It was a fantastic cozy stay after a long day of hiking. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming and gave good suggestions for places to eat and sights to see.

The location is just awesome - right near the Tongariro Crossing, a short drive into Turangi and also close to Lake Rotopounamu. The owners are just wonderful people. The kitchen is very basic so please make sure you bring your own cookware, sharp knife, plates, cups, cutlery. If you do that you'll be fine - two big fridges, plenty of room at the two big gas hob ovens for communal cooking, plenty of bench space. The kitchen has a great vibe with fellow travellers.
Plateau Lodge is located 15 minutes’ drive from UNESCO World Heritage listed Tongariro National Park, where guests can enjoy skiing, hiking, cycling and paddling activities.

The rooms were clean and comfortable and the bathrooms were some of the nicest shared bathrooms I've used. There were plenty of things to do in the living room if you're stuck at the lodge for a day. Location is good, only a short walk to both the bar and restaurant in town.

The owners were very friendly and helpful.
The rooms were large and tidy.
The management is chaotic. I lost my ski poles. It took me an hour to find them among three girls. I found that all their equipment was someone else's. I was shocked. There were too many novices. My friend's child was hit three times in one day. It was really dangerous.

We loved our visit. Fantastic views and quality time.
We loved our visit. Fantastic views and quality time. Easy to get around in a standard car. Weather conditions were clear and bright, mild cold temperatures so a very minimal amount of ice on the road. We recommend the sky waka gondola. The skotel alpine resort is a good place to stay.

The isite leaves a lot to be desired.
The isite leaves a lot to be desired. It could easily go from barely adequate to basic competence by putting boards outside stating the office is closed. As walkers are supposed to register their walks on the mountain you wonder how accurate their information is when the office is closed and there isn’t even a notice board outside for walkers to use to show they’ve left or returned.
The village in summer, now the Chateau is closed, has very little available accommodation.
There is a shop for basics and Skotel runs a great restaurant and bar.

Absolutely recommend the 2 hour walk to Taranaki Falls.
Absolutely recommend the 2 hour walk to Taranaki Falls. You can do it in sneakers, some parts are lovely bush right alongside the river. The landscape keeps changing. Its beautiful and the air is so fresh. There's a table at the falls so take your picnic and stop for a while.
Get your caffeine fix from TNT Pataka Food Truck at Whakapapa Holiday Park, they make a decent coffee and the food looked good too.
Unfortunately some places in the area closed due to staff shortages, so it might pay to check for what is open when you visit.

Hi,
It is better to plan your trip for at least two days. You can enrol your kids to ski school at the nearby school for a longer duration trip so that they learn the art of skiing. Bringing chains with the car will help you to revisit the Whakapapa skiing location often and reduce the commute cost. All in all, it was good to see snow all around especially if you are coming from the northern part of NZ.

Meant to say in my review last night that we had a lovely waitress for dinner, young girl,Lisa? And the main reason we didn't pay for the dinner was because it came 10past10pm, besides one was not eatable.

Skotel is in the most beautiful location - the wilderness is on the doorstep.... just step outside and start hiking. The staff are wonderful, the rooms are great (either backpacker budget or hotel style) and the restaurant is 10/10. Room prices and restaurant prices are excellent value - nothing like city prices here! This was my third visit to Skotel - I look forward to it every time. It is also a great place to meet new people - guests mingle easily and share their day in the wonderful environment of the National Park.
We were very lucky to be among the very last guests at this iconic hotel, which is closing on February 5th, apparently forever. The staff were struggling to keep the place going and in the main did their very best despite the small number of guests and staff. We wished we had seen it operating in its former grandeur, but were very glad we had done a booking before they stopped taking them, and that it was before the axe finally fell.
We come to the Chateau quite often and we always love it. It has a "Grand Budapest Hotel" feel, and even the slightly shabby nature of some of the areas just adds to the charm. The staff were great and did their best to accommodate the needs of our large group. We held a private function in the Ngauruhoe room and it was a fantastic space for our group. The surrounding area is magic.
- Excellent location with beautiful views from the room
- Value for money compared to other hotels in the area
- Very friendly and helpful staff
- Good restaurant with reasonable prices
