Great starting point for exploring Reykjanes. Less than an hour away from Reykjavik. Loads of restaurants with different styles and themes. Thai, American-diner, Chinese, Icelandic, plus shockingly good gas station meals. The gas stations actually serve proper, good stuff. You can find KFC and Tacobell there as well. There's a movie theater that plays the latest movies, there are museums (including a fantastic Viking museum with a full and proper longboat) and there's a few quiet cafes to relax in.
Always just used Keflavik as an overnight stop before the flight home. It's not really a tourist stop! It does have some nice restaurants though. OK for a base for touring the Reykjanes peninsular though.
I grew up in a city next to an airport (Brampton ON representing!), so I always feel quite at home in Keflavik. It's the gateway to Iceland and an interesting little city in its own right. If you have the time, build in an afternoon to explore the Reykjanes peninsula. Lots of interesting sites, including the famous Blue Lagoon.
Ce qui est intéressant c'est la proximité de l'aéroport et du parc naturel Reykjanes (lac Kleifarvatn et les sources chaudes à Seltun, qui valent le détour, et pour ceux qui aiment le Blue Lagoon vu mais pas testé).
A sleepy non descriptive little place on the windswept reykjanes peninsular handy for the airport but with little else to detain you
A good base to explore the Reykjanes peninsula and the various sites included in the Reykjanes Geopark. Close enough to Reykjavik to have a night out at the theatre etc. No problems with parking and traffic.
Clean and comfortable, newly renovated hotel, makes a good base for visiting the Blue Lagoon (10 minute drive) and exploring the Reykjanes peninsula.
I already knew the area. Grindavík is a clean modern small town and fairly quiet. It has though been settled since 974AD so has quite a history. In the town itself the public outdoor geothermal pool with hot tubs and sauna is fantastic, cleaner than a hospital and great value for money. There is also a pleasant walk behind the leisure centre and across a lava field, and the harbour is nice to explore and has the legendary and excellent Kaffihaus Brygjann. Grindavík’s main asset for holidaymakers is the location. It is five minutes from the Blue Lagoon and the Reykjanes peninsula is a UNESCO Geopark geothermal area so there are many spectacular volcanic features to explore and you can find the only place on earth where the rift between two tectonic plates can be seen above sea level. There are stunning volcanic hills which are truly beautiful in winter light, and many hikes including one round the headland near Grindavík harbour where you can can see many of the 28 shipwrecks recorded over the years. When you see these you understand why the Icelanders consider fishermen to be their heroes. There is also a geothermal energy museum at one of the power plants and there are lava cave & ATV tours as well as horse riding on the unique Icelandic pure bred horses, cycling, coach trips along the south coast as well to Reykjavik and further afield. I was not terribly impressed by the eateries or maybe they weren’t trying very hard as it was February! Not good enough. Cafe Höllu was outstanding though so I ate there every day, and Kaffihaus Bryggjan is unique, full of history, has shelves full of books including the Sagas, is used by the fishermen and locals and has the best lobster soup in Iceland as well as very good cake and bottomless cofffee amd tea.(ie. free refills).I was honoured to be offered the legendary Icelandic Fermented Shark, as they remembered me from a previous visit. It was not bad, I was expecting worse!
It was the last day of our Iceland stay of 1 week, and we explored the Reykjanes peninsula which has a few very interesting sites like bubbling mud and boiling hot springs, the bridge between two continents and the beautiful Kleifarvatn Lake with geothermal area close to Krysuvik and nice walks around there. We didn't venture into Keflavik town itself. We had dinner in the restaurant right beside b&b keflavik airport hotel and the pricing was very reasonable, Pizza steak fish'n chips. A low key, easy going place.
Grindavik is a large fishing village that can be interesting for those who want to observe those types of activities. It offers some nice walks by the sea, although the town in itself is not that pretty. It is 10 minutes away from the Blue Lagoon and close to the Reykjanes lighthouse and coastline.
Everything was perfect. Worth the price as it is literally right next to the terminal. All you have to do is walk over. Breakfast starts very early in the morning for those who want it. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. From the 7th floor we even had a pretty nice view over the end of the Reykjanes peninsula and the sea which was a nice little bonus for our last night in Iceland. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if I had an early morning flight.
Sandgerði
The cottage ist lovely for anyone who likes to explore the Reykjanes peninsula. It is located aprox 10 kms from the int. airport. You will find a very clean, lovely apartment with a very well equipped kitchen and superb hot tube on the veranda. The lovely host is living just next door and helps with all questions. You can park your car right in front of the apartment. I stayed 3 nights and will come again for sure.
Gardur
The Bay View apartment is a very special place, a big apartment with great style at the sea side. Unforgettable is the sight from the hot tub to the bay, but also the living room and kitchen are simply extraordinary. Gardur is a great base to visit the Reykjanes peninsula and as location nearby the airport. We loved it- and would like to come back!
The hotel was perfect for the type of Icelandic experience we wanted. It was comfortable, warm and welcoming. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The breakfast was excellent and plentiful. We stayed there the whole week of our visit to Iceland and explored the whole of the Reykjanes Peninsular.
We stayed at Hotel Vogar because of its close proximity to the current volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula. It was very budget friendly and tidy. We enjoyed our pleasant interactions with the hotel staff. Our bathroom mates in the shared bathroom were very tidy and quiet.
super friendly crew and they provide airport shuttle service from 4am! very suitable for those who have early morning flights!
Everything Yuki and Andi are just great.. in every detail you can feel the love they put in And the breakfast was just exceptional Thank you for make us feel special
Very nice, clean small cottage
This was the best stay in my week long travel throughout Iceland. The cabin is decorated very nicely, it has a kitchen which comes equipped with all kinds of utensils and spices you might need. There is a nice looking BBQ available on the deck. The beds were very comfortable and the hot-tub is excellent. The cleanliness of the lodge is immaculate.
The hostel was really nice, so clear and comfortable
Perfect location in a quiet residendtial area. Few meters from the seaside. Stylish interior design and kitchen with all types of utensils. Easy to park at the entrance.
