This includes the gender-specific language. People here in China don't seem to have even the same shallow understanding of gender fluidity and malleability as people in the US do, so they've just been handling me they way they think they should: as whatever one gender they think happens to fit me better. I used to think that because they don't use gender-specific parts of speech, like Hebrew or Spanish, they might be a little more understanding, or it might be easier to fly under the proverbial radar, but it's actually kind of the opposite. People will still see what they want to see, and the conservative (no, really) nature of their society still lends itself to a certain level of self-deception in order to preserve people's feelings.
