Situated 3 km from Jigokudani Monkey Park, Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya offers accommodation in Yamanouchi with access to a hot spring bath. My pleasure for the warm hospitality and hard work done by the whole family to feel ourselves comfortable in a traditional onsen accomodation. Akira san and Yumi san responded quickly to our inquiry. Akira san picked us up and drove to the accomodation after visiting the Snow Monkey Park in a pre-arranged time and place saving us precious time after a long day. We had time to take a night walk after our onsen experience. We were without much luggage, shipped them to the hotel of our next stay. Kyoko san was very attentive, open and friendy. She took about us good pictures without having to ask her. This was the only place in our visit to Japan where I slept through the night without any coughing, due to the fresh clean air inside and outside. Unfortunately, I tend to be sensitive to hotel air conditioning systems. My husband and me felt sorry for having to leave early in the morning for our next destination. Do not be discouraged to visit the Snow Monkey Park if you read that snow monkeys do not appear on certain days in the Monkey Park in the autumn season. The environment is spectacular and we did see some monkeys. If you happen to be in Yamanouchi in the middle of the apple season, worth trying local delicious apple sweets.

Located in the Shibu hot-spring district, guests can enjoy indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths at Suminoyu. Massages can be requested and a footbath is also available for extra relaxation. It looked great, very japanese style. They provided yukatas to use in the hotel and at town. We had access to the onsen in the hotel, which was beautiful and really confortable, and also acces to the onsens around the town. The staff was great, very friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing.

Located in the Shibu hot-spring area, Onyado Hishiya Torazo features Japanese-style accommodations. The atmosphere of the place was amazing. Traditional looking building with the best private onsens, the outside one being magical, especially in the snow. Complimentary yakuta to wear made it even better. The host was eager to please and very friendly, giving out hand made origami.

Located in the centre of Shibu hot-spring area and a 5-minute drive from Yudanaka Train Station, Sakaeya offers Japanese-style accommodations. This was a real highlight of our trip and we wish we could have stayed longer! First the area and Ryokan are gorgeous, completely picturesque! Staff are attentive and friendly and make a real effort in English! The food and the rooms were top notch! My wife and I had the best time. Thank you to all the staff who work hard to make Sakaeya what it is! We slept like a baby thanks to the food and onsen and truly hope to be able to come back. Also many thanks for the surprise gift to celebrate our honeymoon

Japanese-style hotel Kokuya offers comfortable rooms that boast a private outdoor hot spring bath and free internet access. The hotel features 2 restaurants, a spa and spacious hot-spring baths. This Ryokan was our favourite experience on our trip and one we will never forget. Every detail was unique and lovely, and every person working here is fantastic. We were picked up from Yudanaka station right as we arrived, which was so generous and good. Then once we arrived we were shown to our rooms and also served dinner by Hiro who was an exceptional host. The private onsen room we had called "Ayame" was quiet, comfortable and peaceful. Despite being surrounded by baths everywhere there was no humidity and it was fresh and cool. The rest of the private onsens throughout the ryokan were each so unique and interesting, with the larger open air baths being my favourite. You can reserve these if it's during busy times or if it's low traffic you can just go into any of them and lock the door behind you, meaning you can go as a mixed sex group or couple. If you have breakfast and dinner, these are extravagant and large multi dish meals full of variety, with everything being high quality leaving us feeling fueled and refreshed. I could go on forever about how great Kokuya is, but it's better to go there and see firsthand how amazing the building, the people and the onsen village of Shibu is! There are some things to be aware of that might be unusual for others booking who aren't used to Ryokans or Japan The tatami mat sleeping arrangements are hard, but I like this and anyone who prefers hard mattresses and sleeping on your back will enjoy them. Also note that the meals are large and varied, there is a western style breakfast available but to really enjoy this Ryokan you should be prepared to dive into Japanese Kaiseki dining with everything that it involves, from the raw fish and raw egg to the sea urchin and everything between. If you are too fussy and dislike most of the things it would be a big waste and loss for you. If you enjoy this, you will love it!

On just a 5-minute drive from Yudanaka Station, Wafu-no-Yado MASUYA features beautiful Japanese-style rooms, hot spring baths and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms boast a private outdoor hot spring bath. Plentiful traditional breakfast but not like a British breakfast so depends on what you like at breakfast a great experience
