Traditionally onsens were located outdoors, but a number of hotels now offer indoor facilities for private or shared use. The healing properties of each onsen will vary depending on its location, with "kuroyu" black water famous for its positive effects on skin.

The shuttle bus to and from the station was really easy. Multiple onsen to choose from. The reception staff were very friendly. Enjoyed the dinner and the breakfast buffet.
Breakfast was superb. Very delicious. I do not remember the last time I ate rice (gohan) so delicious.
The view from windows in the morning was beautiful - a thick layer of snow on rooftops and on the side of the mountain rising up sharply. Hot springs were great too.
Very friendly and accomodating staff, we felt really looked after - especially given we only spoke a little bit of Japanese! The outdoor onsen was spectacular. The food was also really delicious, and very well prepared. I'd gladly plan a trip out here again.
