~They rise against the soaring fires.~
Of the list of things I always wanted to draw was Princess Mononoke. It is one of my most favourite movies of all times! I wanted to depict San and the three wolves run against the fires of the Tatara clan and make them look touchable as well as ghostly. I had a lot of freedom on painting the wolves as I didn't attempt to make them look like normal animals, but more like spirits.
This painting means a lot to me. It was more the time I spent doing it and enjoying the freedom of letting my brush run freely, just like Mononoke.
You can download the bigger file. :)
A little extra information to the composition: I know that many are sad about Moro's face not visible in the picture, and when working on this picture, I went through the same thinking process whether it would be the right decision to paint her face or not. I wanted to draw the full attention to San and make the wolves appear more like spirits. The speed and dynamics in this painting would have "stopped" and became stiff, if the one that runs fastest, would be still in the picture, fully visible. This is at least the way how I think and feel. :) I want to do another painting, featuring Moro fully! :D
I have WIPs and close up shots of this painting on my Facebook fan page, too! There will be a walkthrough for this painting available on there soon as well. :D ~> https://www.facebook.com/AlectorFencer

One of my all time favorite movies. San is just like the entire movie: Wild, strong, beautiful. You did her and her clan justice. reat pic!
Awww! Lange nichts über Mononoke gesehen.Sehr schön gemacht! Du triffst echt immer einen besonders phantastischen Unterton in deinen Bildern.
Ahhh this is absolutely gorgeous! I wish I had more to say but I'm just beside myself. Lovely, just lovely!
Die Japaner machen einfach die besten Zeichentrickfilme! Und bei der Musik könnte ich immer dahin schmelzen.
WOW one of my favorite anime`s mononoke hime.
Fantastic work really i am totally stunned.

Wow, I love your illustrations. They always hold such a magical depth to them ^^ keep up the beautiful talent x
I like everything but the eyes, but that's great artist improvisation!
this is a spectacular homage to the movie. Really well done <3
well, we could create bot accounts just to add more favorites to this pic
I notice you left out Moro's face and body. Is there some symbolism to this?
Again, beautiful job. Didn't mention how much I love the lighting.
"In the moonlight I felt your heart, quiver like a bow-string's bow..."
Simply beautiful beyond words <3

You did a wonderful job creating this! It really is amazing how you made them look like spirits!
I don't normally fav art with hyoomans in it... But this is just so much win!
It's very gratifying to see others who have been touched by this beautiful film.
Such a badass piece... I always enjoy seeing your work! ^,...^
I like it - you made the wolves appear just the right amount of otherworldly. A great tribute. :)
The otherworldliness of the wolves makes Mononoke seem like the viewers focal point. Makes her seem more a part of the human world than the spirit world. If you ever do another piece, I'd like to see Mononoke with her mask and fur on, so she really blends into the transcendant nature of her adoptive family. I still secretly see her as more spirit than human. ;)
But I digress - great piece as usual. Spirits and the otherworldly seems to be what your style was made for. :)

Fantastic work. :) This is way up there in the top tier of Princess Mononoke artwork that I've ever seen. Really wonderful. :)
Beautifully well done - excellent job! Love the colour composition and the dynamic poses. Nice work!
Wow, I love this. Princess Mononoke is one of my favourite films
WOW this just such a Amazing peace I think I'm going to set it as my wallpaper. love this film and its special to me as it was the first Anime movie I ever brought (on VHS) and first studio Ghibli film and the first Anime soundtrack I ever owned
This is stunning. Is there a place where one can down load the bigger file?
I love that you used complimentary colors, but for most of the piece it is fairly monochromatic. Works well I think. Excellent choice on the composition too, I agree that showing Moro's face would have interrupted the flow.
Awesome work! Mononoke is one of my all time favorite movies, and I think you captured it quite well.
My only critic, and criticising you is very presomptuous from me, is that her face isn't like it was in the anime.
Otherwise, it's beautiful and it's a fav'.

one of my favorite movies from studio Ghibli. Stunning, well done! <3
Princess Mononoke is one of the best animations ever produced and this is a spectacular illustration of it!!
This is so awesome! I just love this movie and this artwork is so bad ass
Absolutely gorgeous.
I haven't seen the movie in years but I still love it, and this picture absolutely captures Sen's spirit as well as those of the wolves. The work and emotion you put into this clearly show.

Beautiful work. :) A fitting tribute to a wonderful film!
This is a gorgeous piece and I'm glad you could find the time to complete it and share it with us. The art artists often do for what they themselves are interested in can be the greatest pieces.
Woah! my favorite movie and an awesome picture. Consider yourself watched and this one favorited.
You're amazing!! This is the most beautiful work of art based on one of my most favorite anime movies of all time!!
