From birth I've known little but pain
each footfall I've put down on this earth
takes me further from ghosts that i've slain
and what's it been worth?
Over mountains and rivers my trail
this beaten path i have beaten alone
circles round to the past without fail
ever darker and more overgrown
The mountains can't come between memories
the rivers can't wash away my hurt
and fightin' through this thicket that's inside of me
has left me broken
down in the dirt...
But one day our paths chained
and in you I could see the same pain
the same will to forge on in your gaze
but the same beaten path
was in your wake.
Now I can't say that the past doesn't hurt
but in some ways i'm starting to mend
it ain't that loving you has changed me no
I'm just finally going around the bend
We'll claw at the world together
we'll reap a clear path when we're pressed
I know our journey one day will end
But now you'll be there when I rest...
But one day our paths chained
and in you I could see the same pain
the same will to forge on in your gaze
but the same beaten path
In your wake... In your wake.
Lyrics by Rukis
So a couple of months ago rukis approached me about doing a song for her upcoming novel The Beaten Path. (You'll be able to pick up a copy at AC and also at Furplanet).
It was to be a Country themed song... Since I'd just come back from a month in the USA, it seemed perfect timing to compose a song like this. :] (And at last a good excuse to use my Harmonica.)
>>> You can see the full cover of the novel that goes with the music here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13614595/ <<<
Enjoy!

Absolutely beautiful lyrics, and music over all.
Great job man.

Oh my god...the moment I read about this song in OTBP, I thought this would be perfect for you to create...was not wrong~
wow that was wonderful I loved it. you did a beautiful job on this song
so gonn gets to be the voice of Ransom. Fitting, you have found a good one here. His voice matches what I'd think Ransom would be, honestly. That almost smoky voice, full of memory and past. And Fox performed the harmonica just as I'd imagine Ransom as having played it. All so spot on, and perfection.
This was a great piece, sure made me think of a lone cowboy sitting around a campfire on the plains of the mid west with his trusty horse close by, you never fail to amaze me with your many talents ! SB.
I knew it! I knew it, when I first time saw the lyrics, that Fox is going to be the one to actually compose this song.
I expected it would be more... epic, though, like in gonn's version.

So this is Ransom's voice?... I would have expected a bit more accented. Hehehe! But damm that man can sing!
Excellent composition! The instrumentation is fantastic - the harmonica and steel guitar add that country feel to it. Was kind of expecting an instrumental interlude, but this song still stands out well!
Vocals aren't too bad, either. Pitch is dead-on, but the diction could use a little adjustment - I'm guessing English isn't 's first language? It's okay, it's still damn good!
Fantastic!

Fantastic!
That would be correct! I'm Israeli, my first language is Hebrew, and I do find singing in English a little hard :3
That explains it then :). Yeah phonologically there isn't a lot of overlap between Indo-European and Semitic languages, so speaking both without an accent is a tremendous feat! Having said that, your English is actually quite good (only a trace accent) - I could understand all the words without following along with the written lyrics. I'd bet your singing in English is probably a lot better than my singing in Hebrew (especially since I only know a few words lol).
Well done!
Well done!
Cheers! Gonn is Israeli, so he really does deserve a *lot* of credit for pulling something like this off :)
It's beautiful. You again produced a great piece of music.
Love it.

Wow, this was an unexpected genre! Great job on the piano and harmonica!
Good work here guys! I still like Gonn's first version of this song.

... I cried. And I haven't even read all of OTBP. It seems I HAVE to now.
You always know how to play my heartstrings, foxamoore. I wanted to cry at this one. Well done.
Damnit man, your work, be it collab or not, is always the best thing I hear in a day.
Oh, wow...
I don't feel like I can say anything that hasn't already been said, but this is perfect for the story, and perfect as a song on it's own. I'm feeling a lot right now, listening to it...

Oh my goodness. That made me cry and squeel. Been following the novel since day 1, and this is fits PERFECTLY! Amazing work!
Aw. Damnit. Damnit, damnit... Half of that was touching in a few personal way...
Also, two of my favorite artists working on the same theme.
Great! ;)

It's gorgeous... it reminds me of the music from Mt Desolation (a country styled band including two members of Keane) a lot which is a good thing. Very nice mixing on this, so kudos to the sound man on this one. I like how intimate the instruments are, it's very warm and nostalgic just like the slower Country stuff is.
Very beautiful vocals, they're vulnerable enough for the Country genre and really add to the rest of the music.

Amazing performances by everyone! Very beautiful song
It was beyond refreshing that this song had no mention of tractors being considered sexy or laying down by the river or drinkin' beers. I also really appreciated the slightly older country feel without the strong rock influences I usually hear on the radio these days. Cheers to both of yall for creating something beautiful and unique.
Unique song, the voice is the one I would have credited to Ransom (or Terith'osic). Bully for Gonn. If I decided to sing in English, with Spanish as my first language, it would sound more than dreadful. You and Foxamoore pulled a first-class feat.
Thank you... My heart likes to lock my emotions away, but there are some instances where a key to that lock is found. This song was such a key. Listening to it within the context of the novel it originated (Ch 18, Pt 2) just... let the floodgates open. To everyone involved in this... Thank you.
In this age of terribly written country-styled music, I'm glad to have heard this. It shows me that there are still those who play with their soul, rather than their greed.
I did a disfavor to just leave this in my 'recent submissions to FA" list of those I followed. DAMN man.. this is.. THE FEELS!
absolutely touching, very atmospheric. is there some way i could get a copy of this for piano? i play piano myself and would absolutely LOVE to be able to play it myself. it's just so atmospheric and lovely it would be the crown jewel of my repertoire.
This has got to be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard!!!!! I read OTBP not long before listening to this, and I nearly teared up because it was so beautiful!
is this available through Youtube music? I am transitioning from local music storage to online streaming platforms and was hoping this was available through it.
I JUST found this, and omgs,,,,....
Thank you, all!!!
I'm a die hard fan of OTBP, and Mr. Fox, YOU ARE AN AMAZINGLY TALENTED VULPINE!!!
