Orca Mouth Study (3D sort of turnable)
I LOVE ORCAS *cough* anyway, always wanted to do something like this just never thought it would turn out great 'cause I'm aweful at 3D stuff xD
BUT I actually tried it and it turned out pretty good!
So I looked through billions of cruddy diagrams and read a bunch of passages on their innardy things and anatomy-wise, this is probably as close to the real thing as I can get without havin an actual photo reference of what it looks like in there!
Notey Things (with cruddy sketch diagrams): So killer whales can keep the back of their mouths sealed off to prevent water boopage, so most of the time their mouth'll just look like a wall behind the tongue, BUT if that's relaxed like this you would be able to see the epiglottis thingy, which in whales and stuff seems to be in a tube shape that covers the entire esophagus opening. When it's sitting up, it'd leave small openings to the belly transport tube off to the sides of it (the two little lines in the throat), but when prey needs to go in there, it folds down like ours does when we gulp something, to make a straight shot for prey to their new orca home.
SO, thanks for readin and lettin me be weird and throw anatomy things at ya'll :3
Can use it as a reference or somethin if you're like me and are frustrated at there not being any good killer whale mouf references
ALSO here's bigger versions of the Forward and the Quarter Turn for ya'll!

Very cool! Read the whole anatomy! Your terms are awesome

This is some great work man! Very nicely done, from the texture and colors and other minor details, this is a great attempt. I am looking forward to you improving your skills!
If you don't mind me asking, what programs did you use to make this? I am getting more and more curious in 3D as of late!

Thank you! And I used zbrush to get the general shape of it, then just did everything else in Blender and slapped the textures on it with photoshop :D
I see! Well I got two out of three of those programs, zbrush is still out of my reach financially sadly XD.
Thanks for the info! Keep up the excellent work man, you are doing some amazing stuff~

You could also use Sculptris! It's free and basically does the same thing :D
Since you can export an obj file, you can just "sketch" it out there and then model over that in Blender with the retopology magnet thingy!

Ah, that's right! I do have that, so I will try that process out then, cool!
So another question (thanks for your time by the way), how different is Sculptris compared to zBrush? I am sure there are more advanced options and all, but what do you typically use in zBrush that Sculptris lacks?
Ill try to make this my last question, I don't mean to pester you too much!

Pffff zBrush is only better if you're HARDCORE about 3D sculpting, otherwise it's pointlessly complicated and aweful and Sculptris is better and easier to use
And you're fine, I don't mind questions~

OH goodness D= I'm absolutely shocked by how amazing this is <333 I hate to ask, but is there a chance to see a high res version of this? For reference of course <3
Also I'm impressed that you did the research on the "goosebeak" anatomy with their larynx. Hurray for realism!! Also dolphins and orcas have no gag reflex and some of them absolutely love mouth, tongue and throat rubs @///@

Here ya go, bigger versions of the Forward and the Quarter!
And realism is what I live and draw for! I looove anatomy, especially for interesting animals like Orcas, liiiike how they also have a multichambered stomach with a birdy gizzard as the first section :U
And FFFFFFF I would very much like to just poke one of the tongues and then run off having completed a personal quest

I have to admit, most of this holds true for me, too. Even if I don't have the complete knowledge of various anatomical wonders of different creatures, and sometimes have trouble retaining said knowledge, I am absolutely fascinated with anatomy, both external and internal (especially the latter). Plus, yeah, I'd love to just pet an orca's tongue just to feel what it feels like, then run off giggling. XD
You did such a marvelous job with the textures and detail of this display, in addition to just making it damn awesome and educational! Thank you.

Thank you SOOO much for the closeups <3 Also, I really appreciate your dedication to realism. I try to strive for it as well and I always enjoy your work because of it!
I actually worked with bottlenose dolphins for a few months and can tell you straight up that their tongues feel amazing XD Kind of like a skinless chicken breast actually, very smooth and slimy! But also very warm. I mean it's obvious since they're mammals but still a bit surprising at times. They don't actually produce "saliva" like we do so all the mouth slime is more like mucus from the throat. It's pretty sticky!
The best part is of course that some dolphins (and orcas) love tongue tactile. So giving tongue rubs to one (the ones that enjoy it) is very reinforcing to them. Some dolphins are even willing to have their throats rubbed. It's really an individual preference though... I know of some dolphins that are kinda meh to tongue tactile, while others don't like having their rostrum or mouth touched at all.
Never been near an orca though, but I'm assuming the sensation would be the same just on a much larger scale!
Also their forestomach is more like holding chamber than a gizzard. Dolphins don't really need to swallow things like stones... Whole fish digest just fine with acids and slime alone XD From seeing endoscopies though, their forestomach is VERY active with lots of peristalsis but doesn't really grind like a gizzard. The second glandular stomach will squirt digestive juices to mix with food and mucus to digest and soften up food to a point where it can slip into the second stomach for the rest of digestion to occur. The third stomach is more or less the entrance to the small intestine.

This is actually a really interesting endoscopy video of a dolphin's forestomach with fish still inside it. Normally the animal should be fasted before a procedure like this. I don't know why this dolphin wasn't, but it does give you a good idea of what the inside of their forestomach is like... and how gross it would be X3

Whaaaaat that's interestin! Maybe one day I'll get a chance to poke one of their tongues xD
And I'm not sure about dolphins, but at least all the stuff I've been able to find on orca anatomy says that the first stomach chamber acts like a gizzard and doesn't produce any acids, and there's sometimes shells/rocks in there to help with stuff. Then the second chamber is the acid belly that breaks down the processed foods and sometimes leaks into the first chamber, all before the same third chamber that just regulates the flow. It would make sense with orcas swallowing larger, more boney prey sometimes in pretty big chunks, but still not sure if it's all perfectly accurate. Sadly not much readin material when it comes to whale innards :C
GUH WISH THERE WAS A KILLER WHALE ENDOSCOPY SOMEWHERE
BUT OOOH I haven't seen this one before! And that's actually pretty awesome how the stomach waves look pretty much the same as in humans and stuff (and still hilariously different than what everyone's used to when it comes to noms xD)
Also ewwww that grossness is AWESOME

Yes grossness is wonderful <3 I love seeing that sort of stuff because sometimes I question if what I draw is too nasty. Nope stomachs are gross =D
And maybe you're right. I know in dolphins it is unusual for them to swallow stones or shells... but Orcas do eat more than just fish so perhaps they eat harsher materials to help grind food. I do know its not nearly as strong as some bird gizzards though. Meat digests very easily do only the bones of mammalian and avian prey would need tenderizing XD
And yeah I tend to kind of just sigh and laugh at how some vore stuff is drawn XD But hey, some people just don't like realism and that's ok...I just think a real stomach would be more fun in how dynamic it would be XD Just gotta keep all that chyme and stuff away from your face if you can (probably impossible XD).
I can guarantee that there are plenty of Orca endoscopy vids... just none of theme will ever see the light of the internet XD Places that keep orcas are extremely paranoid about releasing any information. Orcas in captivity is such a sensitive subject.

Yeah the first belly's prolly not car squisher strong since they proooolly crush prey a bit before nommin on 'em, but still interestin to think about! Like it would be strong compared some small prey unlucky enough to get sent in there alive xD
And pffff bodies are gross on the inside! Anyone that just spends a few minutes readin on what actually goes on in there would be like "EWW IS THAT WHAT I'VE BEEN IMAGININ?", heck, I'm pretty sure even the air in a belly would have tiny aciddy particles that would start burnin the heck out of your eyes and nose the moment you got in there, WHICH PROBABLY WOULDNT BE PLEASANT
Ahhhh I laugh at some things too though, like I look at a lot of stuff and I'm just like "If only they knewwww, they wouldn't be smiling in there", but yeah and makin somethin realistic takes a lot more effort than just drawin something, so I can also understand if peeps don't wanna drag out somethin just to appease the minority. I just love takin real world things and applyin it to fantasy characters to see what would work and what would just fall apart and die xD

Yeah only weirdos would actually like it in there! *cough* >_>
I dunno just how bad the acidity would be, I mean the average ph of an empty active human stomach is about the same as lemon juice... Which is actually pretty strong and would TOTALLY suck to get in the eyes and any other sensitive regions. But you'd probably have a good 5-10 minutes before things got really uncomfortable XD Plus being covered in mucus would sort of dilute it just a tad. Kind of depends on the amount of air swallowed with you. And if you could "stomach" breathing that kinda stuff in XD Bleehhhhh
I think you did it PERFECTLY in the Faust birthday comic... Like jeez man, that comic is perfect. Like hair standing on the back of my neck perfect XD That mouse is a little freak <3
If you haven't read it, I think you would love Mary Roach's Book "Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal". It goes into a lot of the gross details of the digestive system and even goes into details about animals that get swallowed alive! She kind of makes an assumption that whale forestomachs would be proportionally as strong as a bird's gizzard but yeah birds that eat nuts and stuff have VERY specialized grinding gizzards yet birds-of-prey stomachs aren't nearly that strong XD I always cite the dog that barfed up a live intact toad after 20 minutes of it being in the dog's stomach. The thing just hopped away with no apparent physical or chemical damage @_@ Just because one type of chamber is incredibly strong doesn't mean it applies to all species digestive anatomy. So yeah, if we could be swallowed by something like an orca, it would be an interesting ride! Just as long as you could stand the grossness XD

Assuming there wasn't much movement to the pred and the prey was able to not go face-first into anything already sitting in the belly, they might be able to sit for a bit, yeah! Especially if water was drank with the prey, you know, not enough to drown 'em but enough to overpower anything that was sittin in there already xD
Mucous from the throat might not protect toooo well though, especially if you were wearin clothes, since it'd only coat the outside of the clothing and leave your soft squishyness under it unprotected! BUT HNNGGGG thank you! AND THANK YOOOU FOR TELLIN ME ABOUT THIS BOOK, how did I not know about this :U
Got the e-book and I'ma actually look through it!

Oh yes Mary Roach is an awesome writer XD Her "Packing for Mars" book is also fantastic, and goes into all the disgusting realities of being an astronaut. Like what happens when you barf in your helmet... XD
not to but in but its an interesting conversation lol
but being that orca vore is my favorite i have a question.
if one were to actually be swallowed by a killer whale what do you thing would
make one loose conciseness first. the pain of digestion or lack of air.
i prefer scenarios ware the prey passes out before any real suffering could happen
but i wonder how close that is to the real thing.

Well realistically, a human couldn't be swallowed by an orca. BUT if we were the size and shape of a small sea lion and not torn apart first...suffocation would always win out in any situation if the prey is large. Let's say if a T-Rex swallowed a human (which they easily could have) I doubt there would be any more breathable air in a stomach than what's in a coffin. And as Kei pointed out, probably lots of unbreathable caustic fumes too. The smell would be painfully bad and reduce you to gagging or throwing up... which would be ironic XD. Some animals like fish, frogs, insects, and maybe some small/baby mammals (mice and rat pups) would die from digestion I think depending on the pred.
However if you were swallowed alive by something mammalian/avian (with a fast acting digestive system) you would would probably feel stinging immediately to the eyes, mouth, throat and then within minutes you'd feel it on any other sensitive regions and mucous membranes. If you've ever thrown up you know how painful your throat feels afterwards. Realistically I guess that one might find a stomach only "comfortable" for about 5-10 minutes before the lack of breathable air, heat, and acids become rather unbearable. Honestly suffocation is a pretty terrible way to go especially in such awful air @_@ No nice way to die in a stomach! It's a terrible place to be in D=
Best to just get barfed up XD

I WIIIISH but I'm much too lazy/unskilled with 3D stuff to do anything else with it xD
Plus it's terribly modeled for animation 'cause I'm a derp

This is awesome!!
and it helps that one of my favorite charactrs from one of my favorite RPG maker games is an Orca man, so I look at this and instantly think of him

Very cool work the detail! The feathers or fringes of the tongue are not shown . They help make a seal on the mammaries when nursing. Great work.
Mhhmm! I thought about addin 'em, but they aren't tooo visible on adults unless you're way up close and I'm terrible with 3D stuff and I prolly woulda messed up the tongue model tryin to add 'em xD
This is sooooo coooool~ I wanna rub it @u@
My mate is a bit more neutral about all this stuff, though.
#preyartistproblems?

xD
Oh there are plenty of us that do XD Maybe not the majority though... so sad =(
It has no eyes....
IT'S CLEARLY A ROBOT AND A DANGER TO OUR WAY OF EXISTENCE, KILL IT!!!

fantastic work and a fantastic description XD you are a good biology teacher *nods*
Love your sketch diagrams ! Looks like a biological college book illustration :D
I need this... for reference reasons :V
No but srsly thanks for making this, will come in hand a LOT

This is phenomenal!! Probably the best orce animation I've seen on here!! Well done. Definitely not near enough of orca maws out there. They have such sexy tongues and gullets. Every time I see an artist do an orca it turns out amazing. Why isn't there more stuff like this out there? Thanks for sharing. Keep it up cause this is not terrible at all. You should do more 3D stuffs. Seriously!
This is really reallly nice, I know my way around some 3d an this just...."Killer"~ >w>
Woah!
Okay, that's pretty cool! This entire thread answered so many questions I had.
"Tongue tactile"... Interesting... Like a belly rub to a dog, that's what a tongue rub is to an orca... Fascinating~
