Akayu Onsen, Nanyo

There is an in-house restaurant, plus free private parking and free WiFi are available. Guests also enjoy access to the hot spring bath and beauty services, as well as the public bath and open-air bath. First and foremost: This is not a hotel for extended stay. This is an unforgettable experience for a day. You are expected to mostly stay at this traditional hotel and relax as much as possible. The rooms are spacious, and the beds are comfortable. Each room has its own outside onsen (hot spring bath). Tip: take a room on the first floor, those bathtubs are carved out of a solid block of stone. The water itself is very hot, but feels absolutely divine and did wonders for my skin. The meals are crazy good. The dinner menu was ~10 courses with locally sourced ingredients. The waiter, general manager and owner took turns explaining in intricate detail what each course meant, where it came from, and why they chose to present it to us. I'm pretty sure the owner also mentioned the cook had a Michelin star - which would explain the unconventional, but delicious creations. The breakfast was Japanese-style, and also very good. I'm not sure what else I should add - the intricate eye for detail and attention the staff gave us (I felt so bad seeing the small Japanese woman carry my heavy luggage to my room, but I wasn't allowed to carry it myself, haha); the free bar with the expensive alcohol at night; the modern interpretation of old history... Not to mention the other included amenities: a shuttle bus, an early tour, live soba making, sake tasting [...] It is pricey, but again: you are NOT paying for a simple hotel night, you are paying for an experience. Full recommendation.
Yutagawa Onsen, Tsuruoka
Set in Tsuruoka, 12 km from Kamo Aquarium, Tsukasaya Ryokan features accommodation with a hot spring bath. This 4-star ryokan offers full-day security and luggage storage space. The ryokan offers rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. Of all the hotels and ryokans I stayed at during my two weeks traveling Japan, the night at Tsukasaya Ryokan was by far my favorite. Mrs. Shoji personally came out and greeted me at my taxi. From that moment onward, I felt as if I was receiving an experience personalized just for me. After showing me to my room, Mrs. Shoji informed me of several local attractions (parks, shrines, temples, etc.) that were lovely to visit prior to returning for dinner. Every moment of the stay felt thoughtfully crafted and authentic. The food was delicious, containing many dishes that I had never before experienced. The onsen, while small and enclosed, was at just the right temperature and left my skin feeling the best it has in years. The design of the structure was charming and authentic (as best that a foreigner like myself can judge). The staff were friendly and accommodating.

Super nice staff, they parked the car and explained everything. Room had a private onsen bath tube and was spacious. Public onsen was empty when i went there and had also a nice outside onsen. Dinner was great in a private room and brekkie was also amazing, served in a private room
The place was amazing. Beautiful and large room, very comfortable. We absolutely loved the food, especially the Yamagata wagyu! It was delicious and the meals were so beautiful and plentiful. We bought many items from the hotel gift shop - they carry very nice souvenirs. Rooftop outdoor private onsen for free - an amazing addition to an already wonderful stay.
Breakfast was Japanese healthy food. Dinner was delicious and good portion. Hotel was big enough that we did not see lots of other guest. The room with private onsen was great. The public onsen was clean and big. Staff was very helpful and friendly.
This hotel was absolutely lovely. It was clean and spacious. It was more traditional than some of the previous places and that is exactly what we were looking for. After 2 weeks in Japan, we used this location for a rest day. The Hot Spring baths and Onsen were beautiful and gorgeous. Perfect for what we were looking for. The staff also seemed to go above and beyond for us in every way.
Close to the property. Love the private onsen, the host even provides the local milk to the customer to enjoy after soaking in the hot spring. Also the shuttle bus service is pretty handy.
We stayed at the room with toilet and bath. The room is new and clean. The shared bathrooms on the first floor are small but also very clean. The onsen water is not too cold or too warm. The breakfast is also very enjoyable. The ryokan owners are kind. This is a nice experience.
Our first Ryokan experience and it didn't disappoint. We love our room and the private onsen inside! And the view from our room was breathtaking. We also enjoyed our breakfast and dinner. The staff doesn't speak much English but they tried very hard to help and accommodate our needs, we really appreciate that.
Meals - Go for the breakfast and dinner (full board) as the meals are excellent and portion is just out of this world. Public Onsen (Hot Spring Bath) - They have both indoor and outdoor section so it was great. Staffing - Everyone was uber friendly and helpful.
