Lovely little seaside town, with fascinating pancake rocks and spectacular coastal scenery. Wonderful walks up into the country behind - particularly along the river valleys/gorges.
Rather isolated, with no grocery shops or fuel available. The roads in and out are very narrow, winding and prone to blockage due to landslip. Plan ahead for disruption.
There is a pub with good meals (at a price), and the cafe beside the visitor centre was a good breakfast spot.

We only stayed for two days in Punakaiki and that time frame was perfect for us. Our prime reason for staying in Punakaiki was to visit the Pancake Rocks and this natural feature was outstanding. Absolutely fascinating. We visited a couple of times - once at high tide and the other time at low tide. High tide was more impressive because the blowhole was really showing off but both times were jaw dropping.
Truman Track was a short beautiful walk. We strolled along Fox Beach which was wonderful and we also did a quick visit to Punakaiki Cavern but that was not really our thing so did not venture in too far.

A stunning day at Punakaiki, the board wak overlooking the sea gives great views of the rock formations, the sea crashing and the bush. There is a wonderful new information centre nearly completed with helpful staff to give local advice on walks etc. Such a great stop lots to see and do.

The Pancake Rocks walking track was fantastic and the Blow Holes were amazing. The Truman Track through native bush was awesome. Cafe reasonable and pub good but expensive food and drinks. Spectacular rock formations all around the area.Raincoats recommended - you never know when it will rain.

We loved our visit to Punakaika rocks and worth a detour.
We loved our visit to Punakaika rocks and worth a detour. We liked the house except we are too old for having to go up and down steep stairs during the night. We were not warned about this.
We ate at the local scenic hotel and this was reasonable and pleasant

The Pancake Rocks are overwhelming beautiful, almost an alien place on earth. We went there at the end of the day (low tide) and came back in the morning (high tide). The power of the waves was incredible.

it was a good location for our visit to Punakaiki. The cottage is quite tired & dated. It is set in beautiful native bush but not walking distance to the village. The only cooking is with a microwave & pop up toaster, the only sink is a tiny sink in the bathroom.
We were disappointed with the Hideaway cottage not having better food preparation & sink for the price.
The new owner of the hotel, Alexander was really welcoming and helpful. The location on the beach was stunning. Although we didn’t use the restaurant, it’s menu is comprehensive and the bay window looks right onto the ocean, just lovely. Room 214 is especially good with a balcony overlooking the ocean. The nearby Pancake Rocks are a great short visit.
Great position on that amazing coast. Just loved standing on the seawall watching the breakers smash up against the rocks. An easy walk to the hotel for a meal. A good location for. Breakaway weekend, lovely drive (although torrential rain) and superb walk up the river. Good friendly staff at the hotel for checkin.
