Story by Magarnan
Reunited, Magnan and Kizzeria made haste to the shrine of Xylsa Doom, committed to ending his reign of terror once and for all. As they approached heavy shrine doors, Magnan could not help but notice the image of a great serpent emblazoned upon the door.
“Hold.” Magnan said as he beckoned Kizzeria to him. “This appears to be a warning of some sort, meant to ward off those who may venture this path.”
“Who cares!” Kizzeria impatiently growled. “We have defeated Xylsa’s trials, and overcome the exile he forced each of us into! If this is indeed his lair, he must have run out of tricks to stop us, and there is no place his sorry hide can escape from my fury for what he has done.”
Magnan nodded in agreement and pushed open the doors to the shrine. As he forced the door to give way, the poorly lubricated hinges groaned loudly in protest. It was as though every fiber of its being, the door was attempting to keep the Barbarians at bay from the evil within.
The air inside the threshold was heavy and foul, as though the clutches of death itself pressed down into the musty air, attempting to squeeze the life out of any who dared enter the temple. Undeterred, the Barbarians strode forth down the dank hallway into a dimly lit room, lit only by the fires of massive braziers shaped like serpents’ heads, hung solemnly along the walls of the room. The room was largely empty, with the exception of a large pool in the center of the room, likely used for a form of ritual bathing. Magnan also noted a single crimson gem laying in the shallows of the pool, cracked and left as though it was hastily discarded. It seemed, out of place, for it did not appear to belong to anything else found within the chamber. The thoughts on the gem, however, soon vanished from Magnan’s mind as he saw the form of his adversary, Xylsa Doom, on the far side of the pool, seated with his back to the Barbarians.
Upon seeing his nemesis, Magnan emitted a low growl, drew his sword and cried out, “Xylsa Doom, stand and face justice for the evils you have done, the lives you have taken, and peoples your foul sorcery have decimated”.
Doom continued to face away from the Barbarians, but responded with a deep, sinister chuckle. “Hm-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaa. Do you imbeciles really think you have the power to defeat me? Young fools, you could not possibly understand the power with which I have been imbued,” Doom turned and gestured towards the cracked gem, “others throughout the centuries have attempted what you are about to do, and failed.” As he spoke, Doom revealed an amulet composed of twin serpents, and locked it into his belt. As it set into place with a click, Doom’s form transformed into that of a great serpent, towering above the dismayed Barbarians. “But sssssince you have elected to purssssssue the path of pain, you will ssssssshare their fate!” Doom immediately charged the Barbarian pair, swiping his claws in an attempt to cut them in twain. Magnan and Kizzeria, however, were far too experienced to be taken by such a crude move, and with a dodge and a parry, nimbly avoided the serpent’s attack.
“Impressssssssive!” Cried Doom, “But you must know at thisssss point that you are hopelessssssly outmatched. Perhapsssss if you sssssurrender, I’ll only devour the sssssoul of one of yearg-” Before Doom could finish, Magnan and Kizzeria lashed out in a dual attack at Dooms flanks, in attempt to catch him by surprise in his monologue. It was, however, to no avail, for Doom was prepared for just such an attack. Sweeping Kizzeria aside, Doom began to coil his powerful tail where Magnan stood.
Noticing his compromised position, Magnan called to Kizzeria, “Catapult!” Kizzeria nodded in acknowledgement as every muscular fiber in her body tensed in anticipation for the chance at striking the finishing blow. “Now!” Magnan cried. Perfectly on cue, Kizzeria charged Magnan’s position. Prepared for her charge, Magnan waited to the last possible moment, and used the momentum of Kizzeria’s charge to fling her into Doom’s towering figure. As Kizzeria soared through the air, a grin of satisfaction crossed her face, for she knew the throw was good, and that her blade would swing against their opponent’s throat, allowing her enchanted blade to strike a decapitating blow upon the mighty serpent.
Kizzeria struck true, directly into the throat of the opponent, however, instead of severing the head of their opponent, the blade bounced harmlessly off of the serpent’s skin, reversing all the momentum of the blow and throwing Kizzeria beneath one of the serpent braziers.
A low, guttural laughter emitted from Dooms massive form at the effort. “Ha-ha-ha-ha” Doom cackled, “You fools, you should have accepted my kindness in allowing you live in exile. However, ssssssince you insist on chasing your demise, I shall deliver it unto you!” He then swiftly locked his coils around Magnan constricting him in an iron grip. “And now, you puny dog,” Doom cackled, “you ssssssshall die”.
Kizzeria’s eyes widened in horror as she watched Doom begin to squeeze the life from Magnan’s body. Out of sheer desperation, Kizzeria flung her blade with all her might at the serpentine brazier she found herself near. The blade struck true, severing the grizzly sculpture from its rest, collapse it onto Doom’s imposing figure.
“RAAAAAAAAAAGH” cried Doom as the brazier covered his form. Sparks and flame poured from the brazier onto the serpent’s form and into the pool, creating a great curtain of smoke. The crushing force of the brazier forced Doom to release Mag from his lethal grip. Grabbing his sword and the mysterious gem from the pool, Magnan pulled Kizzeria disappeared into the veil of smoke. “We must find a new strategy,” Magnan said “as our weapons can do no harm to him”. Kizzeria nodded in agreement, and the Barbarians slinked out of the ritual chamber under the thick cover of the smoke.
“Wretchessss!!! Do you really think ssssssuch a cheap trick could stop me?!” Doom spat out, flailing blindly into the smoke. “my amusement with you has come to its end, so flee, flee you puny little cowards, for when I find you, I will give you an end more terrible than you can even fathom in your deepest of nightmares!”
Magnan and Kizzeria moved swiftly down the passage, ignoring the deep rumble echoing through the shrine from Doom’s thrashings to be free. Upon reaching the end of the passage, the Barbarians entered into a small, well-lit chamber. The light, however did not emanate from an outer source, but instead from the end of the room, in which a white lioness, clothed in scant scarlet armor, adorned with crimson jewels, stood whilst furiously conjuring flame. Magnan and Kizzeria crouched behind the corner, observing the figure as she carried out her artifice.
“What is this new devilry?” Kizzeria growled softly. “Whatever it is, we must end it, NOW!” Kizzeria leaped to her feat, raised her blade and released an enraged howl before attempting to charge the glowing figure.
“STOP!” Magnan cried, grabbing Kizzeria before she could build momentum. “Look, she appears to have just been through battle as well. Furthermore,” Magnan said, raising the recovered gem to Kizzeria’s eyes, “this appears to belong to her.”
Alarmed by the commotion, the lioness ceased her conjuring, and focuses all her summoned energy to her hand, prepared to strike out against the ones who intruded upon her solitude. “Who are you?” she demanded, “Speak quickly, or be destroyed.”
Magnan gestured for Kizzeria to stand back and sheathed his sword. “We are from the north, a people whom you may call ‘Barbarians’, we have come on a quest of vengeance for the head of the one who destroyed our people. It seems,” Mag stated, raising the crimson gem into full view of the lioness, “that we have a common enemy. I am Magnan. Who, may I ask, are you?”
The lioness grinned slyly and replied, “I am Scarlet Sonia, I too am one whom you may call ‘Barbarian’. I hail from the great mountains at the edge of the sea. I am an artificer and conjurer, and I too seek revenge against the fiend who inhabits these halls.” A flame of wrath began to flicker in Scarlet’s eyes as the memories surged back to her mind, “and you are a fool for trying to blindly engage that monster in battle! Did you not heed the warning at the entry, or listen to the tales of this being? With a single gesture, he’s flattened cities, and while under the influence of the power within his amulet, he cannot be harmed.” Scarlet’s gaze softened after she touched the jewel Magnan held before her, “But thank you… thank you for returning this to me, its return means a great deal.”
“You are most welcome friend.” Magnan replied, “You spoke of an amulet that is the source of his power, tell me, do you know of a way to rob him of this power, so that we may end him?”
Scarlet gazed deeply into the Magnan’s eyes, with a look that would pierce through to one’s very soul, as though she sought to judge his worthiness. “Well,” she began, “You did survive a direct combat with him at his most powerful, so perhaps you can be of use.”
Magnan snorted at the underhanded compliment, “Well, what then, how do we slay the fiend?”
Scarlet flashed an eager grin towards Magnan “I’ve devised a magical method of destroying the amulet he wields, fod without it, he can neither take the serpent form, nor survive the blows from your weapons, however,” she said examining the cracked gem, “as you can see, I cannot do it alone.”
Magnan glanced to Kizzeria, who smirked slyly and replied with an approving nod. Turning back to Scarlet Sonia, Magnan replied, “If it’ll bring the revenge that we seek, tell us what we must do.”

The saga continues,
Our Barbarians, reunited discover that their nemesis Xylsa Doom, had one last trick up his sleeve to foil our heroes' plans.
Will our heroes prevail? Can they put an end to Doom's maniacal plans? To whom does that mysterious gem in the water belong? This and more when Mag can get his act together and finish writing the narrative for the fate of Barbarians XD
It looks wonderful once more Scarlet! And I certainly agree with the assessment that it is another masterpiece created by your hand XD
I've written the first draft of much of the narrative, and I should have something fitting for the scene ... and the mysterious owner of that gem, ready for a look here soon XD
