This was the most authentic aspect of our entire trip to Japan. If you're looking to get outside the big cities and see a part of Japan that most tourists probably don't see, this would be a great stop for you. If you plan it in advance, you can add a tea ceremony and picking the nearby vegetables. We didn't have time, but I would have loved to help with the rice cultivation.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! The ryokan owners are extremely nice, it feels like staying at home, the owner lady took was super nice and drove us to see takeda castle viewpoint at 5am! She went out of her way to make sure our stay was beautiful and memorable, we ordered kaiseki dinner was great!! Japanese style room in beautiful undiscovered area in Japan!
