Iberian Wolf (Canis Lupus Signatus)
The Iberian Wolf (Canis Lupus Signatus) is a subspecie of grey wolf that inhabits normaly the forest and plains of north, northwest and south of Spain.
The Iberian wolf differs from the common Eurasian wolf (gray wolf or Canis Lupus Lupus) with its thinner, the white marks on the upper lips, the dark mark in the front legs that give it this subspecies name, Signatus ("Marked").
The subspecies differentiation may have developed at the end of the Pleistocene Ice Ages due to the isolation of the Iberian Peninsula when glacier barriers grew in the Pyrenees and eventually reached the Gulf of Biscay in the West and the Mediterranean in the East.
Males Signatus can weigh up to 40 kl with females usually weighing 10kg less.
The Iberian wolf lives in small packs. They eat rabbits, roe deer, red deer, ibexes and even small carnivores and fish. In some places they eat domestic animals like sheeps and calves.
