Someone was kind enough to sponsor this fellow to get colored and finished up! I was shocked, but thrilled :D I haven't gotten to draw aliens and get PAID for it in, like. . . nearly my entire life.
This fellow here is a Thrask, a species of my own creation. I can't spill too much about them here, because I'm currently running a game in which this guy is an actual character aboard the group's ship, but I can drop some species details -
-Thrask are arboreal. Before they evolved to a point at which they were intelligent enough to form a society, they lived most of their lives in trees. Their heavily muscled forearms and legs are meant for climbing the massive trunks of the blue/green, leafy trees on their planet. Their upper plates and body are good camouflage against them, if spotted from above. Their tails are prehensile, and used to secure themselves to branches when they sleep.
-Thrask evolved on a planet orbiting a dying sun, which is in the earliest stages of swelling to a red giant. The planet is almost perpetually bathed in a crimson sky, thus the red/yellow underbelly this fellow here is sporting. When seen from below, they blend in with the sky.
-The longest digit with the oversized claw on their hands is used for prying loose bark from their chosen trees, and their long tongues are used to get at the sap beneath. Thrask survive almost entirely on the rich tree sap, supplementing here and there with leaves and other vegetation.
-Thrask are entirely herbivorous. The large 'fangs' the males sport are actually tusks, used only for defense.
-Only male Thrask have horns, but both males and females have dorsal spines. The spines are used for young Thrask to secure themselves to their parents while they are still too young to climb.
-The male sex organ resides safely inside their carapace. But Thrask do have external testes, in order to keep them cool enough to remain fertile.
-After a vicious war with the Cjaffa, a race of destructive alien zealots, the Thrask homeworld of Verna was bombed into a nuclear winter. Now scattered across the galaxy, Thrask have become an endangered species. Despite settlement attempts and the founding of 'New Verna', their gene pool has been diminished so severely, the race has become too homogeneous to sustain itself. Several genetic projects have risen up in an attempt to diversify Thrask bloodlines and save the race, but most Thrask are opposed to them, preferring instead to die off with their honor intact, rather than become a 'manufactured race'.
-Thrask value their family, known as 'clans', and their bloodlines as deeply as some races would religion. A Thrask prays to his/her ancestors, and the race as a whole claims to pull strength from the generations before them. Clans live, work, and fight together in tight-knit groups, very seldom mixing unless it is for purposes of trade, mate-bonding or uniting together to face a common adversary or threat. Unfortunately, it is this clan unity that caused their current genetic crisis. When Verna was destroyed, only a few warships and clans on the surface survived the devastation and were able to flee to safety, and those that did fled as family groups. Entire warships containing one bloodline escaped, as opposed to ships with a mixed crew. All said, less than 100 bloodlines survived the near destruction of their race, and now those bloodlines have been depleted further by scattering and the ravages of resettlement. The fear of inbreeding has been so rampant, repopulation has been slow, and the race is dwindling to a flicker. Most prefer to face their extinction solemnly, rather than riling against it through genetic alteration, which creates Thrask with no true ancestors, and thus, as far as most Thrask are concerned. . . no soul.
This guy here is named Haruva Revelgar. I'll get more into him as things about him are revealed in my game!
And by all means, if someone out there likes this dude enough that they'd like to see a full, and. . . perhaps. . . anatomically-complete rendition of him. . . toss a couple of bucks my way, and I'll make it happen ;) I never considered having anything 'sponsored' before, but this was hella fun, and I'd love to expand on it.

when I first saw it I thought you were drawing a turian xD
then saw the tail.
The face still reminds me of one though

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't gotten a lot of inspiration from Mass Effect, especially in the face. He differentiates quite a lot elsewhere, though. . . tbh, I wasn't crazy with a few of the design elements of the Turians. And they REALLY needed a tail :P
Very nice indeed. Let me know if you ever decide to publish and illustrate a game of your own.
Makes me think of a dragon cross turian hybrid. :P Anyhow, I like this very much Rukis.
This is really cool. I'd like to learn/see more of these guys.
this is awesome :D i wish I played with you....i'd want this guy as my partner XD
I would like. . . squee so hard. You can borrow him all you want! You can even make your own, I don't get possessive with my boys :P
Well now I HAVE to do an 'anatomically correct' sheet. . . . Argh, gotta make time for it this week somehow. . . .
This really is Concept art-tier stuff Rukis. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw something like this in a painting or in a game
It would be awesome if they were like this Juggernaut character that just demolishes EVERYTHING like a total badass.
This is very awesome. I'd LOVE to see you render these guys up Green.
A Proud race for a proud look. It would be nice if the race survived, but to remain true to one's principles is sometimes more important.
I enjoyed watching what I could of you color this guy up! I really enjoy his design and all the subtle little things about the species and such. So very well done <3
Some of the details and portions of the back-story make me think of Hork-Bajir from the Animorphs series, but that's probably just because that's where my mind is.
Hork-Bajir were reptilian-looking, had natural horns and blades, lived in trees, and peeled bark, though they actually ate the bark instead of the sap underneath. Their Homeworld was also destroyed by aliens, but under much different circumstances. They were purposely genetically engineered by another race on their homeworld to be simple-minded though. Either way, I find this drawing strangely-appealing. But then I find Hork-Bajir strangely-appealing and this guy makes me think of them, so yeah. Sweet work either way.

I was thinking along those lines too actually. I read into the Hork-Bajir Chronicles way too deeply as a kid to forget them.
I love the concept and coloration for this guy though, really hope Rukis uses them for future projects. Maybe a new comic.

I enjoy when you post pictures other than your usual furry fare.
This is great, he looks great. He's well thought out, you finished him very nicely, and the backstory makes him and his species more realistic and believable.
I'd love to see more of these guys.

modified star wars d20 system, works well for basic scifi if you take the setting out
Love d20, I've only played 3.5 d&d but I've always wanted to play starwars ^^
So many questions I want to ask you! lol
This is very, very awesome!

haha, I'd just love to have a character of his species! He's so gorgeous, and the amount of detail on his features are just <3
I believe you have a lot of people falling in love with this species now xD

you're welcome to make your own! credit the species back to me is all, and we're golden
By far one of the species of anything I have ever seen! Outstanding work!
I am SO ready to see someone sponsor more of this guy. <3 B'dass
I'm wondering if he be willing to take on another one of his size in a battle over a city. Just saw Pacific Rim and he came to mind.
YOU MUST DRAW MORE ALIENS. Foxy commands it.
(And as soon as he gets money coming in nice and regular enough to suit him, he'll gladly sponsor your things.)

I love this, the mouth is even more interesting to me. I can't explain why though >..>
Very beautiful design and would love to see this in a more battle ready pose

"--Cjaffa, a race of destructive alien zealots" For some reason I was somehow reminded of Stargate when I read this part. A coincidence or a deliberate thing? :3
Wow rukis once again you've proven your skills I am thoroughly inpressed design, detail, everything is just wow awesome, id definatly have to comission you sometime bravo keep up the good work
He's certainly an interesting fellow. Love the backstory. I hope to see more of him. =)
Seriously amazing, Rukis! So much talent and passion here Makes me wonder why I haven't seen some awesome alien designs like this from you sooner ^^ Keep it up!
I used to draw nothing but, but. . . I have to make a living, you know? Sci Fi and Fantasy are hard settings to make a footprint in, their marketplace is so overrun with amazing artists as it is (like say. . . you guys :P) I love drawing furries, and honestly, aliens and anthro animals are pretty much along the same vein, as far as I'm concerned, but aliens just haven't ever had as much of a market for me. I'd really love to do a Sci-Fi comic some day, with my own original alien species. I just don't think I could live off the proceeds the way I do with furry comics. It's something I'd love to test someday, though, when I'm financially secure enough that I could afford to fail.
Yeah I totally understand. In the end your financial security trumps stuff drawn for funzies. Still, I hope very much you get the chance to draw what you wish (soon!) and freely so :)
Regardless, thanks for doing what you do! You rock :)

hes hell of sexy, id love to see him in all his glory and see how he could handle a fire dragon ;)
>_> If I wanted to have a new sona as one Thrask, would you mind? cx
please! I'd love to see more Thrask running around :P Just credit the species back to me
What an AMAZING looking creature.... just fantastic. :)
Woah, he looks really cool. And you're making a game?! I never knew...
this guy is awesome I would love to see more of him and maybe even a her if you have that planed :)
GOD DAMN! I want them in a sci-fi! They are fantastic dragon feline-ish ET and that is awesome.
Is it weird to say that I like how the feet and hands turned out?
Perhaps you could set up a tutorial on how to make alien species for just reading this I could see several things I see I missed in my own frameworks of species.
I would really love to see a female Thrask. Do they vary greatly from their male counterparts? Also, do Thrask bear live young like mammals, or do they lay eggs like reptiles?
they're kind of like platypus. . . somewhere in-between. They lay eggs, but they're warm-blooded. They do not have mammaries, though. . . babies develop inside the egg.
Interesting, thanks for answering! I couldn't picture them with mammaries of any kind.. would seem out of place for their look.
He is really amazing. I particularly love his head ornament. As cool as a design as it is, I can't think of how to make one in 3D. I might try making a female though, since they lack the horns...or my muse gets up off its ass and figures out how to make that amazing crest.
I don't suppose he needs a mount? Just an odd thought.

Goes without saying I like the feetsies. ^_^ Very creative character, and cool to do the detailed write-up like that on him! Those arms are a really cool design, and make sense reading about how they evolved.
The way he opens his mouth and drinks is very interesting and creative. :3
I also like the softness of it, makes it look like it's on an old scroll.
Course, being the verile homo that I am, I can't help but wonder what he looks like when he's...... excited. *hint hint wink wink* Hehe. ^#^

WOW. One of the first things I look at with characters is the face (I seem to have an obsession with them), and this...He's beautiful ALL OVER. @O@
