FAQs about hotels in Assisi

Spiritual Sanctity in the Umbrian Hills

Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.

The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.

Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.

Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.

The cobbled streets ascending Assisi’s hills contain most of Booking.com’s accommodation options, including luxury hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near Santa Maria degli Angeli train station.

A gorgeous and charming medieval city in central Italy.

A gorgeous and charming medieval city in central Italy. The people are friendly and easy-going. Just so nice to walk around the small streets - a lot of stairs/up and down wherever you go. Famous for its religious/artistic heritage but also nice for food and wine. Touristy but not hectic at all - nearly all of the historic center is pedestrian. Good for 2-4 days.

You can walk everywhere a car is totally unnecessary. Nothing is far. There is endless history from Roman and before . A lot is free or very reasonable. It has everything from the fabulous basilica san Francesco to the small and moving sites. Wonderful food but also lovely cafes particularly Gardenia Lorenzo. ( on the way to Rocca Maggiore), it has wonderful views and a relaxing atmosphere. I would love to go back for longer.

Loved the situation of the town with its beautiful churches, narrow streets and alleyways and steps. Nice little shops with local traders and trade. Very hilly so walking for disabled people is difficult

    Beautiful, magical place.

Beautiful, magical place. Lots of tourists but many were coach parties who left quickly and didn't stay overnight. The lower basilica of San Francesco was a bit crowded with groups but the system of mics and earphones meant they were quiet and they soon moved on. The upper basilica and treasury were very quiet. Lots of decent restaurants in the village and shops to buy nice presents. There weren't any everyday shops. Lots of steps and slopes so you have to be reasonably mobile. It was easy to park the car in the underground carpark and walk up into the village. It's very compact apart from the hermitage which is a short drive away from the village but well worth visiting. We wouldn't bother with Santa Maria degli Angeli on the plain next time as it's being refurbished so not much to see atm

Assisi and the basilicas hill is an amazing place, worth visiting and enjoying for at least two nights. The view of the valley is breathtaking. The whole complex is very clean and well maintained. We had a decent breakfast at the hotel, for lunch and dinner there are plenty of diverse restaurants. Beside the obvious religious meaning, Assisi is a treasure for art lovers.

We stayed here 1 night and wished we could have stayed longer. The hotel is in a perfect location to explore Assisi. The room itself was small but the bathroom and shower were larger than I expected. Beds were not the most comfortable but the view from our room was incredible!! The host was very gracious and she even helped us carry our luggage up to the room. The restaurant at the Panoramic is excellent, a must try when visiting Assisi. Highly recommend the Posta Panoramic in Assisi.

The staff were welcoming and helpful and gave us a whole container of UHT milk when a little milk for our tea was requested. The location was very central but Assisi is not a large village :) Superb breakfast with a lot of choice. There was a very nice courtyard restaurant, (separate from the hotel) opposite the hotel entrance, who made a reasonably priced plate of tomato bruschetta when asked if they had it when it was not actually on the printed menu..
