Hoo boy did I not realize what I signed up for when I took on this reference commission. I don't normally take shaded references because it interferes with colors/can be unclear to artists who use them, but in this instance as the character is made of rubber and not covered in fur it was necessary to shade (As the look of the material is an important reference in and of itself). If I do another one of these shaded references again I'll need to make sure I charge appropriately for time, this took at least twice as long as a normal flat reference would have if not more. Regardless, I'm fairly happy with the result~
Anyway, meet Shabti, MauAbata's new battie boy! I helped a bit with this character (suggested the name, and the shabti form in the lower right hand corner). For those unfamiliar, a shabti is a small figurine buried with Egyptian dead. It was believed that these shabti would become servants in the afterlife. Obviously burying small figurines versus real people was a lot less macabre, but also saved on space in the tomb.
Shabti here seems to be made of some rather strange material for an ancient artifact, and has no idea how he ended up being made of rubber instead of clay. Regardless, he is here to serve!
Enjoy~

Oh. Wow. That's an intriguing and striking resemblance. My request for the markings was a subtle nod to cuffs and a collar, with a wider Egyptian collar. Ankh on the back I had seen a lot and appreciate. The details of the markings were left up to Ink to doodle.
Hadn't seen that linked character, but I do quite like. Hope he isn't grump that we accidentally have very similar markings?

Well, I honestly don't know if he is grump about that. But to be sure you always can ask him, I don't think he'll bite you :3
Oh dang, that is really close! I'm not surprised, considering I based the markings off of Egyptian jewelry as Mau noted. Other than that my other design constraint was keeping the markings thick and bold as latex is generally made in an applique type fashion which wouldn't work with tiny pieces of material.
I've seen a number of gold/black Egyptian themes characters, so I'm sure it was just a matter of time before common themes were repeated. I will note for the record though I was not aware this character existed prior to you showing me.

Aaah this is adorable! You did a great job with the shading. There are a number of Egyptian characters out there in varying color combinations (my jackal guy is black and red for instance) but I really like the stylized markings here, it really does look like something that could be a read rubber suit!
Thank you! I'm glad you like him c: I know a lot of artists stylize latex a lot but I wanted to get it as close to realistic as possible, especially with the transparency so I'm glad to hear you say he looks like he could be a real suit design.
Oh yeah, definitely! The transparent stuff especially. One of my local friends is a big latex fiend and actually has a wyvern-style suit with wings like this (though not transparent) so it's totally doable!
So I'll toss in my comment on the character since people have pointed it out to me.
Think it's a cute latex batkal.
Are the markings close? Yes
Is this a copy of my character? Nope
Still think people may confuse the characters simply because of the markings. It will happen since the general Ancient Egyptian designs involve a lot of the same aspects.

Thank :3
I have been getting a lot of "this looks like X's character" even if the similarity is only jackal and Egyptian theme.
I adore your character, as I am a sucker for all things Egyptian. Shabti means no ill will, he is simply a humble and faithful servant.
Thank you for weighing in, hopefully it puts to rest some concerns <3

Sure it'll happen again but no issues from me XP love seeing more Egyptian stuff so can't go wrong
Alright, which member of our notoriously debased nobility slept with the flying rat!?
*spits out his coffee*
This made my day. And Hail, jackal-peoples!
