I dunno. I was making a play on his taunt in Brawl. I don't think he's actually moving his legs in those directions--it's an illusion of pure speed.
The original figure 8 run started in Sonic CD, which you could charge up to clear loops, similar to the spin dash, but faster.
The Archies also preferred this special effect to the boring old ellipse. You have to admit, it's cool even if it's a bit illogical.
