This red sheppy is Nilla, the Vanilla Coke dog, inspired by Coca-Cola's on-and-off-again fountain throwback treat.
Although vanilla syrup added to cola dates back to the 40's, it wasn't until the 1982 World's Fair that Coca-Cola began to toy with the idea of premixing the two flavors. It didn't get mass-marketed, however, because this trial run was soon followed by the failure of New Coke. This caused Coke's hesitation to do anything drastically new. A few years later, though, talks began to circle of a new flavor in the works. In 2002, they launched Vanilla Coke in both America and the UK. While it became discontinued in 2006 in America, it remained a fountain option in the UK. Brought back a year later in the US and 6 years later in the UK, it was at first only to be "limited edition", but became popular enough to become a permanent fixture. It also comes in Coke Zero and Diet formulas.
