Excellent location next to the river and the old street. The Morning market is in 5 mins walking distance. The house keeps its traditional outlook but with modern facilities inside. Perfect to stay for a few days. Jackson gave us a warm welcome and explained in details about the house. Plan to revisit next year.

A recently renovated property, Komorebi/こもれび is set in Takayama near Takayama Station, Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine and Fuji Folk Museum. It looks like a very traditional Japanese house, in a good way. Also I really like the location, it's on the edge of the forest. The kitchen was fully equipped. In general, it is a very relaxing place. I wish I could stay there longer...

Located in Kani and only 30 km from Nagoya Castle, 大正の宿 浪漫邸 provides accommodation with mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking. The rooms are very spacious and there is a fully equipped kitchen for cooking. There is also a garden and small pond which makes the place looks very relaxing. Very traditional house.

Lovely Japanese house in a beautiful village. Situated next to a small creek and eating options. There is a gorgeous little garden with a bath tub which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Located in Sakashita, 46 km from Gero Station and 8.1 km from Toson Memorial Museum, ゲストハウス にじゅうよん offers a garden and air conditioning. What a delight! Such a comfortable and cosy home, quiet, relaxing. Next door is cafe 42, with all types of music, meals and drinks. Easy walk to the station, and from there you can access points of Nakasendo.

Situated in Takayama in the Gifu region, with Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine and Fuji Folk Museum nearby, SORAMACHI - Vacation STAY 14338 provides accommodation with free private parking. Soramachi was a very comfortable house with good facilities. Probably the most spacious and nicest accomodation we experienced in our travels through Japan. Only stayed 2 nights but it provided a relaxing and quiet break from the crowds elsewhere. The house is right on the river and close to a tranquil temple walk and public bathhouse . It is an easy walk from there to the old quarter and we walked to the house with luggage from the station ( 1.4 km). The owners are obviously very house proud and welcoming. Highly recommend this accomodation.

Offering quiet street views, villa-rizo 山田 is an accommodation situated in Takayama, 3.9 km from Fuji Folk Museum and 4.2 km from Yoshijima Heritage House. Very comfortable and modern house, clean and new, was perfect for us (6 peoples)

Located in the centre of Takayama, TANIYA features an open-air bath, a garden, free WiFi, and free private parking for guests who drive. The building itself, as you can see from the pictures, is exquisite. If you are a fan of architecture or traditional craftsmanship, you will delight at just BEING in Taniya. This was almost a problem—I'm used to thinking of a hotel as a "crash pad" while exploring, and instead I wanted to spend hours and hours inside! Each morning was calm and peaceful: make a cup of green tea, then observe the way the light plays through the washi, the sound of water rushing by. I also particularly loved the bath; one of my favorite memories was enjoying it on a rainy, chilly night. We got home from dinner, I used the auto-fill function while I got ready for bed, then opened the window onto the courtyard and stepped in. Watching the moon through the rain, maple leaves, and steam curling up from the bath... it's like having your own personal onsen. Plus, each item in the villa was thoughtfully chosen, from the local sakes on offer in the fridge to the items provided in the bathroom to the super-soft pajamas. Even better were our hosts, who exemplified the Japanese concept of "omotenashi" (essentially, "hospitality" taken to its highest level). Well before arrival we were working with the Taniya concierge to make our plans happen (many thanks to Mahiro!). She handled making reservations at our desired restaurants and travel around town was provided as needed. Where she truly excelled was helping us troubleshoot our more ambitious ideas, such as: is there an open-air onsen near the Shinhotaka Ropeway with private baths? And how do we get there and back? The Kusakabe family were also gracious and friendly hosts, helping us along with the concierge and sharing their knowledge of Japan and Takayama plus their personal history—talking with them and touring the Folk Crafts Museum was a particular highlight, as many of the items on display are Kusakabe family heirlooms.
