I am /horrible/ at giving advice/teaching, but I lay down the shading color and subtract/erase where the light would touch.
I had this image at a base 3,000 x 3,000 pixels (with some slight cropping, so not exactly that, anymore.)

THe anatomy and perspective of this is so well done, Not sure if it makes sense, but everything seems so "grounded" and really there in this image,
