he smiled lightly.
“...So you’re tellin’ me that humans basically made you… and you’re pretty much Arceus Jr.? ...I dig it! That’s pretty cool!” The Flygon grinned brightly at that, giving Legion as much of a thumbs-up as she could. “Now I’m real glad you’re willing to help out.”
Blaine just sighed. “Yes, before you ask, she is always that energetic. And regarding your story, I can’t say I’m surprised. Humans don’t know when to leave well enough alone. Regardless, thank you. Our rescue target is fairly far into Moonshadow Plains, a Sentret. I’ll admit that I don’t know much about that Dungeon, or what we’ll be encountering. You’ll gladly be paid part of the reward for your assistance.”
“I can only say that, despite their intentions, I’m.. Rather glad that I do exist here and now.” the chimera chuckled. “Though this harness is fused to my fur, it’s actually not as obstructive as you may think. And as far as this dungeon goes..” he raised one of his claws, clicking it slightly, the jeweled gem on the harness’ centerpiece shimmering, as did the top part of Legion’s helmet, shifting into a multitude of colors, representing each type. “I will always have the advantage.”
“He’s not kidding about that, eheh..” Olly blushed softly with a purr. “Legion’s just.. R-really powerful. As for me, I-I’m more the type to hang back and let the others do the fighting, and support as needed.” the skun’s tail flicked.
Clara grinned at that, patting the Skuntank’s shoulder. “No sweat. We don’t really have much in the way of ‘support’ teammates in our team, so it’ll be nice having one watching our backs for once. You just hang back and leave the fightin’ to us. So, chococario, you’re in charge. We good to go?”
Blaine nodded, folding his arms. “I think so. I hope you two don’t mind if I’m making the calls during the mission.”
“If you’re to be heading up this objective, then I will yield to your judgement.” the Silvally noted, setting his claw down, normalizing the color of his helm and gem. “Merely point out a target you wish taken down, and it will be done.”
“A-and if you need long-range attacks.. I-I’ve got all special attacks that hit from a distance so.. T-there’s that.” the Skuntank sheepishly smiled. “What uh.. W-what primary types are even in this place anyway..?”
Blaine shook his head slightly. “I’m not totally sure. The brief that Chief gave us warned us to be on the lookout for Dark types but I doubt that’s the only type there. We’ll just have to keep our eyes open when we get there. For now, unless you two need some more supplies, I’d say we should get going.”
Legion gave Olly a glance and nod, the large mephit mon nodding in return, shifting his tail up off his back, giving it a shake, dropping a simple carrying bag from its fluff. “W-we keep a modest amount of berries in there, a-and we’ve also got a few Revivers as well.” he noted, nosing it open, showing the pair.. Quite a collection of useful things indeed, status-curing, status-inflicting.. The whole nine yards, it appeared.
“Courtesy mostly of Auron and his team for teaching us about these different seeds and what they do.” Legion added as the skunk tucked the bag back into the thick fluff of his tail, resting it along his back once more. “So yes, I’d say we’re prepared enough.”
“Then I’d say we’re prepared. All right, that Sentret won’t save themselves and time’s critical. Let’s move out!” With that, Blaine turned, starting to lead the group out of town.
“One question, though.” Legion interjected as he followed. “Where’s this dungeon located, exactly?”
“North of a place that most Pokemon don’t go… Sendoff Spring. The fourth lake of Sinnoh.” ’Though, thankfully,’ the Lucario thought, ’Not very far north. Further south than Sanctuary, at least.’
“I-I remember that place.” Olly piped up. “It’s said to contain Turnback Cave.. Which has a way leading into the Distortion World where Giratina resides..” the skuntank shivered softly. “I-in mine and Legion’s travels, we heard about some of the Sinnohian lore surrounding its legends and mythos..”
“Indeed. I found them to be very fascinating tales, myself.” the chimera noted with a slightly-chipper tone, it might be said he was a mythos enthusiast, even. “Perhaps I’ll rummage around the area again sometime.. But first, the matter of the small scout mon.”
“It’s certainly interesting, I’ll give you that,” Blaine said as he continued on the north exit of town. “I’ve always wondered how much of those stories were fact, though… regardless, you’re right. We need to hurry.”
Clara nodded, following quickly behind Blaine.
* * *
The group’s travel took quite some time, having to evade sight from the people living among Pastoria City, and even the trainers on the way past the Valor Lakefront, before finally angling off onto an almost-hidden path, making way to the Sendoff Spring.
“We should be getting close now.. Is there any sight that sticks out to you, Blaine?” Legion queried the cario, continuing to clatter and follow suit alongside Olly.
“Nothing besides the fact that I’m having trouble seeing anything with all this fog… that said, the entrance should be close, through the trees north of the Spring. That’s what the dossier said, anyway. Anything stand out to you two, Clara? Oleander?”
“N-nothing that really sticks out.. This fog is thick though, I agree.” the skun huffed softly, perking his nose, sniffing slightly. “Mmh.. I am picking up on several scents somewhere up ahead.. The dungeon entrance has to be right before us.” he remarked, lumbering along with those hefty footsteps of his.
“...Yeah, you’re right. I don’t have good Aura Sense, but even I can sense it… the entrance is right there.” He pointed a paw outward. “...All right. Legion, you and I will be the frontline. Clara, stay in the center area, and Oleander, you stay close to her. We don’t know exactly what we’re up against, so stay vigilant. Let’s go.”
“G-got it.” the mephit nodded, hustling a bit closer to the Flygon as he followed her in, the quartet practically fading into the fog as their vaunted expedition began..
Right off the bat, it was easy to tell that this dungeon wasn’t going to be anything easy whatsoever, the foggy weather persisting even in the dungeon’s winding, changing corridors. “Hmmph.. This’ll prove problematic..” Legion noted. “I can barely see several feet in front of me. It’s going to make fighting a bit more concise as well.. Aside from these larger rooms, it’ll be hard to tell what’s closeby. I also imagine accuracy will be an issue..”
“Yeah, I’d say so. I might be able to clear some of the fog temporarily with Blaze Kick, but… High Jump Kick is out of the question in foggy areas. I don’t need to hurt myself with that. I really don’t have much besides that to help us find our way.”
“And with this fog, I can’t see much even if I try to get above it,” Clara chimed in. “Not much choice but to just keep going forward.”
“I-if I had Defog, I might be of some help.. S-sadly I don’t.” Olly whined, sticking close to the Flygon as they wandered through the corridors. “I just hope it thins out as we get deeper, I don’t like walking into the unknown..”
“None of my techniques will be of any help in clearing it out either. I’ll also be refraining from using Surf. I don’t wish to cause unnecessary ‘friendly fire’ as it’s known..” the chimera somberly spoke, keeping his gaze forward, adjusting his typing accordingly to Fairy. “My Multi-Attack should be enough for any threat that gets too close.”
“We’ll make this work somehow. Just watch each other’s backs and we’ll get through this just fine. I think I see the stairs already.”
“How far did that report say the Sentret had gotten, anyway?” the synth-mon pried. “I can’t begin to fathom it would last very well in conditions like this..”
“...Moonshadow Plains Hill, second floor. We’ve got a bit of a trek ahead of us.” Blaine sighed softly. He just hoped they’d make it in time.
Fortunately, it seemed the first floor of the dungeon would be relatively tame, though the group did encounter at least a few different Pokemon, in particular, a Nuzleaf, Scyther, and a Sandslash, illustrating right then what primary types seemed to be skulking about. Legion would adjust and adapt accordingly to each one all the same.
“Alright.. So we can tack on Ground and Bug types on that list of primary typings that inhabit this dungeon.. That’s going to make this a bit interesting.” he huffed, brushing a few bullet seeds from his neck.
“Honestly, I’d have been surprised if it wasn’t going to be,” Blaine said, stepping away from a Scyther he’d Blaze Kicked. “At the least, we’re probably going the right way if we’re getting this kind of resistance. How’s everyone holding up so far?”
“It’s nothing I can’t handle yet.” the chimera noted, glancing off to Olly, who apparently caught the short end of a slash attack, shivering from the light pain. “Tch.. Singling out the least-defended target.. How low can some of them get?”
“I-I’ll be alright, really.” Olly nodded, chomping down an Oran, resurging his strength. “Mmmph.. Just caught me a little off-guard, t-that’s all. I’m good to keep going.” he assured the rest, glancing off to the side. “Look, there’s the first set of stairs!”
“They seem to be especially pragmatic here,” Blaine noted. “Maybe due to the nature of the dungeon. I’m no stranger to that sort of thing… try to check your blind spots often.”
Clara nodded. “If you want, Olly, you can stick to the middle of the group, I’ll bring up the rear so I can keep an eye on ya.”
“I think that’d be a g-good idea, thanks Clara.” the skun accepted, shuffling up in the group order, following the cario and Legion up the stairs to the second floor.
Right as they entered, a shout erupted, coming in fast from the side came a pair of swift Sneasel. “A-ahhh!!” Olly cried, reflexively aiming his tail, the tip foaming with sludgy toxin, splattering out a pair of Sludge Bombs, smacking the dark/ice duo square in the faces, splotching them into a yelp and hasty retreat, the skun shivering slightly. “Hnnn.. B-bastards..”
Blaine gave Oleander a pat on the shoulder, before heading towards the stairs. “Well done.”
Clara gave the Skuntank a bright smile. “Nice work. You fight pretty well for a guy who doesn’t like fighting.”
“S-Skuuhhhnn..” he lightly purred, faintly smiling back. “I-I just don’t take well to being startled.. I-it’s in the skunky genes, y’know?~” he blushed lightly. “S-seriously though.. Jerks.”
“Either way, that was nicely done indeed.” Legion noted, following the cario further onwards. “I only pray you don’t have to endure more of those instances, I know battles aren’t your strong suit.”
Blaine smiled over his shoulder at that. “Don’t worry. That’s what we’re here for. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy a good fight… probably the Fighting-type thing.”
“E-even when I was under ownership of a trainer, he understood I didn’t like to fight very often. O-only when we were directly challenged to battle by other trainers.” the skunk noted. “Huuu.. I sometimes think back to those days with him.. He was so warm and kind, really.” his purrs sounded more content, if anything.
“Hhf… nice to know some humans aren’t scumbags, I suppose…” Blaine sighed softly before heading up the stairs.
Clara exhaled softly before turning to Oleander. “Don’t mind that. His Trainer before he got to town was… much less kind than yours, from what Ampere told me.”
“O-oh..” the skunk’s expression turned to a slight frown. “Egh.. Sorry if I brought up unpleasant memories then..” he twitched his tail.
“I doubt it’s any issue, to be fair.” Legion noted, sauntering onwards, stopping short of a large room on the third floor. “..I can feel the presence of many items.. Is this where one of those ‘Monster Houses’ I’ve heard from Auron about might be? I didn’t expect it so soon..”
“Hohhh.. I-I’m not comfortable going into this.” Olly whined softly. “Can’t we just sidle around it..?”
“If there’s another route, we can. I’d rather not fight a Monster House this early if we can avoid it, honestly; we need to conserve as much stamina as we can for this,” Blaine said. “Let’s turn back and find another route through this floor.”
“Agreed. No sense needlessly wasting valuable energy, even if we have the supplies for it. Time remains a factor, there’s no telling what sort of dangers lurk further up, and what might befall that Sentret if we’re not swift enough.” Legion concurred, about-facing to saunter and search for another route.
“Kyuu.. Large groups of Pokemon just unnerve me in general.. That’s another factor.” the skun added, shuffling his bulky frame to double back as well.
Clara nodded, turning and following… before a loud sound rang through the floor. “...Uh, guys? What was that…?”
Blaine lowered himself into a readied stance. “...Oh no.” In almost an instant, all the walls of the dungeon’s floor crumbled, leaving the group in one large room… which was promptly swarmed with Pokemon. “Gah! Who the hell used a One-Room Orb?! Everyone, head towards the stairs, NOW!”
“O-one room..?!” Olly squeaked out, and with good reason, as the Monster House triggered in full! Heavy-set mons dropping from above, the likes of Heracross, Scizor, Shiftry, Graveler, and various others of the 3 primary types dropped, all gunning for the group. “A-ah nuts..!” the skunk hurried to lumber for the stairs.
“Tch, if this isn’t the most typical, and pardon my language but.. Absolute bullshit thing to happen thus far!” Legion grunted, adjusting his typing to Steel/Flying. A solid midground defensive typing as he hastened with the skuntank, being set upon by a Brave Birding Honchkrow. “Geh..! Of course they’d be here too..!”
“Oh, damn it, we don’t have time for this. Legion, I don’t know what type you have right now but make Flying one of them if you haven’t already. Clara, clear the room out!” Blaine grit his teeth, dashing over to Olly and hoisting the large skunk onto his shoulders with surprising strength, jumping into the air.
“You got it! Suck Earthquake, assholes!” With a roar, the Flygon stomped the ground, sending a massive shockwave through the large room.
“Eeeehhh!!” Olly whined as he was held up, shocked, by the chococario, Legion levitating as he already had the typing in mind, watching as a good chunk of the other mons took heavy damage, some of them flat-out fainting. But of course the Honchkrow was immune, and it also didn’t help that among their number was a Claydol.
“Tch.. That one there has Levitate, Earthquake won’t do anything to it!” Legion pointed out, evading an Ice Beam blasting from the psychic/ground mon. “Clara, watch that thing! I’d rather not have frozen Flygon on my claws!” he called out
“I’ll get ‘em outta the way. Just get moving!” Clara slid underneath another Ice Beam, before whirling her large body around, her tail glowing a bright teal before she slammed it into the Claydol, launching it all the way to the other side of the room. “Take that!”
Blaine set Olly down, before igniting his feet, staring down one of the Honchkrow, before wiping a paw underneath his nose, and gesturing to the bird in a ‘bring it’ manner.
The Big Boss avian glared the cario down, body shimmering aglow as it charged in low for another Brave Bird attack. In the interim, Olly continued his hustle to the stairs, getting roadblocked by a nimble Weavile. “G-geh.. Why meee!” he cringed, getting slugged with a frosty Ice Punch. “Kuhh..! Y-you..!” he grunted, glaring it down, before embers flared around his maw, gaping his jowls, and blasting the wide-eyed attacker with a point-blank Flamethrower. “FRAHH!!”
Legion glanced over, just in time to see the Weav get torched, wincing. “Oooh, that’s going to leave a mark..” he noted, slashing down the still-standing Scizor with a fire-adjusted Multi-Attack, searing and knocking it down. “You get out of here!”
Blaine watched intently as the ‘krow came in quickly, exhaling slowly… before twisting his body, a flurry of flame-wreathed kicks launched at Bullet Punch’s speed meeting the incoming attack. “Hyah!”
Clara hurried over towards the stairs, towards Olly. “You alright, big guy? C’mon, you two, let’s get going!”
“J-just a bit cold is all.” the mephit grunted, panting softly as he hastened after the Flygon. “L-Legion let’s go!” he called out to the chimera.
“I’m coming, just one more..!” he smacked down a Megahorning Heracross with a pure flying Multi Attack. “There.. Stay down you. Hmph..!” he grunted, dashing toward the stairs, glancing to see Blaine smack the squawking krow hard, the Honch corkscrewing and smattering into the ground in a heavy skid.
“Hhf… and that’s that. Let’s move.” Blaine spat on the ground before hurrying over towards the others, taking the time to snatch some of the items on his way. “Might as well since we had to fight all that anyway…”
Not a bad haul gained overall, a few gummies, surprisingly, as well as a pair of Doom Seeds. But also among them was a Trawl Orb. Very useful indeed, as they draw all items on a dungeon floor to the user.
“Hff.. I-I hope that’s the only time we have to deal with that..” Olly whined, shaking a bit of frost from his face. “Nnhh.. That wasn’t pleasant at all..”
“You can say that again…” Blaine cracked his neck slightly, stretching his legs. “Monster Houses are always a pain, but I’ve never been in one that took up a whole floor. That was… incredibly unpleasant. Nice work on that Earthquake, Clara.”
“Anytime, Blaine. Nice work dodging it with Olly on your shoulders, too.”
“That brings up another question..” Legion noted. “Just how strong are you? Olly is considerably weighted.. I believe he mentioned it was some odd-ends of 500 pounds..” the skun nodded, confirming that assessment. “Quite impressive.”
“Strong enough, haha.” Blaine grinned at that, before throwing a kick to the air. “I’ve always had more power in my lower body than my upper. It’s why most all my attacks are kick-based.” As the group continued to walk, the Lucario continued. “I got confirmation recently, even; my father was indeed a Blaziken; a ‘top grade’ one, as the humans say.”
“W-wow..” Olly quivered and purred softly. “T-that’s a lot of power.. Still. A-a little warning next time..?” he whined. “That was unnerving, e-even if it was to help me avoid taking heavy damage.” he noted, plodding onwards. “Phwahh.. Four floors gone, just.. Nine more and then two after that..?”
“Accurate assessment.” the chimera nodded. “If we do run into another Monster House, Olly.. Give us some ‘cover’, alright?”
The Skuntank’s ears perked, nodding. “Gotcha. T-that should’ve been something I did back there but.. Heat of the moment.”
“It’s fine. I’ll be sure to warn you next time,” Blaine said. “...And what do you mean by ‘cover’, Legion?”
Clara tilted her head in slight confusion at that. “I’m curious, too.”
“O-oh, by cover he means me using Smokescreen.” Olly perked up. “U-usually its used to blind other Pokemon and make their moves terribly inaccurate, b-but it’s also nice as a cover shroud for quick escapes, or even confusing the foe.” he smiled.
“It’s actually proven a suitable defense tactic. He confuses the lot, and I hammer in the coup de grace, as it were.” the chimera noted.
“I could see that being effective, yes… oh! I just had an idea… Oleander, put this on.” Blaine reached into his bag, pulling out a bandana with a few different designs on them… a sun, a few raindrops, a snow crystal, and a tan wisp. “It’s a Weather Band. If need be, Clara can use Sandstorm to help in that regard, too, and this will prevent it from harming you.”
“O-oh..! Well ah, th-thanks, Blaine.” he shyly nodded, furling his tailtip forward, taking the band. “Erm.. uhh how do I..”
“Here, Olly.” Legion spoke up, helping to affix the band around his neck. “There. A rather perfect fit, if I do say so.” he nodded.
“M-many thanks Legion.” the mephit perked up, giving the chimera, then Blaine a nuzzle. “Prrr..~ Y-you’re too kind, I swear.”
“Thank you, Oleander, but really, I’m just doing my best to help us complete this; I’d rather you not get hurt if I can do anything about it.” Blaine chuckled softly, ruffling the skunk’s fur behind his ears. “C’mon, let’s keep going. We’re doing quite well for this dungeon being so difficult.”
A deeper purr elicited from the Skuntank from the scritchings, Olly only blushed softly, nodding and giving the Lucario a warm lick on the cheek, before pressing onwards, Legion sighing fondly. “He really is that big of a softie, and not just because of his size.” he off-side spoke to Clara. “I couldn’t ask for a better travel companion, even if I had the choice.” he admitted, chuckling.
Clara chuckled as well. “Kinda reminds me of Ampy. Big sweetheart. ...Main difference I can see is that if he’s pushed, Ampere can kick some serious ass. Olly seems like he’s more for flight than fight. Hah, we better not let ‘em leave us behind. C’mon, Arceus Jr. There’s work to be done~”
“Hmph, just try to keep up with me if you’re able..” he paused, trying to devise a clever return nickname. “..Dragonfly.~”
Olly lightly giggled hearing that, humming softly as he plodded behind the brown cario with renewed vigor and mild confidence.
Blaine laughed softly as the group moved on, spirits high despite the battles before. The next two floors went by without much incident, save for a general unease that the foggy conditions caused.
“Floor number six..” Legion tensed up slightly. “Mmmh.. The air on this one feels a bit denser.. We might start running into more aggressive Pokemon from here out.. I can also sense something else.. Something with the ground isn’t right.”
“Might be there’s traps lurking about..” Olly piped up. “Auron did b-briefly mention that some difficult dungeons have traps lacing their corridors the deeper teams go.. H-he mentioned that there’s primarily Sticky Traps here if I recall right..?”
“Indeed.” the chimera nodded. “If we stumble onto such a trap, one of the items we’re carrying could be rendered unusuable.. I remember it mentioned that was how Zane dealt with that rescue team.. Luring them into those traps and gumming up their Reviver Seeds to worthless lumps of gunk. Proceed with caution.” he warned everyone.
“My Mini Reviver Seeds can’t be made Sticky where they are, thankfully, but it’s still good to be cautious. I have all of two Trapbust Orbs with me, and we won’t even really know where they are until they’re triggered, so be careful. ...Shame we don’t have Miles. Those X-Ray Specs of his would be really useful right about now…”
“Oh, the Floatzel that Ampere ate that one night~? Heh, I’ve seen him around town, he’s kinda cute,” Clara said, laughing softly.
“We’ll have to make do, and just be wary.” Legion noted. “Perhaps I should take point, I don’t carry anything on me, Olly’s usually the one who carries all our items.” he suggested.
“P-probably for the best, yeah.. I just hope those are the only traps.. Would hate running into something like a Warp or Sleep trap..” Olly quibbled out.
“Yeah, and we don’t have any Goggle Specs or Trap Scarves, so stay alert. I’ll follow behind you, Legion.” Blaine nodded, folding his arms as he moved behind the Silvally. “Stay alert.”
“Got it.” the chimera agreed, spearheading the group into the western corridor. “Fog’s still quite dense.. Hasn’t lifted even slightly.” he paused mid-thought. “...Hmm.. Wouldn’t a weather move clear this up?” he queried.
“W-well.. I think so..? I’ve only been on one of Sinnoh’s foggy routes a few times.. Usually trainers just use Defog.. But I think things like Sunny Day or Rain Dance work..?” the skunk noted.
“...Well, it might. Clara?”
“On it, boss.” The Flygon dug her feet into the ground for a moment before starting to flap her wings, kicking up sand.
“O-ohhh.” Olly flinched slightly, as Sandstorm took effect. “Hope this doesn’t get in my eyes.. I hate that so much.” he shook his head, Legion opting for pure Rock typing to render himself immune to the damaging effects.
“At least it’s cleared up the fog for now, look.” he pointed out. Sure enough, the group’s sight wasn’t nearly as hampered as it was before. “It’ll make seeing things coming that much easier.”
“Great!” Blaine grinned with a nod. “The path is more clear now. Let’s push on. I think the stairs are close.”
True to theory, the sandy weather was a welcome sight over the obscuring misty fogs in the throes of the dungeon. Any hidden threat that would try to surprise the group would fall short from grunts due to sandstorm damage. Only those with part steel, rock, ground typing, or those with sand veil would avoid the onslaught of blinding sands.
For Olly’s end, while it did graze off his fur, the Weather Band did its work, even somehow keeping the sand out of his eyes, as though some mystic barrier blocked any sand particles from striking him there. Didn’t keep him from wincing occasionally, however.. Soon reaching the stairs room. “I just thought about something.. This Sandstorm is only applicable on this floor right..? Does that mean we have to keep re-applying it as we climb..?”
Clara nodded in response. “Yeah, we’ll need to. It’s fine, though; I can keep doing it as many times as we need to, hehe. I’ve got a few Elixirs with me, too.”
“Mmmhh.. U-unless there’s a Pokemon with.. Oh what’s that ability that sets Sandstorm immediately again..?” the skun flicked his ears.
“Sand Stream.” Legion answered. “Known by only 3 Pokemon: Tyranitar, which is unlikely in this dungeon. Hippopotas, and Hippowdon, the latter of which might well be likely.” he further noted.
“Well, if there are any of them up ahead, we’ll definitely know right away. Fortunately, at least, we’re prepared, right?” Blaine smiled softly. “This has been going very smoothly; you two are doing very well given your lack of experience with Rescue work.”
“O-oh, I wouldn’t say I’m contributing too much, honestly..” Olly noted, flicking his tail slightly, only to be stroked from the side by one of the Silvally’s claws.
“Nonsense. You’re not weighing us down, you’re holding your own, and that’s all that can be asked of you, my friend.” he gave a firm nod. “Let’s keep moving.”
So the chimera ventured onward. True to his feelings, there were a couple traps on the floor, all of them stickys, fortunately enough, the chimera shaking off the gooey spray. “Hmh.. I guess it only really sticks to items, doesn’t it?”
Blaine nodded. “And only certain items, as it is. I’ve never had this stuff get stuck on my collar… just my Looplet once. I’m glad you’re leading this off, Legion…”
“Don’t thank me all at once, there might yet be more traps undiscovered. Just make sure you watch your feet.” he noted, the group eventually coming to the next set of stairs, as well as two items. “Hmm? Ah..” inspecting them, Legion found it was a pair of Technical Machines. “Interesting.. A TM for..” the chimera squinted to read the number and name. “..Rock Tomb and Stealth Rock.. Very unusual how they’re just out here like this.. But no Monster House so..”
“...Well, I don’t see why we don’t take them, then. You don’t think they’re trap bait, do you?” Clara tilted her head slightly, a little confused by the situation.
“Probably not. They would’ve sprung something by now if that was the case.” Olly offered, shuffling up, scooping the discs with his tail, rummaging them into his tail-tucked bag. “There we go. Onwards?”
“And upwards.” Legion concurred, advancing up the next flight of stairs, more than half done with the first part of the lower end of the Plains. “I still wonder what could have used that One-Room Orb.. I don’t suspect that wilds would be able to use them normally..”
Out of sight, but trailing behind the group as they ascended to the next level, the smirking face of a ‘Zorua’ would shuffle out into the stairs room, snickering softly. “Nihihihihi..! Hohh I love how clueless they are.. Mmmhh~ Just a little ol’ Zorua minding his own business.” beyond that grinning shroud, Zane took in the delight at just how he messed with the chococario and company.
“Quite a fine show you’ve put on so far, but I wonder how you’ll fare when you finally reach the upper echelons of this place.~ I know it like the back of my claws, and you don’t. Hmhmhm..” Fading into the shadows again, the silver-tongued, suave Zoroark kept his distance, continuing his hallowed following of the quartet.
Upon reaching the seventh floor, Blaine stopped, just for a moment. “...I think… is it just me or is it getting a bit darker, too? Dark and fog is never a good combination…”
“..No, I’m noticing it too.” Legion concurred. “No doubt a testament to the ‘Moonshadow’ part of the dungeon’s name.. I don’t imagine the illumination will get any better until we reach the higher hill part of the plains..” he huffed. “A Luminous Orb would be ever-so-wonderful at this point.”
“B-but I’m pretty sure we don’t have any..” Olly perked up. “A-and even then, it wouldn’t help with the fog anyway.. Sight’s gonna be more of a hassle, if anything.”
“We’ll just have to improvise a bit. I’ll lead our way…” With an exhalation, a pair of lightly-glowing greaves seemed to materialize over Blaine’s feet and legs, giving the group just a bit more light. “...and light our path. Keep alert. We have no idea what we’re dealing with here.” With that, the Lucario continued down one of the ‘hallways’ of the floor, body lightly tensed.
“Hmmh.. I can be of some further aid to that.” Legion noted, cycling through his typings, settling for Fairy/Flying, the glow atop his helmet and from his harness illuminated slightly a few feet from his body, advancing onward, the Skuntank keeping close to the chimera.
“Mmmhh.. I-I have to wonder how well that Sentret’s doing.. Y-you don’t think it ran into one of the wilds and g-got itself eaten, do you..?” he flicked his ears.
“I would hope not. Still, we won’t have any way of knowing for sure ‘till we get there. Given how misty the area is, that Sentret could probably find a good place to hide; they have good vision, too, so that’ll help them.” Blaine glanced over his shoulder before continuing into another room. “...Look out. Wildlings incoming.”
Facing down the group would be at least three of them, a Gastrodon-East, a Vespiquen, and a Sableye, Legion firming himself. “Interesting.. Two of them only have one weakness.” he gave his claws a flex. “I’ll take the imp spectre.”
Clara cracked her knuckles, nodding. “Leave the bee to me. Blaine, you got the slug?”
“I’m on it. ...Go!” With that shout, Blaine closed the distance, spinning around and arcing a roundhouse kick at the Gastrodon, boosted by the bone greaves. “Hiyah!”
Clara whirled around, launching Dragon Tail at the bee. “Been gettin’ a lot of fighting in lately; can’t complain!”
The slug’s body congealed into the heavy impact, but true to their physiology, it was only a minor inconvenience, the ‘don retaliating with a point-blank Scald to Blaine’s face. The queen bee steadied itself, a small swarm of insects surrounding and bolstering it with Defend Order.
“Vruaahhh!” Legion charged the Sableye with Multi-Attack, the imp simply grinning, conjuring and lashing out Will-o-Wisp, striking and burning the chimera with a cringing grunt, his attack power halved, the gem gremlin grunting as he was smacked back.
Olly quivered, watching the group fight their targets. “G-get ‘em, guys..! T-thwack ‘em down!” he supported through words, tail twitching, ready to lend long-range support as needed.
“Aaahgh!” Blaine yelled as his face was blasted with scalding water, stumbling backwards, covering it with his paws. “Ffffuck, that hurts!” He grimaced, stepping backwards. “Ow, ow, that’s a burn… that’s not good…”
Clara grit her teeth, seeing the bee buffing herself up. “...Legion, go part-Ghost! This won’t hurt that Sableye, but…” The dragonfly took a deep breath.
Recognizing that a Boomburst was inbound, the chimera called out. “Olly! Cover your ears now!” he grunted, shifting the flying subtype to ghost, tangling with the gremlin some more.
“E-eep..!” the skun hit the deck, paws covering his ears firmly, clenching his eyes shut. The Gastrodon kept up the pressure, its body briefly glowing with the energy of the earth, the ground rumbling under Blaine’s feet, before surging in a ground eruption of Earth Power!
Blaine yelled out again as he was launched by the attack, hitting the ground hard a ways back, not too far from Olly. “Nngh!”
Clara snarled as the Lucario hit the ground, before unleashing Boomburst in a loud screech, the Vespiquen being knocked backwards despite the buff to her defenses.
The sound also blasted the slug, and even rattled Olly a bit, shaking and whining, the bee finally deciding to go on the offensive, the same swarm that bolstered her defenses now launching themselves at Clara for Attack Order.
“Wheheheheh!” The Sableye’s whimsical, cruel cackling came as he traded Shadow Claw blows with Legion’s Multi-Attacks, the burn really weighing the chimera down.
“Rgh..! Olly! Pass out Rawsts as soon as you’re able! We need burn healing here!” he growled out, clattering claws on claws.
“A-ah.. right..!” the skunk hurriedly rummaged through his back, taking out two rawsts, nudging one to Blaine, as well as a Sitrus Berry. “H-here, take these and get back in the fight.”
Blaine chewed up the berries quickly, swallowing before sitting up. “Haah… thank you, Oleander. All right… oh, I have an idea. Can you ready Sludge Bomb for me?” The Lucario stood, taking a slow breath to ready himself again.
Clara continued to fight the bee, corkscrewing around the attacking swarm before slamming another Dragon Tail at her. “Rrgh, this Vespiquen is pissing me off…”
“H-huh..? Er.. Well o-ok.” he nodded, concentrating, foaming more toxic ooze at the tip of his tail. “I-I hope you’ve got some sort of plan.” he whined, chucking the other rawst to the chimera. “Legion!”
Snapping his beak around the berry, grinding and glucking it, the Silvally groaned as the burn faded from his body. “I appreciate it!” he huffed, turning back to the gremlin, seeing its jewels glowing as it used Recover. “Oh you’ve gotta be kidding me..”
It wasn’t just the Sableye either, after the quen took the second blow, she grunted, summoning the swarm back to her, now using Heal Order. The Gastrodon picked up into a Recover as well, Olly whining. “S-seriously..?? Why do they have healing moves..!”
“It’s fine!” Blaine grit his teeth, before shoving his paws into the ooze coating the tip of Olly’s tail. “This ought to give them something to think about… watch this.” When he pulled them back, his paws were dripping toxins… and when he flicked them upwards, several bone knives glowing bright sickly purple appeared between his digits. “Clara, down!”
Without saying anything, the Flygon dropped to the ground, and Blaine’s body flickered a bit as he utilized Bullet Punch’s speed, rapidly flinging poisonous Bone Knives at their opponents.
Legion leapt clear, leaving the Sableye confused, before seeing the knives. ”Whehh!!” the sharp, poisoned tools hit their marks, shinking into the slug, bee, and gem spectre, not taking too much damage, but it had the intended effect, poisoning the group, leaving them grunting and coughing.
“Very clever..” Legion nodded. “Let’s clean these mooks up and move on!” he roared out, darting right back in, frontflipping, rending his claws into one precise Multi-Attack, slashing the gremlin, causing it to screech out, getting tumbled and thunked into the wall.
“W-wow..” Olly blushed softly, smiling. “I-innovative.” he huffed, shuffling up, glaring down the Gastrodon. “As for this one..” his maw parted, gathering dark, black energy. “Eat this!” he’d let loose a crackling Dark Pulse, hitting the slug hard, causing it to squeal deeply.
“Nice shot! Now then…” Blaine jumped in to follow up the Skuntank’s attack, swinging a staff of bone and clubbing the slug overhead. “Hyah!” With the resounding impact, the slug ‘melted’ to the ground, knocked out.
Clara grinned, tackling the Vespiquen to the ground. “Looks like it’s just you and me, queenie. Got anything else fancy?”
“Hmph..!” the bee waved a set of claws in a ‘come at me’ motion. “Why don’t you come closer and find out? Your technique is shoddy at best!”
The Flygon’s grin just widened as she cracked her knuckles again. “Legion, swap types again. It’s gonna get a bit dusty in here.” With a shout, she whirled around, kicking up a fierce Sandstorm, seeming almost to vanish from view in the sands.
Olly blinked, curious why the Vespiquen taunted her, before he remembered a key bit of information about them, eyes going wide. “C-Clara wait! Vespiquens hav-” but by the time he got his warning out, it was likely too late, a screech coming from the dustcloud as the bee was onslaughted.
Little would Clara realize she was baiting the Flygon into knocking her out, before losing consciousness she employed her final trump card, which came into effect as the sand settled, the unconscious quen’s swirling eyes glowing purple.. Before a strange energy surged forth, making contact with Clara’s face.
“A-Aaugh!” Clara stumbled, feeling the energy crackling over her body… “Damn it, I…”
“Hold on!” Blaine tossed his head to the side, catching something that flew out of his mouth… before hurling it towards the dragonfly.
“D-Destiny Bond..” Olly finished with a whine, wincing as he saw the Flygon thud onto the ground, the mini Reviver the chococario had tossed quickly taking effect, but leaving her immobile for a time.
“So that’s why she baited him that way..” Legion huffed a sigh. “She knew she would lose, and sought to take one of us down with her.” the chimera shook his head. “A rather cheap, but calculated tactic, I must admit.”
Clara snored softly, fast asleep, but still able to fight, at the least, once she woke up. Blaine sighed softly as he sat down, shaking his head. “Well, we’d best get settled in for a bit. She won’t be waking up for a little while, while her body recovers. I’m just glad I was able to get that to her in time.”
“Mmph..” the skun frowned softly, taking the time to rest up somewhat himself. “A-at least we’ll be okay from the wildlings for a little bit.. Still, that’s just dirty..” he shook his head.
“It was to be expected. We’ll advance onwards soon enough.” Legion noted, checking over himself for any other injuries, then glancing to Blaine. “That slug really had it in for you though, huh.”
“Getting a Scald to the face seriously hurt. I’m just glad that that thing didn’t do anything else besides take advantage of that to hit me with Earth Power; I was fully expecting the thing to try and eat me while my guard was dropped.” Blaine sighed softly, shaking his head. “That was impressive fighting by the way, Legion. You’re quite the warrior.”
“A testament to the original purpose of my kind, which was to fight against a mysterious force in Alola known as the Ultra Beasts.” he explained. “It’s.. Well.. A bit of a long story, honestly. But to start with..” thus the conversation would dwindle on for a time…
* * *
After Clara’s recuperation, and the group advanced further onward, they finally made it to the end of the first section of the plains, coming to an un-fogged area with a Kangaskhan statue. “Ah, finally, we’re clear of that initial mess.” Olly sighed in relief, finding a spot to settle down for a bit. “Didn’t expect it to be so draining..”
“Believe me,” Blaine said, leaning up against the statue, “this work can be pretty rough if you’re not used to it. I can’t thank you enough for accompanying us; it likely would’ve ended quite badly if just Clara and I had gone.”
“No doubt about that.” Legion concurred, stretching himself, loosening, and even yawning that gryphon-like maw of his, whether he intended to show off or not, but it wasn’t likely. “Hhhhhhh… It’s a touch taxing.. But..” the beak came clacking shut. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying the dance of battle.” a chuckle came.
Blaine just grinned in response. “My kinda guy. Awright, we shouldn’t wait too long; no telling what could happen in a place like this. You guys still feeling okay?”
Clara nodded. “Yeah. I’m doin’ alright; and… I’ll try to be more careful next time.”
“S-sorry I couldn’t remember quicker.” Olly whined, fur quivering a bit.
“It’s not your fault, Olly.” Legion stroked his companion’s side, nodding. “I wouldn’t have been able to predict Destiny Bond either, you weren’t in error.” he assured. “I digress, let us press on.” shuffling to the northern part of the in-between area, the chimera squinted. “Ahh.. It seems the fog’s let up after this point, that should make things slightly easier.”
“Yeah. All right, guys. Let’s close this mission out.” With a slow exhale, Blaine lead the group ahead to the next area.
Into the first floor of the Upper Moonshadow Plains, the intrepid quartet continued to saunter on, with Olly still semi bringing up the rear. “Huu.. Just this and we’ll find it on the next floor, and we can get back to Clearspring.” he lamented. “I-I’m gonna need serious relaxation after this.. A-and a big hearty meal too.”
“I’m sure we’ll be able to accommodate those needs upon our return.” Legion assured, typeshifting once again, settling for Steel/Fairy. “Just a bit longer. I half-wonder if there’s anything interesting in this upper area in terms of items though..”
“We’ll have to see,” Blaine replied. “First things first, though… the Sentret. Keep your eyes open for danger, too… no clue what kinds of Pokemon might be here, either, if there’s anything new.”
“Beware of traps as well.” Legion added. “I don’t doubt there’s at least one or two other types in this upper part.” he huffed, trodding onwards, constantly surveying the area.
“Yeah. Stay in formation.” Blaine nodded, walking alongside the chimera. “I think the stairs are nearby, too… though I can hear some wild Pokemon around. Be on guard.”
“Ohh, I hope we don’t run into another Monster House..” Olly sighed out. “T-though if there is one, at least I’ll be prepared to ‘lay down cover’ as it were.” he nodded slightly, lumbering further along.
“There’s a room up ahead,” Clara said, leaning her head forward a bit, “but I can’t tell what all’s in there. The fog’s cleared up but it’s still kinda dark.”
“Could be one, then..” Legion surmised. “Can you see any items or Poke on the ground at least? That’s usually a surefire sign there’s an MH in rooms.”
“...Yeah. A red-colored TM. And the stairs. What’s the plan?”
Blaine closed his eyes, thinking intensely. “...I’ll run in ahead of you guys, get their attention. You slip in, grab the loot, then lay down Smokescreen and get to the stairs. I’ll follow.”
“A-alternatively..” Olly piped up, shuffling forward. “I-I can douse the whole room with Smokescreen once we’re inside, i-it’ll send ‘em into a chaotic frenzy, if anything, might even get ‘em to attack each other if I time it right.”
“Hmmh.. It’s something, but you’d be putting yourself in the open if you go first.” Legion pointed out. “What do you think Blaine?”
“I don’t want him to be put in danger. I’ll take the risk.” The Lucario folded his arms. “It’s safer this way. I’ll rush in and try to clear the entryway so they don’t realize you’re there ‘till it’s too late. Are we ready?”
“Oh.. A-alright.” the skun nodded, firming himself up, tail quivering. “Let’s do it.” the chimera shuffled himself, ready to break out in a sprint. “Whenever you’re r-ready, then. Just hope there isn’t another Gastrodon, hff..”
“All right… here we go!” With that, Blaine broke from the group, several Pokemon jumping into the room as the Lucario ran in. He evaded a Dark Pulse launched his way before decking an incoming Scyther.
The distraction ploy seemed to be working favorably, the house’s focus solely on the jackal as they shouted and cried out, chasing after to pin him down, Legion taking that as their cue. “Go, go!” he whispered, quietly as he could, hurrying into and through the room, Olly sauntering in last so as not to draw attention with his hefty footfalls.
Clara glided silently above the ground, snatching the disc with a swift motion, nodding to the other two. “Now, now; give him cover!” She neared the stairs, gesturing towards Blaine, who nodded in return.
“O-on it!” The skun about-faced, raising his rump, concentrating with a deep breath, his pucker puffing, before a soft ‘fsshhhhhh’ sounded, expelling the covering Smokescreen in the direction of the oncoming mons of the Monster House, blinding them on their approach. “H-haff, there.. G-go..!” he panted out, shuffling up the stairs.
“Nicely done, Olly.” Legion patted the skunk’s side, hasting up after the Flygon and mephit without delay.
Slamming his way through the crowd, Blaine dashed past and up the stairs without much issue, panting as he tried to catch his breath. “Haah… haah… nice work, team... “
Clara looked at the disc she’d gotten. “Hmm, what did we get, anyway…?”
“Let me see.” Legion peered over, inspecting it closely. “..Interesting.. It’s a TM for Fire Blast.” he nodded. “Very potent fire type attack.”
“That’s quite the find.” Blaine grinned. “Let’s get that in the bag; we can figure out what to do with it properly afterward. Now, let’s find that Sentret.”
“Y-yeah. It should be on this floor. Uhm.. B-Blaine you have Aura Sense don’t you..? C-couldn’t you point us in the general direction it might be?” Olly prodded.
“I can try… my Aura Sense is fairly weak, though. It’s… a bit of an issue with me. Still…” Blaine exhaled again, closing his eyes… “...Mm. It’s really hard to sense much, but… I think… north?”
“Alright, let’s press on, but take it cautiously, there’s no telling if that little scout is hidden, or if it ran into trouble.” Legion advised, localizing a northern corridor. “This way.” the chimera led on.
“Let’s move.” Blaine nodded, following behind the chimera. “It’s probably close…”
“S-sure hope we’re not too late..” Olly murmured, waddling and lumbering along, keeping his ears perked up, sauntering through an almost-empty room, save for an ambushing Weavile, unfortunately for the ice weasel, it was laid out immediately by a crashing X-Scissor from Legion. “W-what’s with all the Sneasel family here, seriously..”
“I’m uncertain, but I’m not letting any more of them get the jump on us.” the synth-mon huffed, pressing through another long corridor. “..I can see something up ahead.”
“...I can sense… something odd…” Blaine frowned, closing his eyes. “...I can sense the Sentret’s Aura, but… there’s another aura… oh, shit! I think another Pokemon ate him!”
“And it doesn’t look like the type that can be reasoned with..” the chimera griped, shuffling out into the room.. Sure enough, the group’s gaze would come to rest upon the bulwark sand hippo, Hippowdon, a male one at that, given its sandy-brown body spots, whereas a female would have all black-sand coloration.
Snorting upon seeing the new arrivals, its gaze glared at the group. “More trespassers? Hmph, sure are quite a few today, what do you want?”
“Not planning on sticking around. Just looking for a Sentret who got lost here. We get him, we’ll be outta your non-existent hair in a flash. You happen to, ah… know where one might be?” The Lucario’s expression didn’t change as he rested a paw on his hip.
“Yeah, I saw that little bugger.. Or rather, I felt him bump into me, and by that I mean he wasn’t looking where he was going while I was sleeping..” another snort erupted from his nostrils as he glanced to his midsection. “Wound up tumbling down my throat and woke me right up. Hrmf.. Y’know how irritated that gets me?”
“I can only imagine, but if you’d be thoughtful as to cough it up so we can be on our way..” Legion started, before the hipp thudded a heavy foot onto the ground, giving a firm grunt.
“I’ll have it known I am NOT in a good mood from being woken so abruptly. And when I don’t get enough sleep..” a heavy, longer snort blew out as the hippo’s Sand Stream triggered, gusting sands whirling and whipping up around the room. “I get cranky. And when I get cranky.. I need a good fight to get over it!”
“...Great.” Blaine grimaced, hopping on his feet. “So much for a peaceful resolution, eh? Guess we have no choice. All right, big guy. We’ll indulge you. We gotta get that Sentret.”
“You can certainly try..” The hippo fixated his gaze on the brown cario. “Come!” At that and a roar, the hippo heaved itself up, already starting strong as its forepaws thudded to the ground, rumbling shakes quaking forward.
“E-Earthquake already?! A-agh!” Olly yiped as he braced himself for it, Legion having remained levitating due to the flying typing, now adjusting his sub-type to grass as the ground shook powerfully.
Blaine had jumped as soon as he realized the hippo was going to use Earthquake, flipping over. “Take this!” Combining Bullet Punch with High Jump Kick, the Lucario launched a flurry of blows at the Hippowdon, gritting his teeth.
Clara flew in to follow up with a Dragon Tail. “Hope you’re ready!”
Grunting from the impact of Blaine’s combination strike, the hippo snorted, jutting his head up to flip the Lucario off behind him, seeing the oncoming Flygon. “Poor choice getting close!” he growled, gaping his jowls, the blunted fangs glistening a chilly blue.. Before frosting over, charging forward with Ice Fang.
“Clara, veer off!” Legion shouted, rushing the hippo’s side with a Multi-Attack, his claws almost seeming to bounce off the hippo’s tough hide. “Grgh..!”
Olly would still be reeling from the effective hit, sent flopping hard onto his back, shivering and whining as he rolled back to his feet. “U-ungggh.. T-that hurt..”
“Nngh!” Blaine yelped as he hit the ground, picking himself up. “That… barely fazed him. Damn it. Okay, change of plans…” With a slow breath, the Lucario created a bone staff, moving to strike again.
Clara managed to avoid getting chomped for the most part… except for her tail. She yelped as she was bit down on, shivering as the cold set in to her body. “Hhhhh! Uuggh…”
“Cold, isn’t it?!” the hippo snarled, giving a heavy toss, chucking Clara off the side to one of the walls, turning about, glaring down Legion. “Next!” snorting, the hulking behemoth charged in with another Ice Fang, only to be met with Legion shifting type once more to water/flying, clashing with another Multi-Attack. “Grgh..! That should’ve dented you more.. How..!”
“I’m not restricted to one type.” the chimera replied, slashing his other claw, sending the beast back with a hefty skid. “Olly! Are you alright!”
“Y-yeah.. I’ve felt better though.” the skun groaned, shaking his fur, flanking the hippo with a searing Flamethrower, causing the brute to grunt heavily. “G-geh.. He’s so tanky..!”
“Nngh! You’re tellin’ me!” Blaine slammed his staff into the hippo’s side once, twice, three times with as much strength as he could muster, grimacing. “I’m barely denting him!”
Clara grit her teeth as she started to hover again, shaking some ice crystals from her tail. “This ain’t good…”
“Humph! This all you’re able to muster? I thought you’d fare a lot better than this.. Not even worth the effort!” the behemoth growled out, scraping the ground, before turning his gaze to Blaine. “You’re starting to bug me!” those jowls came gaping again, though this time igniting with flares, lunging a Fire Fang out at the jackal.
“Ghhk! I don’t think so!” Blaine yelped, thrusting his paw holding the staff out and extending the weapon, holding the hippo’s jaws open. “Try this on for size!” Sliding underneath the hippo, Blaine ignited his feet, using Bullet Punch to rapidly strike the Hippowdon’s underside with a blazing kick barrage.
“Hwork..!” Grunting and gagging at the obstruction in his jaws, the beast grunted, flinching eyes closed, shaking his head as he felt his gut being assaulted by all the blows, groaning out. “Ghuk..! Auahgh..!”
“That’s the way, keep the pressure up!” Legion called, rending several Multi-Attacks, now dual-typed grass/water for maximum damage, causing deeper, pained groans to rumble from the hippo, its legs starting to shaken. “Blaine, get clear! This giant’s about the collapse!”
“Gah, right!” Blaine rolled to the side from underneath the hippo, jumping backwards. “Haah… haah… did… we win?”
For a moment, it seemed the Hippowdon wouldn’t fall.. But in due time, a long groan sounded as it collapsed with a heaving THUD.. shaking the ground slightly as it was laid, defeated. “Whew.. We won alright.” Legion nodded. “Now to get that Sentret out..”
“I-I think you’re the only one able to do that safely, Blaine.” Olly shuffled close, furling his tail out. “I-I’ll hold his jaws open, here.” slipping the tip of his tail through, the skun grunted, tugging and parting the unconscious hippo’s gaping maw wide, holding it firmly open.
“...Can’t believe I’m gonna end up doing something like this while on duty…” Blaine chuckled softly, before taking off his collar and Looplet, giving them to Clara. “Okay, here goes…” the Lucario sighed before crawling into the hippo’s maw, poking further in to try and get him to swallow on reflex.
Even unconscious, there were parts of one’s body that acted on sheer impulse and instinct. The hippo’s tongue and digestive system was one such part, that quivering flesh pressing up, lapping into Blaine’s belly and chest fur, a quiet grunt sounding from that passage ahead, before the chococario found himself lodged and pressed in.. A wet Glrrrrk sounding as gag reflexes triggered, sending the unwitting ‘snack’ down into that tight, wet gullet.
From there, it was a slow, but steady, constant ripple of instinctual clenches, and rolling squelches, the unconscious impromptu predator glucking and swallowing the cario deeper into his slick, wet depths, Blaine’s ears able to pick up faint chitterings further ahead, coming from the Hippowdon’s gut.. The Sentret no doubt, as yet undigested it would seem.
The Lucario grimaced as he was pulled further in, holding his badge tightly in his paw. “You doin’ alright in there? Hold on, I’m here to rescue ya!”
The Sentret was coated with the slimes of the hippo’s gut, whining and shaking. “A-ah..! T-thank you so much..!” it chittered out, observing his savior splurching and squelching out into the sloppy, fairly spacious stomach with him. “D-did you really have to get eaten too to save me though..?”
“Yes, yes I did. This wouldn’t have worked otherwise.” Blaine held up his badge. “Now hold still…” Raising it aloft as best he could within the hippo, a bright light engulfed the two of them, slightly visible even from outside, as the Lucario warped himself and the Sentret out of the large Ground-type and out of the dungeon.
With a grin, Clara did the same with hers on the outside, warping herself, Legion, and Olly out as well.
* * *
After many heartfelt thanks were given from the Sentret, as well as the promised rewards, the scout scurried on to whatever it called home around the region, Olly smiling, relieved the mission was a success.
...This moment was quickly broken as a chuckle sounded out from nearby. “Well, well, aren’t you quite the cheery quartet now.~” Their gazes would turn to find the approaching figure of a Zorua, but at Legion’s glare, the small fox smirked, shimmering and unveiling his true form.
“Zane..” the chimera spoke. “What are you doing here?” a growl came from his throat.
“Oh don’t give me that look, I’m not here to rough you up.. Though I might, might have had something to do with that little one-room monster house, hmm?~” that suave grin remained on the Zoroark’s face.
“...Oh, you asshole!” Blaine grit his teeth, a set of Bone Knives between his digits in an instant. “...So what’s your game, huh? Why follow us?”
“Mere curiosity, dear little.. What did Auron call you.. Ahhh yes, ‘chococario’ I believe it was?” he chuckled, folding his arms. “As I said, I’m not here to rough you up. I was intrigued seeing those two along with you and that lavish Flygon coming here.” he gestured to Legion and Olly. “I couldn’t resist messing with you just a little. Ohh the reactions on your faces.~”
“Hnnn.. D-Don’t you have anything better to do..?” Oleander whined. “It’s been a long day.. I’m tired, and I need something to eat soon..” at that his stomach gave a deep groaning rumble.
“I merely wanted to offer my congratulations on saving that little Sentret. Keh, that and comment on how amusing it was that this jackal had to crawl down a Hippowdon’s throat to do it. Marvelously entertaining.~” the fox snickered.
At that, Blaine flicked one of the knives. Just aiming to shave off a bit of the fox’s mane. “...You are unbelievable. It’s small wonder Auron can’t stand you.”
“Touchy, touchy.” the fox shook his head. “You’re about as stiff as a 2x4.” he rolled his eyes. “I did need a light ‘touch-up’ though, so thank you for that. Hmhm, safe travel back to Clearspring now.~”
At that, the illusionist leapt to the trees, taking off before anyone could get another word in, edge-wise, Legion sighing. “Let him snark. Sooner or later Auron will deal with him, I’m sure.”
“One can only hope.” Blaine rolled his eyes, sighing. “Let’s head back. I know Oleander said so already but I could also use a nice rest. Clara?”
“Don’t you worry ‘bout me, Blaine. I’m gonna head back to HQ and take care of the mission report. Ampy and I have plans tonight, sooo…” She winked. “You three have fun.” With that, the dragoness took off back towards Clearspring ahead of the other three.
Blaine chuckled softly, waving. “Well then… shall we? We can stop back at the cafe for a meal after; my treat. Least I can do to thank you both.”
“We’d be delighted.” Legion nodded, beginning the long trek back. “That Hippowdon had quite the tough hide.. I know they’re regarded as powerful bulwarks in sandstorm teams in human competitive battling but Arceus..” he shook his head.
“Y-yeah.. That Earthquake really sucked a fat one..” Olly whined. “I’m gonna be sore for a while after that, that’s for sure..”
“Well, I’m sure food and rest will help. Let’s go.” Blaine smiled before starting on the path home. He seemed to have a bit on his mind as they walked. “...Urgh. Legion, do you know much about different moves? Bullet Punch… I’ve had that move since I was born, but…”
“Lately, it just seems to be dropping off in power? Mmh, yes, I know a fair bit.. But not nearly as much as another figure currently holding a business in Clearspring. His name is Einstein, a shiny Reuniclus at that, he’s made a name for himself as a Move Teacher.” the chimera explained. “I understand that Keon, Auron’s Grovyle teammate, had his entire moveset revamped by him.”
“...I might have to talk to him when we get to town. If it’s on the way, I’ll talk with him quick before we head to dinner. That okay with you guys?”
“I-I can wait a bit longer, yeah.” Olly nodded. “Though uh.. Einstein does charge a fee for every move he teaches, so ah.. H-hope you’ve got a fair bit of Poke saved up.” he tacked on, waddling after the other two, onward back to town..
* * *
By the time the trio returned to the market square of Clearspring, night was already starting to settle in, an ideal time for dinner, to relax, and more. Legion leading on as he led Blaine to the spot where Einstein held his business, coming to a small hillside where the shiny Reuniclus hovered in meditation.
“Seems I’ve got a prospective, late-evening customer.” he spoke up, eyes opening to the approaching trio, fixing his gaze on Blaine. “Acquaintance of Auron’s if my memory’s still good, you’re Blaine, right?”
“I am.” Blaine bowed slightly to the Reuniclus. “You’re Einstein, yes? The pleasure’s mine. I do hope that it’s not a bother, but… I need to update one of my moves. I just don’t know what with.”
“Bullet Punch, right? Before you ask, yes I did pick up on your thoughts as you came into town. Hard not to, really. But let’s see if ol’ Einstein can’t get you situated with something good.” hovering one of those blobby arms forward, the psychic murmured a bit to himself as he delved silently through all the prospective moves the cario could learn, before perking back up with a whistle.
“Well damn, who’d have thought you’d have that as an option? You my friend, are quite fortunate. You want more power and bang for your buck? You’ve got the prospect to learn Meteor Mash.~”
“...What?! ...That move that Metagross is known for? That Meteor Mash?! ...How?!” The Lucario’s jaw had dropped as he took the information in.
“Yeah. What, you didn’t know?” the Reun smiled, before realizing. “Ooh right, you couldn’t have known because o-” he stopped himself short. “Whoops, can’t be going on exposing that right now, now can I? But yes, the very same Meteor Mash that all Metas use to punch the shit out of other Pokemon with the force of a human semi truck. It’ll run you.. Let’s see.. Hmmmh.. About.. 18,000 Poke.”
“...Arceus. I suppose it’s good I don’t spend a lot of what I save up…” The Lucario exhaled before nodding, reaching into his bag and pulling out the necessary coins. “This will be worth it and then some if it boosts my combat performance. Thank you a hundred times over.”
“Trust me kid, you’re gonna knock some heads clean.~ Whether literally or not depends on you.” he noted, almost knowingly as he counted up the coins. “Alright, you miiiight feel quite a pinch in your head. This sort of thing happens with more advanced moves, and even egg moves.” he warned, hovering his hand over Blaine’s forehead. “And a 1.. 2.. 3..!”
The psychic pressure on Blaine’s head would be felt immediately as Einstein wedged and wormed the knowledge for the hard-hitting steel attack into the depths of his mind, wiping any trace of Bullet Punch prior to slating the Mash in fully. “And et, voila, it is done.”
“A-Agh!” Blaine shivered as the feeling passed from his mind. “...Wow, that was strange… but thank you! I can’t wait to try this out!”
“Not a problem, it’s what I’m here in business for. And if you ever need a move change-up, you know where to find me. Good evening to you all, now.” he chuckled, shifting back into his meditative pose.
“That’s incredible to hear.” Legion nodded. “Congratulations on your newfound power, Blaine.” the chimera chuckled, before a deep grumble from his and Olly’s gut prompted another topic. “Ah.. We should adjourn to the cafe now, I could eat for hours at this rate.”
“S-same.” Olly blushed softly, purring lightly. “And we’re glad we could help you with this job.” he smiled.
“Of course! Thank you for giving me the time to do this… let’s go. As I said, it’s my treat.” With a bright grin on his face, the Lucario hurried down the hill towards the town square, a bit of bounce in his steps.
“H-he sure is happy, huh?” the Skuntank giggled lightly, waddling down after the jackal. “I can’t blame him. Bet Auron’s gonna be ecstatic when he hears about this.”
“I’d have to agree, the two do seem to have a natural ebb and flow with each other.” the chimera smirked, hastening down with his companion.
All in all, it was a good day for the two members of Apogee, and a fascinating learning experience for the travelling duo, a firsthand look at how rescue team work plays out, and excitement galore to boot.~

* * *
But to start with..” thus the conversation would dwindle on for a time…
* * *

Oh hey, 4 days to Christmas and I'm finally able to post this! Apologies for the delay on the series, had to wait for my good buddy BlankSlate15 to finish up another chapter and post it on his page because, as you might have guessed from the way I'm wording this? It's another collab between me and him!
Again, I wanna give huge thanks to him for pooling our writing talents once more to bring this chapter to fruition, it finally gets me a chance to show off Olly and Legion in a Mystery Dungeon environment,
If you want to see it on his end, view it here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/25816601/
With trouble brewing in the first major dungeon Zane the Zoroark was sighted felling a rescue team, the Moonshadow Plains, travel partners Oleander and Legion find themselves having their aid requested by Blaine the Lucario and Clara the Flygon to rescue a Pokemon that had been caught in one of the higher-end areas.
Traversing through the dungeon, it becomes quickly apparent that while Olly is reserved about fighting, he won't hesitate to lash out if it means defending himself, and Legion, being the jack-of-all-trades type master that he was created to be, shows just why Silvally are not to be trifled with.
And of course Zane is not wont to let the quartet venture through the dungeon uninterrupted, the sly Illusionist of Demise opting to mess with them in the most spectacularly inconvenient fashion for them.~
