Captive Nut Puzzle
A little thingy I made on the lathe today. The knurled ring spins freely on the threads, but will absolutely not come off the ends. How did I do it? ;)
The solution will be posted in a week or two maybe, whenever I get around to it.

Does the knurled ring have threads itself?
If not i suspect that was all milled from a single piece of metal. the knurled ring was cut from the center, and the knobs on the end have a slightly bigger outer diameter than the inner diameter of the knurled ring. and the threads were cut last.
just my guess

Yes, the knurled ring has threads, 5/8"-18tpi, matching the threads on the "bolt".
Yeap, that's how I'd do it. Not sure I'd trust my machining to be that clean though :)

Ah yes; the magician's art of misdirection.
One or both ends of the 'bolt' is actually a fine thread cap and machined close enough to look like it's all one piece.
