Here we see the elusive Water Dragon in its natural habit.
Although a naturally water-dwelling species as the name implies, they are also known to surface onto land to engage socially with a wide variety of exotic wildlife.
Captured on footage is a rare moment of the Water Dragon swaying its posterior in a circling motion, towards a beach patron which it has spotted.
For what purpose is unclear, if the Water Dragon is asserting its dominance, claiming its territory, making a display of power, or perhaps attempting to woo a potential mate.
None the less this ritual is a fascinating display of the specimen's powerful tail and rear muscles, and the captivating sheen of its dolphin-like skin.
A bit of giftwork for shadowsunderer, which has been long overdue.
This was a surprisingly big project done little by little over a long period of time since March last year, based on an original sketch from askmeaboutloom. It was equally challenging making the animation work in 10 frames and the logistics behind shading and detailing each of them consistently.
Shadowsunderer also posted this in his scraps.

Edit: I've fixed a problem where his forearm was missing blue stripes. Ctrl F5 to clear your cache if you don't see it.

Well it's a 0.66 second loop so feel free to watch it circle a few thousand times. :P
Thanks, I really did put a lot of effort into making this look right. :P
Well I've done a fair share of animated icons before, this was definitely the biggest undertaking though.

I have to say, this is really smooth, beautiful animation. Well done.
Gracias. It took a lot of effort to get things just right.
Earlier animation had some really janky, wrong looking movement.

I know some tricks in Flash to achieve that effect, it takes a bit of work but it pays off.
i just know it takes along time to color in flash X3
but i don't know many tricks with it. i got used to manipulating the smoothing to do what i wanted and using layers, that was about it. i have like one or two animations made with it that i don't even remember how i did it X3
i make BG's in photoshop which is why they look so different from the characters. that is, when i do make BG's. but i'm really bad at them.

The flat colors aren't difficult to do, but it's possible to "paint" in Flash to an extent. The line styles somehow make for effectively texturing shading work.
The background here was drawn in SAI, with a really faint movement done with Photoshop filters. Any lower resolution and the effect is lost though. :P

Basically, you just use the pencil tool with the "Stipple" line style, or the "hatched" line style and pick one that looks nice and chaotic.
You set a low opacity and turn on Object Drawing, and scribble away.
From there you can do stuff like turn the completed shading into a single object and use that for layering or blending and stuff.
It can make Flash keel over though since it takes a long time to render, you'll end up wanting to periodically rasterise the shading you've done so you can continue shading, the process is far from ideal.

thast interesting. i would like to see a video or something of you draw something that way.
Huh, well I have OBS, I could probably use that to capture footage of me doing my thing in Flash CS3.
If I get do that again anyway.

The specimen requires further research to understand the purpose of its hip gyrations. If one thing is certain though, this researcher find it to be thoroughly hypnotic.
