Miniature Painting
Posted 7 years agoAnyone of my watches know someone who paints minifigs?
I'd be interested in having one done up. One of my local Pathfinder pals was going to do some for the party, but Things Happened and he ended up moving to Pittsburgh.
I already know where and how much the figure itself costs, I just need someone willing to give it a workover.

If you are, or know anyone who's suddenly become a racist (genderist?), smack them upside the head. They have no excuse for their behavior.
"Making America Great Again" is not "Make America Racist Again."

Fursuiting the Philly Geek Awards
Posted 11 years agoAs some of my friends are aware, I had this brilliant idea to dress up as Reginald for the Philly Geek Awards because Velociraptor! Cannibalism! was nominated for Indie Game of the Year (did not win). With slightly less than 3 weeks before the ceremony I went looking (albeit not very hard) for anyone who would be able to do up a head and hands in time and not for exorbitant cost. My mom said, "I know a guy" (or rather, a gal) who offered to do the partial suit for $150 plus any extra materials she had to buy. "Deal!" I said. The rented tux was another $200.
The result was fantastic. Also, I look damn fine in a vest.
Overall durability and quality isn't great ("speed, price, quality, pick any two") but I figure I can get a few more uses out of Reginald before he completely falls apart, though I'll have to have his monocle rebuilt already.
Have some pictures!
Photobot 3000: Pic 1 Pic 2
JR Blackwell's photos (JR would be the dashing gal to my left in Photobot's second picture, and partner in crime)
Philly.com (regional newspaper's online presence).
Clever Girl Photography Pic 1 Pic 2
A total of about 14 other people had their pictures taken with me (two were too shy to ask, but they looked like they wanted a photo, so I spoke up), along with all of the other cameras, still and video, plus one fellow with Google Glass, though I haven't seen any of those pictures show up online yet. Video will likely take a while to edit before showing up.
Only two people noticed/asked about the mouthpiece I had, which was connected to a camelback full of vitamin water. One asked if I had it filled with alcohol. Given how much I drank that night to stay cool and hydrated, I'd have been totally wasted by the end of five hours (and with an open bar with free/discounted drinks, why would I got to the trouble of bringing 3 liters of my own?).
Had a blast, even if we didn't win and I was sweating like a pig in the air-conditioned museum.

AC2013
Posted 11 years agoSo my weekend was fun. Part of that was being the judge for a contest that is called Iron Author. Essentially the point is to take 24 hours, take everything you know about being a good (or at least passable) author and throw it out the window. Be bad, be terrible, be downright disgusting. In concept, it was to write worse fiction than The Eye of Argon (google it, its actually a hilarious read, for various reasons).
Results have varied over the years (predictably) from an entry that was banned outright due to having been written in brown gel pen on single ply toilet paper (and for which I suspect that Con Ops now handles all entries with rubber gloves) to a chose your own adventure, complete with a Klotski puzzle and infinite sex loop (the "good ending").
Last year was notable for containing the most squick ever seen in one place--in fully typed and email-submitted entries. I will not go into detail.
This year was rather uneventful, aside from having a record number of entries (18 in total), likely due to Kylle Gold being a guest judge (usually the prior year's winner is forced to judge, I started the tradition). I only had two that I scored outside the recommended -5 to 5 scoring (with 5 being publishable, you're doing it wrong). New math is not uncommon for scores. The two entries I scored outside these bounds (not counting a pair of -6s) were scores of 4-i and "the square root of (-4 otter)"
And then three entries hit my email.
All three of them were the winners, first second and third.
The winner this year was an entry entitled, "Xenochu, I chose you!: Judgement Day." It was a pokemon/aliens/carebears cross-over.
It is the only entry that even comes close to the goal of Iron Author. To channel your inner 13 year old, and write the best possible fiction you can. And still be terrible.
And of course, we make all the winners read their entries.

Most entertaining part of the Iron Author contest: watching sparf slowly have an aneurym as the winning entry is read.

Trials of Ascention: Everyone Loves Permadeath is Back
Posted 12 years agoNot sure what I mean?
It was a poorly conceived MMO that touted being able to play as one of two dozen races--including dragons, gryphons, and gargolys--along with perma-death.
Well.
It's back.
http://trialsofascension.com
I can find no information on the race selection--there is a single reference to dragons in the lore-- Edit: only humans at launch, due to scope (hey, the guy learned how to pare down to what he can actually accomplish!)
I am unsure of what to think about this burgeoning new game.
I'm still not-cool with the fact that PvP is non-consensual with no level restrictions, because from statements from potential players on the old forums, there were people who were going to do nothing but go around and be a colossal dick and kill all [insert race here] because [personal reasons] (e.g. one guy was going to play human and kill all the elves, because there are too many elves played in MMOs).
So....
Yeah.

Hurricane Aftermath
Posted 12 years agoFared well. We lost internet (but not power) and a tree came down on (what was left of) the garage.
All in all fairly minor here.
Going to be off the grid until Friday.

Rain, Wind, Flooding...
Posted 12 years ago....It's like there's a hurricane or something out there.
Might vanish for a few days depending on what happens in my local area with regards to fallen trees, etc. We're usually OK, but out power is supplied by over-head wires. We have a generator, but that is a short-term solution when the power goes out.

Velociraptor! Cannibalism! demo at AC!
Posted 12 years agoI don't know what day or time, as there was a break in communication between myself and the staff, and so the info got in at the last minute, I didn't request a specific time, and KP hasn't updated the web schedule yet, but it should be in the printed schedule booklet.
I'll have a demo copy or two with me to demo with, art is still being produced, and negotiations are still under way with a publishing deal, or I'd have a finished copy!
Anyway, see you there!
