Over the black friday week I decided to grab a small watercolor course since it was on sale 'n stuff. I'm still going through it, but I decided I felt more like trying out a painting than studying today.
The course is actually about painting humans/portraits (Bleh) but technique is technique, so it's still a good way to learn stuffs. I had to figure out the fur texture on my own but I think I did okay there. Actually relatively pleased with this... it's got a few issues but I was expecting a lot worse when I started this, haha.
Lemme know your thoughts, folks! For the sake of credit, here's the picture I used as a ref. http://imgur.com/nKnjBiT

Glad you sourced your inspiration. I was like "I know he just used that famous red fox pic."
Is it famous? I just googled 'red fox' and looked for something pretty. But if it is famous I can see why, it's a damn good picture. x3
I'm not too surprised to hear that. It definitely stands out a bit when you see it in a google search. Made for some good practice, anyway!
Then why are you not hugging him to warm him up? What's wrong with you?
i already have, hes in my couch with hot cocoa right now, though i had to cool it a bit so he doesnt burn his nose...
Sometimes I wish to learning digital painting, and dream about doing painting animations xD Stuff like this only reinforces my desire.
My best digital painting so far ^^

Sometimes I wish I was learning digital painting too. Oh what I'd give for an undo button. x3 Looks like you're coming along really well though, do keep it up!
Thanks! I definitely spent the most time on the face. Everything else is just large piles of fluff but the face really had to be right. Glad to hear it turned out okay. :P
Oh this came out quite lovely. Its been quite a joy to watch your work evolve. I wish I could have watched each step of this. I've never been able to make watercolors behave this well.
What you would have seen is a lot of cussing and frustration. Let's just say watercolours do not submit willingly, heh. But thank you very much! If it's any consolation, I cheated a bit and used some white gouache in a few places to liven it up, the watercolours alone were a bit flat. It's so easy to accidentally kill your highlights.
Imgur has tons of amazing photos scattered about. I happened to find this one through google, but I browse imgur fairly regularly and have a massive collection of cool animal photos saved up that I might some day paint as practice. Shame about all the productivity I lost on browsing the rest of Imgur though. x3
I instantly recognized this picture. I tried using this exact photo for reference before.
Ah, then you too have wrestled with this gigantic pile of fluff. He's a worthy opponent, no? :P
I actually have the original as my desktop background. Gonna replace it with this now
Haha, I actually thought this was acrylic at first. Looks like you paint watercolour like I do; quite solidly. Very lovely face detail in there. Beautiful colorations. Are these the pet foxes or do they occur this way naturally?
I'm not sure that I do... there's a lot of soft washes in layers on hot press paper, and I never used thick paint at all. I think what you're seeing is that I scanned it a little too brightly so the whites look super thick, and I also used a little goauche in them which also makes them look a little more acrylic-y. Regardless, I am glad you like it! :D I can't say for certain if this is one of the domesticated foxes, but there are pictures of similar looking foxes here and there and they all look like nature/wildlife photos, so I'm going to guess that this is just a wild one.
The fella does seem to be missing much of his orange, doesn't he?
Your traditional work truly never ceases to amaze me with how gorgeous it is.
I love the muted background and lack of detail in the body, it really makes the face pop in the absence of linework. I am especially impressed with the layers used to texture the fur, I can never get colors that deep with my watercolors. As always, I love your shading, how you use different colors in the face for the highlights and lowlights. So many watercolorists just use Payne's Grey, which can deaden a color when used by itself. I look forward to seeing more of your practice pieces and watching you progress as an artist! Your work helps keep me painting!
=O/,..,O= THAT'S INSANE!!! This one's DEFINITELY goin' in my favorites.
I have dashcam comrade, not Russian. I am fat, decadent American with two dashcams. I drive interstate every day with ass-hole truckers.
This just proves that foxes of all varieties are naturally a bit derp-faced.
Not a place, but a website- https://www.arttutor.com/courses
They pretty frequently have sales, if you sign up to their mailing list they let you know whenever they pop up. P percent off is pretty common, but they're a bit pricey so I wouldn't recommend them unless they're on sale anyway. But the one I've gotten seems to be pretty well put together- an artist sits down and does a painting from start to finish and tells about about what they're doing and why as they go. You get all the photo refs so you can work along yourself. It's not too bad.
If you're after just general drawing courses there are probably better sites you could go to, but this site is all about traditional art mediums it seems, which is where I do my thing, so it works for me!

Quite different from your usual style - Much more photorealistic. I like!
