The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic center were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbor and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbor to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and sidewalk cafés. Also here are the 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.
The Alghero accommodations on Booking.com include 5-star hotels with pools, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.

Alghero offers everything, beautiful old narrow streets, stunning architecture, lots of green areas. Great restaurants offering a very wide variety of food and good value. Family friendly, great beaches, lots of water sports, daily boat trips from the harbor. We received a warm welcome everywhere we went.

Alghero is an interesting town of several parts.
Alghero is an interesting town of several parts. The old town and harbour area are very touristy and crowded. There is a plethora of bars and restaurants but many of these are, perhaps, overly expensive. There are interesting museums to visit and excursions available. I would suggest that anyone visiting for more than a day buys the Alghero Experience ticket which is excellent value and available from the Tourist Information office. The more residential areas we also found interesting to walk around and we discovered several local bars. The best meal we ate was at the Piccola Cucina, on the edges of the main tourist areas - fantastic food and at a reasonable price. A visit to Alghero necessarily means a fair bit of walking if you really want to explore it.

The old town streets, restaurants and sea promenade are wonderful. We didn’t eat in a bad place! There are several beaches in the area to visit but we loved La Pelosa an hour away by car. People were v friendly even though it’s touristy.

The old town has a lovely atmosphere but cobbled streets may not be to everyone's taste. Loads of restaurants as long as you like pasta and pizza. We were here mid September and it was still necessary to book.
Limited bus service so you may want to hire a car or bike.
Cocktails on the harbour 7.50 Euros. What's not to like.

Although Alghero does not abound in a multitude of historical monuments, the old town is very pretty and charming. The city offers numerous restaurants serving traditional Sardinian cuisine and a promenade along the sea with beautiful views. In the surrounding area, there are excellent beaches and the stunning Neptune's Grotto.

This b&b is one of the few places, where you almost feel like home. The owners are very friendly, the room was comfortable and very clean and even had a balcony. The breakfast was lovely and also consisted of local specialities, which we very much enjoyed. The location is ideal as it is close to both, the old town and the beach with a nice promenade. We had no problems finding a parking space nearby. When we come back to Alghero, we for sure will return to this b&b. It was our most favorite stay on our roundtrip across Sardinia.
Very well prepared for the whole family house, with all (or even more), than You need, 100 m from the beautiful and quiet area, nearby numerous, small local restaurants and pubs, natural forest to take a rest. 1h walk thourgh the beautiful beach to the old town (really worthy). Very friendly and helpful hostess and the guide she created for guests about Alghero and Sardinia is exemplary for travel portals. I highly recommend it and I will definitely come back with my family. Grazie. per divertirci e a presto, ciao :)
We had a fantastic stay at Villa Marianna. Monica and Graziella were incredibly welcoming. The property was beautiful, with a very clean and comfortable room and well-maintained grounds. The pool area was perfect for relaxing, and the secure parking added peace of mind. It was the perfect base for exploring northwest Sardinia, just a 5-minute drive to a large free carpark near plenty of restaurants in Alghero. We highly recommend this property for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.
This place is in a rather quiet residential area, but still within walking distance from the old town. There are also some supermarkets less than 200m away.
This is not a hotel, so power is not turned off when you leave the room. Not sure why people still put up with this nonsense anyway.
In order to remind you that Sardinia is rather mountainous, the rooms are on the 3rd floor.
It was a lovely clean property within walking distance of the best of Alghero. The breakfast was good. The air con was excellent. The bathroom facilities (shared) were perfect. The host was a most welcoming and passionate about the beauty of Sardinia
