Located on the bank of a beautiful river with public onsens scattered along it's banks. All rooms face the river, with balconies. The red suspension bridge is for the hotel, and a lovely way to begin your stay. Our room was a traditional tatami. We were the only non-Japanese here, and by 'here' I mean in the entire town! We missed dinner on our first night so had to get a train one stop to Hita as Amagase has no evening restaurants. But that was easy as the hotel is only 150 metres to the train station. You can sit out on the communal balcony and watch the occasional train rattle by on the opposite riverbank. Dinner and breakfast the next day we're fantastic! Traditional Japanese fine dining of several courses, some cooked at the table! The staff spoke English well enough to get by and were always happy and patient. I used their natural onsen facilities which were of a very high standard. If you are looking for a truly Japanese experience, I'd highly recommend Seitenkaku! Amagase is a quiet town with no night life. But just relaxing and listening to the river run by is reward enough.

Room condition, onsen(condition and number of), food, staff. I've been to ryokan a few times, this ryokan was better than I expected. Actually it kept on raining during my stay. Usually, I don't like rainy days but I've change my mind-a scenery of rainy day have a charm of its own, it does. Sitting in the open-air bath and watching the rain-soaked mountain and valley was rest and relaxation I imagined. I'll recommend to my friends that Sanso Tensui will be best choice for get away from hustle and bustle. It was a little difficult to get there, but it was worth it.

It was the first time we rented a car and decided on this property. We were pleasantly surprised at the recently renovated and up to date/modern facility. The staff was better than great and went out of their way to care for us. There were two private bath that were available to reserve as a family or couple too- it was very nice! Also, the breakfast and dinner was one of the best we had at a ryokan. We will remember our experience here for a long time. P.s. - the staff shared of a nearby waterfall that we walked to - it was beautiful and peaceful.
