Posted 2 months agoHello all, I realized that the link I posted to the contest got borked when I sent it through postybirb so I've updated/corrected it.

Question of Content
Posted 8 months agoDo people dislike that my content is a range of humanoids and furries or do people wish I would just focus on furries? I'm not like, actually planning to make any changes to my work at the moment but I'm trying to isolate why, on analysis, I just seem to not get much traction in my career development anymore. Part of me worries that my kind "do what I feel like" approach to content is too chaotic...
Axolotl Party Results!
Posted 5 years agoHello all,
I was going to have a nice graphic for this but Krita closed at random and I lost it. Going back to redo it before I have to leave today isn't an option so I decided to go with a journal instead so people don't have to wait. I want to start by saying I adore all the submissions and as a result of that plus the manageable turnout, I've decided to give the two entries that did not place an HONORABLE MENTION designation and a $10 prize. But again, sorting these was hard for me since I like them all a lot. Links to the art will be provided.
For all the winners, please contact me with a note giving the email you use for paypal. I'll be out of the house the rest of the day and when I get in I will forward your prizes. Congratulations!
1st Place [$50]: The Mock Execution of Lex Hanley by Owlor

2nd Place [$25]: Axolotl Models by supercomputer276

2020 Resolution Post
Posted 5 years agoREMINDER: There's still a month to get a piece done for my cash prize art contest: https://www.deviantart.com/lexhanle.....izes-823055115
Hello all,
I wanted to do this post closer to Christmas but with my computer issues it was just not a good time. Now that everything is sorted out, I'd like to discuss my plans for 2020. This year has been a big year for me in terms of growing as an artist and as a game developer. I want to keep up that momentum into the new year and I've set my rules for 2020 accordingly:
1) I've cleaned my computer down to just art and game development software (GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Unity, SublimeText, Steam) in the name of committing my free time to game development. No distractions!
2) I will no longer be charging drawings on Patreon on as Creations. I am a per-creation patreon, meaning I only get funding when I post work. I will ONLY be charging on game updates. I will make less, but it will be strictly tied to producing game products/updates. Related....
3) I will be releasing game updates more often. Up until now I've been keeping updates to about once per month. I will now be releasing whatever I'm up to, ideally at least once per week. In some cases I will prune update releases to just the new level so it doesn't break, but I want to be more okay with showing my work in progress.
4) I will be trying to post more SFW art alongside my NSFW stuff. I've been getting closer to my SFW art over the course of the year and really feel like much of my best growth was in that area because it pushed me to be creative in other ways. Related...
5) I will be aiming to produce more explicit art occasionally. I want to get past my hangups on sexual subjects in art. I've done a bit near the end of the year. This work will be posted largely on twitter as I do not want to push my luck on DA or Patreon.
I hope these changes/ideas will help me focus in on making my smutty lil games for you all at a rate that's not blended with too much distraction. I'll still be posting fetish art, but more on my own terms because I want to. Have a great 2020 all!

Stepping Forward
Posted 5 years agoI'd like to start by saying I will not be deleting my previous journal and all its negativity. I feel that would be disrespectful to those who commented and also denying of what has happened.
Anyway, I spent the weekend in a bit of a crying fit over everything. Manly? No, but needed. After a while I've begun trying to process my emotions so here it goes. I guess what I'm trying to do is both own my disappointment/frustration/whatever and also move past it. What happened sucked. It sucked hard. It's put me in a really bad place that even the federal organization contact who had to tell me about it admits it should never happen to anyone. But it did and we're here. Anyway, I guess what I'm holding onto at this point is that prior to this job offer, my life wasn't bad by any major stretch. I have friends, roommates, family. I'm pretty hard to fire being senior in my department and in a union. I have a Patreon, a DA/FA and it's all been growing nicely. I'm making games, which is something I have wanted since I was a child.
If this all sounds like a lot of forced positive affirmation: it is. I'm of the mindset that if I keep saying it, I'll start believing it and honestly it's working. I'm in a far better mood. So I think the best thing to do is to neither deny it happened nor let it push me to a drastic decision as it nearly did. I will be taking today off from my day job as my grandmother is very ill and I should go visit her (life comes in waves, huh?) but when I get home I will be returning to working on art and programming. I've had my cry and it's time to get busy.
I appreciate everyone's patience in this matter.

All good things
Posted 5 years agoContent Warning: Suicide and Self-Harm
As some of you may know, the last 6 months of my life have centered around my efforts to leave my current employer: a facility that is both openly discriminatory and horribly managed. A month ago I returned here with the good news that I had not only been hired in my field but hired by my country's government, the highest level of employer in my field. So began an exciting whirlwind month of interviews and check-ups and paperwork that was supposed to end in mid November. Some of the paperwork required my current employer's attestation and it drove a rift between us. I went from a forgettable mid-level staffer to a 'quitter'. I had to use my union rep constantly to prevent harassment.
Yesterday afternoon, I was called and informed that the 'definition of the position' has changed and despite having nearly a decade of experience, they simply no longer can use someone with my credentials anymore. I accepted their apologies and realized that over the course of the phone call I had gripped the hair on my head so tightly it had come out in a clump. I spent the rest of the time between here and there pacing the roads near my home. I scratched at my arms furiously until they bled. I debated means to kill myself but proved to be a coward. I simply no longer have any capacity to go on. All the harassment and difficulty was made tolerable by knowing I was leaving. My family was proud of me for getting into the government service. My family's gifts: nice leather folders and a new suitcase, are now sitting, fresh and bagged by the garbage.
I don't know when I'll be back. I don't know if I'll be back. But there's nothing left in me to draw. I'm going home to where it all began.

Commissions Reopened
Posted 5 years agoHello all,
I've decided to re-open commissions. Job hunt isn't exactly going super hot but it's also more steady and less frantic now. Feel free to take a look:

An Unfortunate but not Crippling Turn of Events
Posted 5 years agoHey all,
I'm sorry to do this but for the time being I will not be able to accept commissions. Without getting into too much personal detail my work situation has become a heck of a lot less stable (nothing to do with my personally, a company wide shift) and I really must commit myself to job hunting before something hits the fan around there. I want to emphasize that I will still be working on the game and on art to post here, I simply must dedicate a fair deal of my time to job searches until I'm comfortably situated elsewhere or circumstances at my current place settle down.
I would try to keep doing everything but as it stands I only sleep around 3-4 hours a night and spend the rest of it working on one project or another so it's really not doable. If something goes wrong and I haven't put the utmost effort into job searching, I'll feel very bad about it. Still I know everyone is really supportive of the Patreon and game so I don't want to ease off on those. I'm hoping this temporary hold will allow me to focus on job hunting without making a dramatic shift in how much content I put out.
Don't worry too much for me, I'm fairly well established in my field, have my masters and my licenses as well as a good deal of work experience. I don't feel like this will be a long haul once I get settled, update my CV etc.
I'll keep you posted and thanks!

Patreon Update July 2019
Posted 5 years agoHello everyone!
I have to say it's been a big 30 days and I'm really thankful for all the support. While I don't like to get too into my personal life, I do want to say that I'm currently fishing for a some new day employment (don't worry, I'm pretty established in my field and I'm not out of work. It's more just time to grow. That sort of thing) and the confidence and support of my Patrons has been a big deal for me. Also this past month my computer of 10 years finally kicked the bucket and I needed to build a new one using the funds raised through Patreon. So again, thank you because your contributions really did help keep things moving.
This month also saw the first full level of the game released. I'm excited to finally be out of the 'engine work' phase of development and able to focus on art, sprites and other fun stuff. I know a lot of the more engine-oriented things aren't exactly fun to see by comparison. I'm looking forward to getting the next level, along with a new enemy (the office lady shark) out this month. I'll be a little tied up this upcoming weekend with visiting my family for my birthday but beyond that I'm happy to be safe at home and not in the miserable heat, programming.
Anyway, time to thank all of the backers! Going to go for a block format this time. Don't forget if you're name wasn't featured in the game during the last release it will be this time. I'm adding them among the game's assets after the first successful month of backing. Otherwise it just gets confusing.
Patrons of June!
Alex Xela, Anu Sekani, Chaz Serir, Dalton James White, Dark Wolfen, David Hopkins, DerOtto1, DrPossibly, E.Nigmadox, Foxymetroid, Goudy, Kal, Laytuce, Manjibutt, Max, Nathaniel Rogers, Papadapui, Pip, Quinn Bird, RedTheHusky, Reyquiem, Rhezi25, Skylar, Snippet, Soryu, TheAwesomeAutist, Thomas Sanders, treeshakertucker, Yagami Yami

May Patreon Update
Posted 5 years agoHello everyone,
Well may has come around and I just want to start by saying wow. I really appreciate all this growth on Patreon. Its helping out a lot. April went well for the game project. I had set aside all of April for AI and it turned out to be something I enjoyed and grasped fast enough to move on to other things. While interface assets and such will still be an ongoing thing, I feel confident I can get out of demo levels finally!
I would like to thank my patrons. Unfortunately they tinkered with the interface there again and I'm having a hard time understanding it so I'll have to go alphabetically instead of by longest time backing:
On other business, I've decided to start making more regular use of my Twitter at https://twitter.com/HanleyLex
This is because of the fact many new followers are not on DA or FA. I won't be posting art there I don't think, but it will be an easier way to reach me with questions or just to say hi.

Star Harem
Posted 5 years agoHey all, a friend of the page asked me to give a shout-out to their new game project. Since many of my followers watch or support my patreon for the Furry Game Stuff, I figured you'd be interested in their project, "Star Harem". (Be wary, here thar be NSFW). While I haven't played it yet, the furry game community should support each other so go take a lookie!

Monochrome March Discount Commissions
Posted 6 years agoHey all,
So as I said a bit back I'm going to be committing myself to doing monochromatic work during the month of March to better learn about values and shading. While I'm still open to doing regular commissions this month, I wanted to offer something special and so I'll be offering something else.
If you would like a commission done in the monochrome style of pictures like this:
https://www.deviantart.com/lexhanle.....ouse-781599758
(No, it can be normal art from me, not just wierd perspective drawings but this is my favorite, so its my example)
I will be doing them for a discounted rate of $15 for one character and +5 for each additonal character. If you are interested please clarify this type of work is what you want when asking and what color you want me to shade off of.
Thanks all!

Patreon/January in Review
Posted 6 years agoDA Journal with Art of the Month Links: https://www.deviantart.com/lexhanle.....view-783920830
Well, this certainly was a crazy month for art huh? Starting off the year I announced I'd be doing as many art trades as I could this month which occupied the majority of the first half. Then I went crazy and started drawing buildings, which in turn led to a crazy amount of experiments with shading. I don't think I've ever thrown out as many drawings as I did this month and that's a good thing. Ultimately I think I left this month stronger than I started and I wanted to make an extra repeat of thanking my Patrons for their support as it allows me to work on more experimental stuff in confidence rather than worry about rushing to get new commissions every time I'm free.
I include this here because I feel like it was the closest we got to a culmination of the month's experiments even if it technically got done in February. All in all a crazy good month for all the doubt and complaining I did during it. I can only come out better.
But anyhow, shout outs time!

Patreon Update: December 2018
Posted 6 years agoWell, a year gone by. December proved to be a unique month, largely dominated by the unexpected workload of the holiday Visual Novel so if you liked that freebie please be sure to thank my Patrons because they really were why I had the time to do it at a point in the year when commissions are all the more important. Look for more VNs now and then going forward! January started off slow with me getting pretty nasty upper respiratory infection that cost me the whole first week of the month but I think I'm coming out of it! It's also Tradefest 2019 so anyone who'd like to do an art trade please let me know during January. If you'd like to but can't do it during the month, please tell me, I'm happy to set aside a future time to trade with you.
Anyhow first things first, I'd like to shout out to all my backers:

As for this month upcoming, I've made an announcement elsewhere but I'm going to be trying to do more SFW artwork. It's mostly because I feel like I should branch out. Don't worry if you really like my more kinky stuff, there will still be plenty.

Patreon Reward Changes: Avoiding Trouble
Posted 6 years agoHello Everyone,
Okay so as it is known now, Patreon has a policy against raffle-type prizes. While I feel I'm safe because I keep the raffles to DA/FA, I goofed and mentioned it in a Patreon post so I got a friendly email. In the interests of obeying the spirit as well as the letter of the rules I've decided to edit the rewards for the month:
- The free commission for the top contributor is still on because that isn't a raffle, it's just a top prize.
- Patreon members get a 20% discount on full commissions
- Patreon members will get a special discounted price on all future YCHs.
- Patreon members will get first priority in cases of limited space projects.
- I will do sketch requests for Patrons when I am able to so if you have an idea for a sketch and you're in my discord server Patreon channel it's a good place to suggest it.
I hope people find the trade off acceptable ^^

August Patreon Raffle Winners
Posted 6 years agoHello everyone!
It's time for my very first chance to announce Patreon raffle winners! The prizes are 3 sketch commissions (which can be used for a full-color YCH instead if desired) and one single character full-color drawing. There is also a full color drawing for the top commissioner of the month but Patreon apparently takes a couple days so I won't know that yet but it's independent of the raffles anyway. Anyhow here we go!
As for the monthly character contest this month's winner is.... Rhea with 4 backers vs. Iona with 1 backer. Sorry Iona, looks like I have to figure out what color a demon's tush turns when you swat it.
Of course I would like to thank all of the donors first:
Yall are great!

Patreon and Discord: Let's Do This
Posted 6 years agoOkay so I've been mulling this over for a while now and and I've decided the best thing I can do to hopefully get myself more work time is to open up a Patreon account and a discord server. I've been kicking around the discord server for a while but I decided it may finally be time. While I was initially against it, the whole set up helps with sorting commissions out and generally lets me give stuff out how I like to but with less of a seemingly random nature. Below is the link for the patreon which also includes the universal invite for the discord server. I hope people will join and consider funding. I have sponsorship options as low as 1 USD a month so if you like my work I appreciate it. Higher tiers include monthly raffles and the like. You don't need to join the Patreon to use the discord server of course! Of course any noise people want to make would be great, I'm hardly a good self-promoter I've been assured.
Also included in the Patreon is mentions of an upcoming game and chances to help fund it. I would like to do something new and bigger than the game I did for Tori's art contest a couple months back, featuring my own characters this time. If you'd like to help out I deeply appreciate it!

Advice on Streamlining
Posted 6 years agoI've been wondering, do you think my style is to clumsy? I feel like it's detailed in some areas and simplified in others in a way that makes it lack cohesion. At the same time I'm a bit paranoid because I always fear that if I alter my approach I'll forget how I did it before and won't be able to go back. Still I feel like I need to start developing a more thoughtful approach to how I draw. Thoughts?
